Yeah I read from multiple reporters (Kyler especially) who kept saying it wasn't weed that teams were worried about. He hinted at cocaine, but he said it was a more serious drug for sure. I think Robert has some serious addiction issues, but those can be beaten. He needs direction, purpose, and he needs help. I think Dr. Buss would have found a way to get him those things... I'm not sure the Buss children think that way.

I've seen marijuana more and more as the official story.

Whatever it is, he is a special talent. Maybe he will find that focus and direction and be an important player for us, who knows?

Limited investment, limited role, limited pressure and responsibility, limited money, and lots of support.

Low risk high reward possibility. Hope he makes it-addiction is tough to kick.

If Marijuana is the story then half my trepidation is gone, but I'm almost certain it's not marijuana.

It's not marijuana. You don't get kick off 2 university schools for marijuana.

For what it's worth, I worked as a tutor in the athletic department at FSU when I was doing my PhD. For repeated offenses you can be kicked out of school; Upshaw was never kicked out of a university. He was dismissed from teams. FSU was more likely to remove you from the team for drugs than they were for theft, rape, and assault.

Gotcha. I hope it is just marijuana he has a problem with, but I don't sense that. Either way, I wish him the best and hope he's on our team by October...

I have no insider info here; I've read everything I can find on Upshaw. Some people speculate it's cocaine, but there's never been any evidence to support that.

Having a support system will take him a long, long way. Something as simple as giving him Mitch/Byron/Jeannie's number whenever he wants to chat makes a HUGE positive impact on his life.

College atmospheres don't offer that, outside of some of the really genuine coaches out there.

We've shown that we can be a really good atmosphere for the people that have big mental issues, I'm confident he turns it around.

A lot of these rookies are having good showings in Summer League already. Johnson, Winslow, Aaron Gordon from last year is starting off hot.

Russell is going to have enormous pressure heaped on him from the start.

Myles Turner looked really good too. Now I can't wait until Friday! Why don't Lakers play in the Orlando summer league or the utah one?

Since we have zero ability to lure any FA, might as well lock him up on something. Hand him something non guaranteed and/or with team option. Keep all the control, keep him working hard, having to prove himself, and having to behave. Otherwise we'll lose him too and with the summer we've had, we can't afford that embarrassment too

    That's a good question I don't know why we don't.

Considering Russell worked out with Upshaw, me thinks they will have a good chemistry off the bat. As long as Upshaw can finish those looks, I think he has a great chance at making it.
