This isn't on Ham. GS is starting 3 all defensive type defenders, with Klay and Steph who are not bad either. We don't have anyone on the roster unless DLo goes off with the same type of gravity as Klay and Steph. That means teams will go under (not over like Lakers are doing) and when you go under screens it negates the screeners ability to roll by a 1/2 second, add in that Vando just is not a decisive cutter like GP2. Add in that he can't finish over the top of Looney and Draymond and it's a mess. Lonnie explosion allows him to just shoot over those two
i could see starting lonnie or even rui over him, tbh. though i also think if he cans a couple threes again, we win going away.
You're right, but this is the part that needs work in the offseason: "add in that Vando just is not a decisive cutter like GP2." We've seen that work in the regular season. With improvement there, it can work in the post season as well.
The kid only attempts a handful of shots a game. I don't see it as this big issue, frankly, I think almost half of his 3-pt attempts come from guys(especially Lebron) that seem to make a concerted effort, to get the ball to him for that corner 3. It's going to happen in the flow of the offense some, but I notice that Lebron passes up guys with a decent look sometimes, specifically to get Vanderbilt that shot. Maybe he's trying to get him going or reward him with a look for playing good D. It's not always the only option available IMO.
i think it's because if he hits even one, it's a big deal, because they're banking on him hitting zero. much like when payton hits a three against us. he's open for a reason. we're now the league's top defense. this is the shot we want you to take, and if you make it, we might be in trouble. when vando converts a couple, we get 6 points out of thin air.
I'm with you..he probably makes that shot a lot in practice too. I also think that's what Lebron is thinking, one day we might need him to hit that shot.
IMO you're discounting the impact when he's not taking shots - his lack of gravity makes it tougher for the rest of the offense. There is a reason a guy like Beasley got paid and he's basically worse at every aspect of basketball except for shooting than Vando.
i don't think i'm discounting it; i'm one of those who defended beasley simply because people had to guard him. that said, i think whoever's in vando's spot (especially schroder or lonnie) will likely also be left open. gs can't play all 5 of our players.
i think gs would kill a matchup zone, or any zone, really. unless you mean, what if they zone up on us, but that's essentially what they do in part when they ignore vando.
Looks like Vando is gonna start again. The problem is his weak offense leads to weak defense as GS gets out into transition after misses/turnovers. We started the game with a 12 point deficit and the 2nd half on the receiving end of a 9-2 run. Those are the only minutes Vanderbilt played.
If GS wants to give Shroeder and Walker open 3's: I'm ok with that. both of them are not movement shooters but open and catch shoots and they'll bury them particularly at home
Ham doesn't adjust quick enough. He usually eventually does, like trying Lonnie, or stopping playing LeBron at C, but it takes far too long. He's a relatively good coach overall, but these mistakes could cost us.
i'm guessing the hook will be quick tonight. if they're exploiting vando's lack of offense to good effect on the first few plays, i think he'll sit. i'm not as confident they will. schroder's shooting 29% and walker 33% on similar numbers of attempts to vando's 25%. guessing gs will play those odds.
They difference is those guys can put it on the floor to score. Vanderbilt is shooting 18% in the series so he's not good from anywhere. We'll see how things go though
He is surrounded by scorers everytime he is on the floor. I think Jarred's offense is a plus. How he plays on D tonight will determine how long he plays.
yep he's can't score off cuts either so he's not a corner 3 set or a roll threat - Lakers have been getting killed in his minutes last few games because of this. Offense either gets bogged down and that allows GS to get into transition.
That is not what's happening at all..but for some reason you are stuck on repeatedly saying it tho. Kid took two shots in 11 mins, and somehow his offense is some kind of thing? Nonsense I mean seriously, you overlook the bad shots, missed shots, and turnovers by these other guys. Yet you continue to sieze on the 2 or 3 shots Vanderbilt puts up? That s*** is ridiculous man. The kid has taken 3 shots in the last 2 games, and played a total of 21 minutes. Find something else to complain about.
