Lakers Draft Day Prospects June 22, 2023

Wow (maybe?) …. would not suck if we could snag him at 19 years old with some real skills at 7’1” and already 230lb. Not seeing in short search his wingspan. What say you Laker scouts and FO? Probably too big for Ham’s liking (hope not really the case when hypothetical talent is considered) but we’re going to need someone in Wembanyama’s zip code height wise and won’t be the only team thinking that.

Haven’t seen him except these couple clips but doesn’t look as limited skills wise both sides of ball as the even taller dudes, and Beverly’s gone so Ham can’t use him on Victor. Sorry Darvin.

am i misunderstanding the play-in implications for the draft? i thought that if you lost in the play-in, you then became part of the lottery. that would mean our draft position (and thus NO's) is not fully set.

i've seen it claimed in more than one place that if a 9/10 team gets in, they're not in the lotto, which would indicate that the 7/8 team they replaced would be.

not sure where this person found it, but:

sounds to me like if we drop both games, there's a chance we're drafting somewhere other than 17? for example, if NO beat us, we're in the lotto, and they're the 8 seed, and they have the swap. if okc beats us in the second play-in, both us and NO are in the lotto, with us getting the lower of the two picks.

That's very interesting...so basically what would need to happen is OKC needs to beat Pels, and Twolves need to beat us, and OKC needs to beat us in order for both Pels and Lakers to be in the lotto but the Lakers would still finish "above" Pels so the swap wouldn't hurt us in that situation?

Very nice consolation to potentially end up in the lotto WITH the Pels but it woudl suck if the Pels made the playoffs and we didn't and they get to swap with us if we somehow moved UP in the lotto...would also suck if both pels and lakers are in the lotto and the lakers move up and thus pels get to swap us for a top 4 pick and we'ree stuck with like 13th or 14th....

 

I'd rather we just make the playoffs and we keep 17th pick so the Pels don't have a chance at a lotto pick.

Now imagine this...what if we traded with say Orlando Magic for the 12th pick? They already have the 6th pick and already an abundance of young players...maybe they don't want to pay and they'd rather trade down and gain an extra asset down the line? Or we just do 17th/47th/cash for 12th pick?

Another team we could trade up with is Utah - they got Minnesota's pick at 16th so we could also move up one to get someone we want.

I can see Rob trying to pull off a deal with the Magic...going from 17th to 12th and then we can go the undrafted route in the 2nd round again.

 

I wonder how that works if NO then looks at that #12 pick and thinks OK “we” want to swap NOW? Probably is a decision they have to formally make some time frame prior to the draft, after which Rob is free to do whatever, if they decline the swap this year?

 

To my understanding, if you make the playoffs you're not in the lotto. Doesn't matter if you finished 7 or 10th. Basically in the end of the play-in, the 14 teams out of the PO go to the lottery, based on their regular season record.

So the Pels only get a lower pick than us if they go to the playoffs and we don't.

 

I don't think that's how it would work. But it would be good to get clarification from someone that covers Lakers (Jovan Buha / McTen type).

 

we'll see how it shakes out, but this is a draft where the guy we'd take at 12 might be available at 17 anyway. there's a lot of parity/confusion starting around that 10th spot (even before, really) in terms of prospect rankings. reminds me of the year we took THT. i saw mocks with him as high as late lotto and as low as where we took him (mid- 2nd round). i've seen some of that this year, too. so i expect some shuffling around at fairly low cost with teams having very different draft boards.

they can only swap for our pick, afaik, not one we trade for using our pick. the team with whom we'd be trading rights would have to do so understanding that the one they're getting could drop in value. but yeah, any trade will happen now will be after the order has been set, so it's moot.

or if we both go lotto and our lotto pick ends up higher. as fabfour said--it's best if we just avoid the lotto entirely and eliminate any risk of handing over a top-4 pick.

NO's dream scenario is they win tonight and we lose, then they beat us. they go to the playoffs AND get our lotto pick, wherever it lands. boo. let's just win.

 

yeah, maybe i've got the rules wrong, but now we're locked into either 18 or 17. how could we move up one? i think if the heat win their game, they go in as the 8 seed in the east, but they'd have a better record than us and thus draft lower, as record, not seed determines draft order. if the heat lose, then whomever gets in from the east has a worse record than us and keeps us at 18.

i think whoever reported that 17 a couple days ago made a lot of assumptions. reasonable assumptions, but assumptions nonetheless.
