The front office has been steadily working the phones for the last year and change so I don’t put much stock one way or another into these quotes.

Yeah, I’m somewhat buoyed by the Rui Nunn trade. It’s not enough to get us contending but it was a solid move and came seemingly out of the blue. I’m glad we finally did something. And all this talk back and forth with Rob is simply that. If there is a great move to make I hope he’ll do it and won’t get curtailed this time by the committee (Rambis, Jeannie …whoever). The picks are very valuable. Hopefully we use them wisely or save them wisely. Gotta see what happens at the deadline before I put too much stock into the words being bandied about right now with the media.

i fully expected something like the rui trade. my only concern is that the possible missed opportunity with indy this summer might tip us toward a rash trade in the coming weeks. i'm not expecting it, but it's a fear for me.

You know, I had a thought, and this is unrealistic and gives Rob too much credit for his NBA chess abilities. BUT what if he jumped on the Rui deal when he did and "overpayed" with 3 second rounders when some media members say he should've gone for two or that we lost the trade in order to reset the market? Wizards were asking for a first for Rui. So if he goes for seconds, then that should begin to course correct the other asks and two firsts become one, one first becomes protected/multiple seconds. If others start to base their move of the Rui price did Rob adjust the market himself OR is it just that deadlines create action and teams become more realistic?

At this point I'm like -- just don't trade for Draymond, and it's all good.

Probably a little too much NBA chess cred JSM, but it was good to see him maneuver this one regardless. They wanted the first, we weren't willing to do that for this kind of move and got it done for 2nds, one just being a swap with the Wiz. Just very solid negotiating. Going to be very interesting to see if we are able to make another trade at the deadline to improve. I sure hope so. This one takes a little pressure off until then by getting rid of deadweight redundancy, eliminating Ham's four guard lineups at the same time, and giving us an intriguing wing with size who can help us now and might be a building block for the future. I'm no longer chomping at the bit for the Bogdanovic trade although I'd still like it to happen - or something similar.

i think he told detroit and other teams he's been talking to that he means business about not moving unprotected 1sts for non-stars. if the message was sent for others, great, but he sent it for himself. even if he doesn't love rui, 2nds are low cost, and we only gave up one of our own. worst case, rui sucks and walks, and you're out a couple seconds that can be purchased later. but you've made us less desperate for length on the wing and less accountable to "DO SOMETHING" in the short term, which might grease the gears for something else to happen.

I feel like some of you guys are so ready to defend Rob, just to like counter guys like me who aren’t happy with him, that you sometimes miss the point. I get the larger point being made, I agree it’s smart to be careful with the picks, I never didn’t. My point was I don’t like Rob’s mentality, I don’t like how he keeps moving goalposts either. Before we heard any trade for the picks needs to make us a championship contender, now he’s saying it needs to make us a championship FRONTRUNNER. That’s moving the line, that’s making it so vague that he really doesn’t need to do anything, because who the hell knows what trade would really do that. So again, based on Rob’s history I read that as “only for a third star”, a Beal, LaVine, Durant, etc, and I don’t agree with that mentality. I think that does much more damage to the franchise’s future flexibility than trading a first for Bogdanovic or 2 for Hield and Turner just as an example. To be stuck with a contract like Beal’s, or another injured player like LaVine, and a roster of minimums around them, it’s just Russ in a new coat of paint, it’s dumb.

And I already know people are going to come to Rob’s defense against this post as well, I’m not a mind reader, of course the picks should only be used on a star, etc etc. But that’s just my opinion, we won a title with AD and LeBron and a deep team, the third star thing is the wrong way to go unless all of your stars were home grown which allowed you to keep them and sign multiple non minimum guys like with the Warriors. No other 3 star team has won a title in recent years that I can think of. My hope is that Rob is coming off of this stance and will be open to trading ONE of the picks for a really good player or multiple solid players rather than waiting for a star, and that this is just being put out there to the media to try and look not desperate.

I agree 100% and it's also my opinion that we should be willing to part with at least one pick for a non-superstar who could help us contend for the next couple years. The roster simply isn't good enough as is. I'd much rather give up one FRP either protected or not in a worst case to get said player than save both for a "superstar" who I frankly think isn't going to be available - at least not the right one. Beal is a no go for me. All that said, I'm fine with Rob's stance at this moment - just get a deal done to put us in a strong position to contend before the deadline. Until then it's just all talk and I don't care.

Cavs and Bucks all seemed to follow the 3 star model: sure they had very good roleplayers as well but the core was Lebron/Irving/Love and Giannis/middleton/holiday.

and if you flip Russ for Beal: Lakers are title favorites IMO
    C: AD/Bryant
    PF: Lebron/gabril
    SF: Rui/Brown/JTA
    SG: Beal/Walker/Reaves
    PG: Schroeder/Bevs/reaves

i guess i'm being asked to once again just say that nobody say said it's max player star or bust. that's a straw man to get upset about. it hasn't been said. it's been intimated by folks who want to be mad at the lakers or make fun of them or whatever.

right now, the supposed asking price for OG anunoby is more than we even have to offer if we wanted to.

i think a lot of that is posturing, but i don't want to be the test case that demonstrates an overheated market (like minny last summer, or us with the mozdeng). i'd much rather do nothing.

Yeah: Beal is interesting in that the contract (and I like the dude) is a nightmare and Lakers 1st rounders have the potential to be great. Wiz seem like such a messed up organization: instead of tanking - they gave Beal that monster deal (he's a #2 on a title team for heaven's sake) and are going to resign Kuzma?

do think people are looking at this and saying if you're not getting an AD back but dudes like Gobert and Murrey - this doesn't look like a very good idea. Feels like how the NFL changed after the Herschel Walker trade

yeah, beal for two firsts is probably no worse than bojan for 1, right? i don't like either deal because you'll be paying for them long after the player is useful.

holiday made less cash than beal but is an otherwise similar case in that he was overpaid for his role and then slotted in great as an expensive #3 to the tune of a title.

again, not shilling for beal here, but it's weird to me that that's the deal to be feared and not an unprotected first for like, gary trent.

Kyrie is still looking for an extension. He's a better talent than, Beal, Lavine or OG.

Cavs won in 2016, that’s quite a while ago. The 3 star thing ended when Durant left the Warriors, it’s not necessary anymore. I keep seeing people bring up the Bucks as a 3 star team, I disagree that they are, Giannis is, Middleton and Holiday are not by how I’m defining this, but I guess you could call it that based on their contracts. Still, 35-37 isn’t 47-50 as far as building a roster. Lastly, Beal would be a colossal mistake. Hard to be the favorites when he’s in street clothes with injuries and his 46 mil replaced Russ 47, can’t build a team that way.

his headcase is more of a threat than beal's dropoff, lavine's knees, or OG's lesser talent, imo.

you just can't rely on the guy. he'll go construct a yurt in the middle of the finals and live there in protest of commercially grown mushrooms or something.

guess it's a good thing we haven't traded for beal despite just completing a trade with the team who owns his rights, then, right?

I think that's overblown as a risk in LA. He's proven to be capable of dropping 40 on you in the Finals too. The guy is on another level talent wise, 2 picks is a steal
