    About that 3 point shooting...

    11-40

    Why can't we shoot a high %?

This is our weakness every year

I think we will get better. JJ clearly wants us to shoot more so players are chucking them a bit. With time they should start to find the groove and take better ones.
But I don't think we will ever be a top10 team in that stat with this personnel

he basically made zero progress to my eye from last summer to this one, which is disappointing.

we were in the top 10 in 3pfg% last year, but near the bottom in attempts. it's possible we were just only taking very good shots.

this is then the open question. we'll see. i'm not one who thinks more threes is always the way, but the current coach does.

relatedly, didn't see the game but was a bit concerned that AD is still working mostly out near the 3 pt line. i really feel like taking him out of the high post is working against his (and the team's) strengths. but each of the last two coaches has been doing it, so who knows...

    Sure doesn't seem like it

So many of our players we were relying on to be scorers were having games like 1-7 or 2-10

I understand that they have to shoot

But it always seems like if their % was 38% let's say, when they play for us it goes down

We talked about it a lot during the season

We had 4 guys shooting 40% from 3 last season . The problem was, that they all forgot how to hit an open shot, (besides Lebron) in the playoffs. I don't think it was a scheme issue.

Yeah but in a low volume. Rui and Prince made less than 2 per game. Dlo and Bron had their best shooting year.
We will shoot more and % will go down. But I think we can still be average. When this offense starts flowing, I believe we will shoot at a good clip

An open shot is an open shot, you gotta knock them down. You can have more shots attempts, and you can miss more shots too. I'm not a fan of failing in love, with just constantly jacking up 3 pt shots.

yeah, i'd have to dig up the numbers, but i think our open percentage was really bad. i don't know how to answer that, but my suspicion is that it's an inverse lebron effect. i think luka and harden have had similar effects--bad shooters become good and solid ones look worse. the first one makes sense, but the second one seems weird. the explanation is probably either psychological--having to do with expectations and gain/loss focus, or something purely related to volume/role/involvement. malik beasley got easier shots here, but he didn't get quite as many or were they of the same variety. they were...too easy? that's great if you're pj tucker and suck at shooting an need all day. better shooters might suffer with a little too much time.

note that knecht drilled that little handoff step away three off double screen action the other night, then missed everything the next game.

    i'm spitballing.

When you’re pre-season record sucks, “It’s ok, we’re just implementing a new system, integrating new players, etc”

Still prefer to see wins, but know it’s of secondary importance right now. First half results were encouraging

When we are playing our bench for entire halves, I don’t worry about the losses.
That being said, Rob needs to significantly improve it in order for us to not be in the 7-10 range.
Or, Christie needs to win the MIP award, Gabe needs to turn back into Playoff Miami Gabe for an entire season, Hayes needs to suddenly become a decent defender, along with Dalton taking home the Rookie of the Year trophy.

Austin was like 2 for 12 from 3 points shooting, vs Phoenix game 0-7.Maybe it's an ankle bothering him

Olivari really showed something during that 17-0 run.
Wish we could just waive JHS and give him that spot.

I wouldn’t give up on JHS yet because of the size and he is making progress which is good to see. But yeah! Physically he’s like as fast as Schroder on D ….. with maybe more strength and naturally better offense than Vincent to go with that speed, And his handles seem good with that speed while playing under control. This game anyway. He was the spark plug to the late game run.

Great stuff by our 3rd stringers (without Bronny and JHS). Olivary was nice, and the whole squad was into it, made it really fun to watch
Good to have a win on the board. I don't give a crap about it, but media sensationalizes it if you go winless so it's good to avoid that narrative

With the core rotation was a good game too. We didn't win but was a tight game, always around that 5pt margin. Portis went berserk, which he can sometimes. We were able to sustain through the offense though

feel like the starters have looked solid, and the primary bench guys (gabe, christie, knecht, hayes) have looked like they belong playing 15-20mpg in real nba games. this is good. we can't really afford another injury beyond wood/vando, though, as then we're starting to have to play folks that maybe aren't nba rotation players.

Depth will be an issue for sure with this team until Rob can make some moves.
