saw that coming a mile away, so easy to scheme this team into giving up either wide open 3 or barely contested 3 like the one Franz hit us with in the Orl gm

Nate McMillan? Dude was a great defensive player- not sure how good he is at coaching.
I just think we don’t have the personnel to be a good defensive team.

Switch everything was supposed to be the new rage. That's why everybody wanted all these big wings.

AD only can switch onto perimeter players if there's another big protecting the paint , as a result opponent bigger players have easily abused Lakers guards on switches .. It's either a bucket at the rim , FTs or a wide open 3 .

I don't get this scheme and the no communictation factor at all

the no communication factor is definitely on the players, but it's also up to the coach to recognize when his players can't execute the scheme. one solution will be to get other players, and i do believe we'll look to swap out just about everyone over the next couple months for guys that can do what jj wants.

before anyone says "why didn't it already happen?" i'd say that jj wasn't anticipating that guys simply wouldn't do simple things. that's hard to see from the outside, and i'm sure ham and slick are chuckling at their barbecue about this right now.

anyway, i think the comments about ten gabes and professionalism are definitely jj's way of expressing incredulity regarding certain guys (i'm not sure who--i'd have to watch more closely than i do to know).

the fear, though, is that we'll move knuckleheads for professionals, but that plays out as moves of guys like dlo for guys like gabe (who, ironically and with the help of one of our stars, botched a late game switch ftl). you've got to find a way to get your talent to do the little things--and do them all the time.

i'll end the rant by saying that because lebron and AD don't do that, a coach's job is really hard here. budenholzer has a much easier time because durant is better about details than lebron and AD, imo. their big star can hold people accountable without looking hypocritical.

i'm pretty worried about the mental impact of the hawks game after we saw the fold job post-orlando game, too. i think lebron and AD are thinking, "man, we went all out and lost to the hawks, partially because we ourselves couldn't close. maybe we should give up." and again, everyone sees that.

Yeah, this is so true. It's very easy to take AD out of the paint and then it's an easy basket. The amount of times Atlanta had DLo defending a big guy in the paint. DLo is such a zero in that regard. He literally doesn't even try. There was a play where the offensive player, I guess Hunter, went with a bottom-up floater that was so easy to block, but DLo was the guy in front and just watched
Great read, so much of my thoughts in each layer you touch upon.

I think DLo and Rui are the main ones who don't have any sort of BB IQ defensively. They just don't make any reads nor fundamental things. Reaves is subpar on that too. Gabe is elite, Max has potential there but still makes too many "rookie mistakes". Reddish is good. Knecht has been improving.

But yeah, it starts with the stars. Nothing to criticize on AD about that, but Bron off ball is just awful. It's not that he doesn't know, he's just not engaged. But we know he switches it up in the playoffs.

This is where JJ's lack of experience is detrimental. It's good to have an idea on how to win and play basketball. I think he has it and is able to build a winning system long-term.
But many times you don't have the personnel to execute your good idea. So you have to adjust and forget some of the principles you like the most for the best short term success.
I think JJ is more of a culture builder and we aren't in that window yet. Let's see how we deal with that, I agree that we may have a high turnover trying to build that

i think reaves and dlo have the hoop iq, but neither is athletic, and dlo's interest in battling waxes and wanes. reaves plays hard and knows where to go; he's just not fast.

reddish is good one on one but gets lost in team d sometimes.

rui seems lost a lot. he just can't defend away from the basket (he's not bad at weakside recovery blocks, etc.). knecht is a rookie, but i fear there may be some rui there, too. you can learn, but it takes time, and some guys take a long time. both rui and knecht are also both pretty slow, so that doesn't help.

hayes is quick but not sharp or strong. gabe is sharp and strong but not quick.

AD doesn't get back on defense if he's under the basket on offense. opposing coaches have figured this out, and they run us to death any time we try to get AD going in the paint. especially if he's missing/getting fouled without a whistle.

drove me nuts in the denver series that one consistent issue was jokic beating our back line down the floor. this is a big chubby dude just outhustling our guys, AD included.

time will tell what jj's real strengths and weaknesses are. it's not a great look to have the team really quit in some games this early, but he's also done some stuff i like. he's definitely handled dlo better than ham did, and in general i feel like he's been more fair with all the players on the roster than ham was. he also had us moving toward an AD/ball movement centered offense as opposed to watching lebron dribble, though that has dropped off as the season has progressed.

The bags under his eyes are getting bigger after each game too  I bet he actually believed moves were coming to get 2-way players when he took the job too, I can totally see Bob Todd selling him a bill of goods.

he's still a better coach than ham, but lately some really puzzling decisions

taking out koloko who was a +12 in favor of hachimura was really stupid
