i think (hope) it's really about the second apron stuff. and i'm not foolish enough to be too charitable here, either--lebron's hoping we can make a trade that reduces salary so he can get his full max. he's going to be annoyed at rob if he has to take a 1.1 million paycut to keep trade options open...but he basically HAS to do it because if not, we literally can't make any of these moves he wants. like they're all impossible. earlier you were like, just add lewis to dlo for capela--if you're over apron 2, that's a negatory. you're both combining salaries AND taking in more than you send out.

He added this 2nd part to what I posted above, and I think that adds a lot to it.

The front office are the ones that keeping selling this BS, maybe they should just stop saying “championships”. Fans will still expect it to be the goal, but we can’t throw it in their face and say “but you said championship!”. You can’t have JJ come out and start talking about ‘I came here to win championships’ on day one over just saying like he came here to build something good. Stop shouting championship, don’t dangle it out there at the last deadline that we’ll have 3 picks to work with this summer to make moves, just don’t say anything. Fans will still dislike you, but if you don’t set expectations like this, it won’t be this bad, it won’t be this level of disappointment.

I doubt Jeanie cares if “bad” or “good” superstars come here, they both sell tickets, but fair point. I’m saying we need a new owner who doesn’t literally make their living off our ticket sales, we need owners who do this for fun because they want to win.

i was going to respond to raj's first tweet with something like the second but figured that would just piss people off.

the idea that a healthy vando means nothing is wild to me. we were SO good with him on the floor the year before.

and while i'm a gabe doubter, he was the starting pg on a finals team the year before we signed him.

if we had just added two players of that caliber via FA this year, we'd be considered "winners". people are excited with the clippers and gs bringing in similar or lesser players (despite each losing a valuable piece in the process).

you'll never get disagreement from me here. our problem is our ownership isn't megazillionaires for whom this is just an entertaining diversion/temporary investment. i lol'd at the C Bags owner being like, "i'm out" right after winning.

part of you wants to feel good about the story (family business, etc.), but it has definitely harmed the on-court product at times.

honestly, i'm not sure which front office model i really like right now. maybe philly, as it seems the owner has blank checks and stays out of it otherwise? i was jealous of the clippers until they started picking up really problematic dudes left and right and then got into weird pissing matches with lue and george over contracts.

Maybe running it back it just because they want to see what JJ can do. Maybe they are going to finally announce this “legendary” coaching staff (I only say legendary because it is weird they’ve gone so quiet, so maybe a lackluster off-season is excused with a good coaching staff?), and see how they do till December and then trade away by then. I can’t imagine them waiting till the Trade Deadline if things are going well.

I’m sad because it feels like LeBron wants to BALL so that he can with the Championship with Bronny, but I don’t think this roster can do it. UNLESS the coaches are better than we think.

So, it sucks to run it back, but if it’s just for the first 3-4 months of the season AND the In-Season Tourney, then maybe it’s worth it.

Honestly, I feel like this whole situation should put Pelinka in the hot seat, and MAYBE we can have some more competency in the FO, but I doubt that too.

Say it, and it shall appear.

Okay, that seems like a good direction to go with on coaching staff. I like that for now.

please try and convince what’s his face from NO and then Rondo and MAYBE Cassell and we SHOULD be good

I don't see how you can defend Rob and the FO after the coaching saga and botching all our major targets again. Any other franchise and he would have been fired long ago.

I think on communication you have to distance yourself of media narrative. Media just wants headlines and "reporters" just feed stories that sell and are exciting.
But Rob has been saying that he priorizes the future and player development is the most frequent expression used. He also says he's willing to use the picks IF it's the right deal. The right deal haven't emerged.

We just moved on in day 3. So we had plans A in day 1. Plan B in day 2. And now day 3 they move to plan C. Pay Bron and close the coaching staff and move on with the same crew that won the IST on merit and got eliminated by the only team they can't win against, while having a bad HC.
I think I'm more high on this team that most people. This crew with a good coach is a top6 team. We finished last season on 17-9 - 65% win, good enough for 4th in the year.

People forget Ham pulled all kind of s*** during the year. We had like 40 different lineups. With a estabilized 5 from the start with either Rui or Vando, then one of them with Gabe, Knecht and Max is a solid team. We're not on the top3 of the West, but we can be in the top6 waiting for the trade that brings us the gold.

@abeer3 on the Dejounte trade. I don't think Reaves was the hold on. They got Daniels who's more of Max's level. I would give Max for Dejounte with the 2 picks. You would have Reaves and Knecht as your 2 and could go bigger on the 3.
Oh yes, ownership is bad. I think it's the family's main financial asset, no? Most owners have other cash cows in other businesses, so they can afford the basketball side. We still value too much the profits and titles cost money. We let Caruso go away and a couple years later we let Beasley and Bamba walk when they could bring us Holiday from Portland or Bruce Brown or wtv. They just don't pay to win

Still sounds like it all hinged on GSW taking DLo, which was never going to happen. I’m fairly convinced LA was his top choice, but it was nearly impossible to make that happen without him taking less money.

But Klay can’t tell Mavs fans they were a backup, so this info is leaked to appear as though he chose Dallas over more money, but in reality, the LA money wasn’t an option since the Warriors weren’t taking DLo.

i mean, they did just go to the finals and have the best player in basketball (imo).

also, one thing i've seen reported differently is gs's willingness to take dlo. i read somewhere they weren't interested. i feel like some of this is PR to help klay transition smoothly to dallas.

edit: once again wallangong beat me to it and with more clarity.

At this point, I would be fine with holding onto our tradeable picks, maybe making some small trades/signings but more or less running last year's team back. If an "upgrade" from Vando or Rui to Jerami Grant costs at least one pretty juicy future pick and maybe two, I'm not sure there's a collection of moves we can make this summer that can realistically put us in a position to get through a regular season and win three series in the West.

The West feels like where it was in like 2013; the old guard is falling by the wayside and the conference is too deep with young teams on the rise or superstars squarely in their prime. Maybe the move is to acknowledge the window is closed, see what Redick can do with more or less the same roster, enjoy watching LeBron's last season or two, win 40 something games (maaayyybe 50 if we get good health luck), have a puncher's chance in the playoffs and accept the risk that LeBron maybe opts out next summer. Move on and build for the future while Jokic/Luka/Ant/Shai battle it out for a few years.

yeah, we're not as bad as we looked last year. we're certainly not in the tier of favorites, but there might be deals that present themselves and change that. they're probably not here right now.

i'm just saying they were asking for him from us. i don't think others see daniels and max as equivalent. daniels was a top-10 pick who has at least shown that he's a very good defender. max hasn't shown anything on a consistent basis yet (i believe he can and have seen flashes, but nothing consistent).

so yes, i'd have given max + 2 picks, no problem. i don't think atlanta takes that. we'd have had to match salaries, too, which complicates things.

so then you're at max/dlo/gabe or vando and maybe three firsts from us. that's getting expensive.

I did see a couple places we were less willing to guarantee him a starting spot (nothing concrete). Guess we wanted to see how the rest of the summer went. Maybe that also factored.

Why didn’t we offer Jonas the deal he got? Has this already been explained?
