The NBA is such a small fraternity though, you never know who these guys might have connections with, personal or professional.
Really fascinating break down of the $ offered to Hurley Yeah no way he was uprooting everything for less money. Whether it was about money, control, leverage, legacy. That's just not happening for that amount. Ever.
Don't we have people, that are supposed to crunch numbers like these? Factoring in cost of living, and taxes should be SOP, when preparing an offer Well. We did unveil Kobe's statue with errors in the inscription.
This is a good point, I had no idea LeBron and Redick were friendly until all of a sudden they had a podcast together.
Yeah I'm not familiar with college and assistant coaches. I didn't even knew Hurley, started digging when he was mentioned and liked what he offered. Also didn't know Nori or Adelman. I follow NBA a lot but don't know the assistant coaches, to be honest. I remember we discussed plenty here about other non-JJ options (I even remember abeer continuously asking who was out there that could be a dinasty coach) and absolutely no one mentioned Hurley. Also, none of these "insiders" and "NBA experts" ever mentioned Hurley as a prospect, even in segments of just brainstorming who's out there. I think it was Washington that hired last week a new HC, Brian Keefe if I'm not wrong. Never heard of him. This to say that I'm pretty sure we have a long list of like 30 names we could target, at least that's how I would do it. Then categorize them regarding preference, feasibility, cost, timeline, etc and I trust many have never been mentioned. I think people trust way too much of these insiders. It's fun to pass time during the off-season to listen to them, but most of the time they know nothing and I believe we are still considering names we, fans and insiders, have no idea yet. We just have to wait and see. I'm in the team "short-term solution" now, if the right guy isn't available. I also think it's not the right time to hire a long term coach. LeBron Lakers and non-Lebron Lakers are really different. Personnel you need, roster construction, how you handle the regular season, the culture you want to implement. Not to mention the impact he has in your communication, management and style of play. It makes all sense to start fresh when LeBron is done. Yeah, I also never bought that AD-Borrego link. Even heard "AD was impressed with Borrego in the month and a half they were together" from an insider lol, c'mon... I wasn't impressed with him in Charlotte and I hope it's not him. But don't know him deeply and he deserves benefit of the doubt because...Charlotte. We really have to wait, but draft is around the corner
Vegas has thoughts Windy says Borrego met with the Cavs for two days. That sounds like the favorite to me.
I'm sorry but if Borrego is the top choice, I'd much rather just run it back with Vogel. The man was given a reallyyyy bad situation, and I think given a way better roster like the one we have right now, he would do a lot better. Also, he was put in a SH!T situation last year with the Suns...so many injuries all year and he still managed to get them to the 6th seed despite having the most BRUTAL schedule down the stretch. Unfortunately they ran into a red hot Twolves that were just clicking... I really hope somehow Vogel's name comes back into the fray and surprises everyone.
it wouldn't make any sense to go back to JJ at this point. He was the clear favorite to the point the FO was apparently just pretending to still be on the coaching search, and then he wasn't, that indicates something happened, most likely that story about the Lakers roster (meaning AD) not being on board is at least partly true. but then again, nothing makes sense with this FO, so they may still circle back to JJ.
i could totally see us still hiring him. despite me trashing the early reporting, i don't think there was just nothing to our interest there. i just think it got overstated and took on a life of its own, then the reporters started trading on fan outrage to boost their exposure. when the dust settles in the next two weeks, all sides will start leaking their versions, and we can try to sort through the whole thing to figure out who we need to be most mad at, lol
I’ve been in agreement with you regarding Rob since he masterfully got out of the Westbrick debacle. I also agree that it’s going to be extremely difficult for us to compete, not because we are “cheap,” but because there are many Franchises now who can lose many millions every year in salary and tax penalties and their owners don’t have to worry. As for Hurley, I’m convinced that he used us to get a higher payday. Yeah, he may have been slightly interested in the gig, but by using his boy Wojshrill, who has never had an insider within the Lakers, to spew out hot air, it became painfully obvious. Anyway, I honestly don’t care who they hire now because I’m out of F’s to give regarding this mess. Hire Ron Ron as the Lead, with a staff of Rondo, Marv Albert’s toupe, Bobo the Clown, the reanimated corpse of Michael Jackson’s monkey Bubbles and Robert Sacre for all I care.
I’m not sure Hurley is going to be 50% honest. He’s never going to come out and say he used the Lakers and Woj as leverage to get a payday with UConn, which in my opinion he certainly did. The only reason the Lakers talking to him came out in the press was because of Woj and Hurley is the one who leaked that to Woj, not the Lakers. It all would have flown under the radar otherwise but Hurley needed UConn to feel the heat.
He's milking it. I guess he wants the NBA but didn't want this gig. I think he'll be in the league in the next 2 years
i'm still hung up on why we allowed it if that was the case. i agree we were used for some leverage (and really, just elevating the guy's profile/brand nationally and locally), but we could have easily thrown water on it. so then you have to subscribe to the idea that we made an offer (a weird one, imo) as a show to hide our true intentions and made ourselves look bad in the process. what do we get out of this? our standing with other candidates got trashed. our brand got mocked nationally (very bad for business). all for cover from hiring jj redick? doesn't add up to me. i feel like we probably reached out early to hurley (same time as others) and were told no. then hurley thought more about it and considered it. we thought we had something, and it didn't happen. my annoyance with the organization is in the last part--you can't think you have it here, you have to know. if you don't know, you just don't make the offer. the press release is that you had some really good conversations, maybe you'll talk in the future, but now wasn't the right time for either of you.
