Dave McMenamin was just on SVP's SportsCenter with an update. - thinks we'll swing back to going after an experienced HC - Bron and AD's input will be heard (the latter seems to be a new development in the HC process) - 3 of the candidates he's heard within the past 6-7 hrs have ties to Bron -- Lue, Kidd and JJ ( only one of those are currently available) Kidd?! Again. We're entertaining that again? Ugh!
Mavs advanced. Think Kidd is safe. Lue is probably getting paid this offseason. That leaves JJ. I already feel like they're trying to sell us on him. I could imagine going through the interview process and the Lakers doing the research on a head coach but also possible assistant and see if they can align any with Reddick.
https://www.bet.com/article/xbgy9y/8-former-nba-coaches-college-basketball deep cuts into a coaching search.
going after a college coach would be even worse than going with a rookie HC. aside from larry brown and brad stevens, college coaches never have success in the NBA
Because usually college coaches have little idea of the pro player but since these guys all played or coached in the NBA 10 plus years that wouldn’t be the problem
I wouldn't expect him to say anything other than that regardless of his feelings. He is under contract by them and is trying to get Ballmer to give him a huge contract. According to this (Irwin's summary, haven't read it yet) : - Extension talks have yet to take place between LAC and Lue - Expectation is the Clippers would once again block conversations between Lie and other teams - Lue wants to remain with the Clippers
Let Lue stay where he is. With no media protection from Balmer, he would have a panic attack or a mental breakdown few months into the season. "Team B", no one cares about, is a good place for him.
and i'd argue that stevens' success was basically with a college team. when his players started getting more experienced, he bounced to the front office quickly. yeah, i know i'm in the minority, but i don't think lue is some sort of master. people talk about him like he's popovich or spoelstra when i don't think he's that much better than your average nba coach. he gets kidglove treatment from all sides, imo. he got out-adjusted in-game by a jason kidd staff this week, for example.
What do you guys think of Juwan Howard? I think the Lakers considered him during our last coaching search. He was an assistant coach in Miami under Spoestra, has done well since being the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines (Pelinka’s Alma mater) and has recently won some college coach of the year awards while also making it to the sweet 16. I don’t watch any college basketball, so if anyone can provide any insight on his X’s and O’s as well as the type of culture he sets (hopefully it’s the Miami Heat type culture), that would be good. He was more actual coaching experience than a JJ Redick, but probably would benefit from a lot of strong assistant coaches for NBA world. He was also teammates with LeBron during the Miami championship years, so he could really be someone LeBron respects and supports as a coach.
He is already assistant in Brooklyn https://netswire.usatoday.com/2024/04/26/nets-rumors-juwan-howard-agrees-to-be-assistant-coach/
