I grew up studying Nash's game as a PG. The guy was my second favorite player after Kobe. We even had the same haircut for a while. But this was long overdue and I won't miss him as a laker.
Open roster spot goes to who now? Roscoe Smith? Maybe Will Bynum if he gets waived? Maybe Daniel Gibson? He's familiar with Byron and we need the guard depth now.
Well atleast he's accepting that it's the end & not trying to convince them to let him do what he did last season, so we'll atleast get his salary paid by insurance and an exception. That's the least he could do after we let him go over 10 games last season when we should have stopped him at 9 & opted for medical retirement to give us an extra 9M in cap space last summer. That could have been the difference in being able to offer 2 players like Lebron & Melo or Melo & Bosh 2 max contracts instead of just being able to go after 1 star. Who knows if it would have made a difference but atleast we know where we stand now. Looking foward to seeing if Price can keep up the outstanding defensive effort as the backup PG all season.
I hope we pick up Roscoe Smith. I like him and his energy a lot. I don't think we need another PG. I'm good with Lin/Price and even Clarkson (though he's not really a PG) in a pinch. With the injuries to X and Swaggy P, coupled with the inconsistent play from Wes and the disappointing shooting of Ellington so far I think we need a wing player pretty desperately. Grab Roscoe and call it a day.
So do the Lakers simply get that cash back or is that salary cap space we get back? From what I'm seeing, this would barely even put us under the salary cap.
See I think that's where the Lakers' being a "player's organization" pays dividends. You're right they gave him the opportunity all last season in a year that was bust from the beginning. They even gave him the opportunity to come in and start this season. Those opportunities probably came with a hand-shake: if you can't do it, don't hang over us all season. If you can't go, then please for the love of God just drop it. Now for the rest of his life Steve Nash, a bona fide Hall of Famer, will let everyone know how the Lakers gave him every opportunity to play and retire the way he wanted, it just wasn't in the cards. Nobody can say we did him wrong. It sucks while we're going through it, but we're building a nice cache with players around the League. - We gave Kobe that massive deal even while he was injured. - We handled ourselves extremely well with Carmelo attempt even if he didn't end up here. - We've employed a number of ex-Lakers in many different capacities. - We let Nash have every chance to prove himself. That's not going to be overlooked around the League. I know it won't.
I think we get an exception for half his yearly salary maybe like 4 mil Thats what I've been reading everywhere. We still take the cap hit unforunately
Very, very sad to hear Steve had to end his career like this. I know he worked his a** off trying to get back on the court. I hope he stays with the organization in some capacity.
Wow. Feel bad for the guy. Really do. I just really wanted to see him him go out swinging. But someone did say that type of injury does not just go away. Not in a year at least. I wonder if that's something surgery would correct or at at least alleviate some of the pain. Nevertheless kind of a sad ending to a spectacular hall of fame career.
I would have liked him to have finished out the season with at least half the games played, but this was necessary. I respected Nash to the utmost in Phoenix. Wanted him to succeed here not just for the team, but also so I didn't feel so jipped on his contract, but it is what it is. Sorry to see him go kind of actually. He was a legend even if he wasn't that guy while he was with the team.
Just heard the news on ESPN driving in the car with Marcellus & Wiley (SP? who cares) But they more than once were talking about around $5.3 million it would be worth to us to use in a variety of ways. Full of crap? Or could it possibly be that high? Roscoe takes the spot on the roster? Are we down for that? Would Clarkson become 3rd string back up PG, in addition to whenever else Byron puts him in games? Anyone else on team now better to do that, leaving Kobe completely out of that conversation?
I read an ESPN rumor (at least I think it was....if so, don't know how reliable it is) that Phil wanted to just coach that season when Nash and Dwight showed up. IF THAT WAS TRUE, I wish they would have done it just to see they could have gotten a ring for Nash and Dwight. If everything else played out the same then so be it. I just feel bad that his career went like that. I'm glad he tried, but I'm also mad he didn't retire sooner if he knew there was a likelihood he couldn't come back this season. It's a whirlwind of emotions but mostly I feel bad for the guy. He DID want a ring, and I think he saw there was a chance here and the NBA Gods weren't nice to us in the actual outcome. Oh well. Live and learn.
Gosh ... man why did he have to play more than 10 games last year. It's just what's so hard to swallow. Nothing against the guy but that was just complete a waste of money and in my mind I just want to forget Steve Nash. Better now than later in the season. But I'm just pissed at how he handled all that.
If D'Antoni was still here.. I bet Steve would stay active... Scott basically told him that he lost his starting job... MDA would still be coddling him.
Is it wrong that I was thrilled to just come across this news? We can finally freaking move on from this disaster. Now I only hope we add a 3rd PG for insurance for Lin and Price. Wave Nash, sign someone else. Should have retired with dignity when you had the chance, Steve, or should have taken medical retirement and still got your money.
