If anyone is still unsure of where Fanta got that $100m price tag. You're looking at him

Latest from Stein on the HC gig

He also has this bit of significant reporting regarding an assistant coaching job for the Clippers which I'll tie back to us at the end
Is JVG and JJ both being in SoCal enough to get Stan to join JJ's bench? I'm sure he'd enjoy being closer to his brother while he's going through his personal stuff.

Dan Hurley says his wife Andrea was “angry and moved to tears” when she first heard the Lakers reached out and part of that was how much they know the brand matters, and how happy she is in Connecticut. “But after that, we handled it like adults and looked at all the variables.”

I didn't listen word for every word but I skipped tightly and must have missed it. Where did $100M come up and by whom?

Yeah, he really pulled one on us. His appearance on straight podcasts and engineering with woj tells it all. He wanted the publicity and get NBA doors open for the next high profile job available.
It's the cross we have to carry for being the Lakers. It is what it is.

On the Lakers not needing a coach before the draft, I put some thought on it and changed minds from my initial reaction. First impression was that it would be absurd. But the thing is, that pick will always be an asset, so we're likely picking the most high profile guy that we can trade down the line, unless it balls out here, so it's a win-win. Not sure a HC will change much about it, even if our pick is Edey.

For example, I imagine JJ wouldn't play Edey and AD together, turning Edey into a good tradable asset. If it's a HC that may play AD at the 4, Edey would have a shot at cracking the core rotation. It's a win-win

Now THAT would not suck!! That would be a GREAT plan B after the Hurley debacle. Which the more that is coming out now .... we handled fine.

I'd be excited all over again! I really like Jeff plus he's a wealth of knowledge about head coaching and they're colleagues now with backgrounds in NBA game broadcasting. Though JJ got Jeff's job. (Maybe Jeff's not cool with that?) Bring Rondo on and Handy back and that is one SOLID start to the staff.

Fanta is the guy that broke the 100M last week. Hurley went to his podcast today, hinting that Hurley was the source as they seem to have some relationship.

"Put it out there that my price tag is 100M and I'll give you an interview afterwards to bump your rep and followers"

Seems we got used but if the chance was there then the Lakers did no wrong here. I bet after talking to his wife on Thursday and him on Friday Rob and Jeanie knew it was a bad idea to offer him more than they did because it would cost them more when they really actually hired a coach. They had no warm fuzzies from the couple that they would actually accept any offer.

I guess this going to be a hard disagree. Sabonis outplayed AD their most recent 3 head to head games granted. Nurkic... really? Jokic he is the best player alive, but he hasn't exactly eaten AD alive even in the playoffs.

14 career playoff games between Jokic and AD:

    Jokic: 25.8ppg / 12.5rpg / 8.6apg / 0.6bpg / 1.5spg

    AD: 28.7ppg / 11.8rpg / 3.0apg / 1.6bpg / 1.0spg

No way to frame that as being eaten alive.

Hurley or his camp fed him the figure. It's just comical that a matter of days later Fanta has an 8 minute exclusive with him. The angling and games are funny.

Really only the new items: the concerning update that some in the building don't think we need a coach before the draft.

And then there's this update on the assistant coaching pool

About the 5 minute mark, he mentioned he liked the control he had. He can impact his own success. He can attract and recruit the players he wants to fit his system. Something to be said for that for sure.

course he does. the pesky absolute fact that we offered the job to another guy isn't going to get in the way of his story.

he was blindsided by the hurley news, and his whole brand is that that sort of thing never happens. he's in full spin control, still. never won't be.

i believe it. you don't get to that level as a reporter by being a normal, scrupulous dude. this is part of why the marc steins are kind of marginalized. shams is just another woj, though. i'm sure woj gets just as mad when he doesn't know something big that's happening.

it's a ridiculous place for many reasons, chief among them is guys like irwin rising to prominence. you can't tell me his personal emotions don't infuse every single thing he says, man. that's not being a reporter. that's being...us on a message board. you're either a pundit or a reporter, but you don't get to claim to be reporting when that's really not what you're doing. shams claims to be a reporter and reports. he doesn't go on rants about his subjects, and though he probably has biases, i can't easily discern them by just hearing snippets of what he says.

it's about the overarching narrative--that apparently tons of people see, which is why irwin's always having to defend himself! it's a continuation of the scrambling snake business. the implication is always that our front office--and really, rob, specifically--is just a dolt who only fails and really doesn't know what he's doing. but there's just a ton of evidence to the contrary, and the commitment to the story is damning at this point.

i have no idea why crazy people on the internet threatening anthony irwin is part of this discussion? what point is it making? that there's no way he could be biased because crazy people hate him? i don't wish this guy harm, but i think he adds basically nothing to my enjoyment of the sport or the stories surrounding it.

i saw the clip. what's the story, then? i'm to believe we had little to no interest in hurley (laser focused on redick, fake interviews with borrego, etc.), woj and hurley hoodwinked us into offering him a large sum of money to coach a professional basketball team, and then ran laughing into the sunset? or am i to believe the whole thing was an elaborate smoke screen because they were worried about the optics of hiring redick as the coach? both those stories are totally nuts to me. there are much simpler stories that work with the facts. mostly that we were probably interested in hurley (and probably 15 other folks, including redick) at the outset. we probably spoke with many of these people--some of whom shams or linda rambis's nail lady or whomever never heard about (!). something probably changed with hurley, mid-process, and we made the offer because he was always a prime target (it really makes no sense to do it if not). he said no, and we resumed the search in full damage control mode.

btw, our problem continues to be ownership. no other major pro sports franchise has a linda rambis. most don't even have a kurt rambis sitting around sucking the life out of things. people with largely undefined roles and power without accountability is a recipe for disaster.

what could kurt, linda, or the harris guy do to get fired? what would have to happen? there's no way, right? you can't have that.

someone in the comments said Irwin tweeted or "X'ed" something a lot of people found offensive. Didn't care enough to look for it.

But still, stupid people posting threats online that think they may follow through one day are basically signing their death warrant. Not very smart.

Like I said a few pages ago when it first came out, Hurley played us. His little PR tour confirms it for me. Honestly seems like we dodged a bullet because the man can’t hold water.

Noble of his wife to take the reputation hit for his greedy leverage play. I don't believe for a second she's this toxic, come on.

am i the only one who's listened to what hurley said and come to the conclusion that if we offered a ton of money, he was going to leave? that's how i read it (i think that's how his wife read it, too!). and yes, it's in line with what i thought before, so i'm ready to see it. i just don't see what he's saying as non-supportive of that. his wife didn't want to move. he loves his job. he's a hero there. all that is true. but he also has admitted he wants the nba, and he straight out said the lakers brand is very attractive to him. i just don't think it was much of a leverage play. his second championship provided a lot of leverage on its own.

I think there's always a number for anyone. But if that's what lures him to go from coaching teenagers to coach one of the GOATs in the biggest franchise in the NBA, he's not it. We didn't offered him pocket money, he received the largest offer ever by the franchise and one of the highest in the league.
He could have also said to us "my value is X". It's not reported that he did and we rejected, if we are going with reports and his interview.
So we just believe what we want to believe
