I personally don’t see our roster being commanded by JJ Reddick, I don’t see him coming in and commanding respect, I just don’t see it, he’s 39 and barely out of the league. I think someone like that needs to to a young team and work his way into the job, that is not this job, this job is titles or bust. He’s never even been an assistance coach, like he has zero bench experience, I’m just not sure how I feel about that, even Luke had that, Ham had a ton of that. If Reddick came on he would need a top quality staff of more experienced guys. If we’re looking at guys that have never coached at all as well, I think I’d be more interested in Rondo than Reddick, LeBron and AD respect the hell out of Rondo and I think he commands respect from going his as well. At the very least I’d like to see him on our staff with whoever we hire, dude is a smart basketball mind. All that said, I just don’t want Budz, all the complaints about Ham I keep reading about Budz, he would he a big mistake.
If we're going the unproven route, I'd love to hire Rondo. But his off the court stuff will prevent that. It's kept him from getting an interview with us before. Maybe he can get on as an assistant, we did employ Jason Kidd after all. It seems unlikely we we can get Lue unless he plays hardball, they lowball him, Bron really wines and dines him, and/or we offer pick compensation. The timing of the extension report today was just hilarious. I'm sure the two events weren't related... I don't love the rest of the crop. Biggest difference with JJ and the other first timers is he's got Bron. They see the game similarly and geek out over xs&os. We have videos of this. 6 of them at this point. I'm sure Bron has been offered 50 different podcasts with countless cohosts. He chose to do one over basketball concepts and get in the weeds with JJ. The biggest necessity with anyone and especially a first timer, Lakers have to spend BIG on assistants. Poach top ones from other teams. Get the best and at least one has to be a former HC. I speculated earlier this might be the way they go. First time coach will be cheaper, no matter how much buzz they have. That matters when we're still paying Darv and the top guys now are all getting 8 figures a year. That might not be something Jeanie's able to do. BUT even the best assistants are much cheaper than that. You could get a rookie HC, two top flight assistants and a few more quality assistants for $8m or under, which is at least $2m less than what the going rate is for the upper tier coaches.
I actually agree with you, we have some slim pickens right now. I will likely change my mind many times...lol.
Lue not looking likely https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/40077385/clippers-want-sign-coach-ty-lue-extension
Please god NOOOOO!!! No mark Jackson No doc rivers No Ron Jeremy I mean Stan Van Gundy No jj reddick No Hue Brown No anyone from the TNT desk
What I feel is dread, the only coaching hire I liked after Phil was Frank Vogel, and this Rob led front office have no real accountability so it’s always an impending disaster in my mind
I'll change the thread title and turn this into the Official "..." so and so coach when we hire the another coach officially if that's okay moderators. That way this thread will have a long shelf life and you could move the Ham thread over the NBA Discussion or whatever you guys decide to do. I'm just not trying to be a pain in the a**.
Reddick/Stotts - I could be sold on. Give Stotts the associate head coach role, and let Reddick be the face and learn on the job. With Stotts, I'd try to sell him on the title and a higher pay grade. He could run a team and our offense would be humming along. He knows the offense side of the ball very well. With Reddick, LBJ, and Stotts, we'd be fine there. Defensively? I would opt for a defensive coordinator. Ham used more drop coverage schematically, but I'd be open to different coverages particularly if we change some of the pieces on the roster. That way we could drop, switch, blitz, etc. Stotts/Atkinson are my other choices after thinking about it today. Reddick being the sexy choice, good-looking guy, speaks well, etc. Remember, Lue was 38 when he took over the Cavs and Bron was a big part in helping Lue. That's where I'm at as of today. Have a good weekend, fellas.
lue has all the leverage to land himself a huge contract. ballmer will pay him whatever it takes to keep him from going to the lakers
I just don't see Ballmer letting Lue out even if Lue and Paul requests it. If so, he'll require some compensation from us? Why not, I would. Chances are he stays in Clipperland and gets paid handsomely. That's fine. Big thing is this: we're not hiring Rivers and Ireland basically said Jackson isn't happening. Hope we nail this hire.
