It still doesn't make any sense. We have Westbrook's Bird Rights, so you can go over the cap to resign him to any amount. However if you renounce him, you can't use Bird to go over the cap. It's a contradiction. But you have to renounce him to have cap space?

The luxury tax is what deters you from gaming the system. Only if you aren't willing to pay it. How else could Golden State have a 215 million dollar cap figure next season with just their guaranteed contracts?

How can you be gaming the system with a contract that has already been fulfilled?

This is basically saying that all the guys on expiring deals we have, are free to sign anywhere they want, because they are UFA. Yet the team can't sign anyone, until these players decide where they want to play? They are unrestricted, because they fulfilled their contracts, but the team is still obligated to hold their cap space anyway? I'm confused here seriously.

You can’t eat your cake and have it too.

If you want bird rights, there is a cap hold that eats free cap space. Once you execute the bird rights it turns into guaranteed salary on your cap. If you decline the bird rights option, it opens up cap space. It’s pretty simple.

No it’s not just luxury tax that stops a team from gaming the system. It’s mainly things like cap holds. It stops a team from just signing everyone for a season to win a title. Luxury tax is punitive measures designed to even the playing field amount the mega rich and the not so well off franchises.

It's still only 34 million in cap space available, when you already have 98 million guaranteed. You still have to fill out your roster with that 34 million. So the cap hold thing still doesn't make any sense. It seems counterintuitive to have a salary held against your cap space, for a player that isn't obligated to resign with you in the first place. I'm still not quite getting this gaming the system angle. But if that's the way it works, that's really ridiculous. I guess you should just sign everyone to an extension, that you want to keep before the season ends.

I get it now I guess...cap holds are used to negate using Bird rights.

Cap hold are to prevent teams from abusing bird rights. A rich team would just sign unrestricted free-agents with their cap space first, and then use their bird rights to re-sign their own free-agents after. Imagine Steve Balmer in that system

I get it, it keeps teams from stacking players. If I'm an owner though, it should be allowed with some stipulations. Limiting the amount of times it could be done or something along them lines.

Abeer3 and svtr got me straight tho.

We haven't been consistent because we have had injuries to our best players during the season. Consistency will come when our players are healthy and playing together for more then 3 games. This injured team has beaten or just lost to some of the best teams in the nba. I can only imagine how good we will be when we get healthy.

    walker/jones/2nd for burks
    nunn/2nd for reddish

both work financially (though we add a bit to the tax bill). we get two sf-sized wings, keep our firsts, and don't do much to affect the current rotation.

i've gotten really keen on getting burks. while everyone is throwing unprotected firsts for bojan, we can sneak in and get a guy who's better defensively and has shot 40+% from three for the past 4 years running.

the nunn/reddish thing is just to get a look at a bigger guy/teams swapping disappointments.

Haven’t really been impressed with Hachimura when I’ve seen the Wizards but he’s got pretty good size/strength on the wing and it’s just a few second round picks. Totally fine with this move.

I hate the language Shams and Woj use in their desperation to be the first to report lol, does Shams going from “in serious talks” to “finalizing a trade” mean it’s done?

And yeah, I honestly don’t know too much about Rui’s game, but he seems to have the size we need and shot 45% from 3 last season.

I like it. Young wing. Solid prospect.

Nice old school out of nowhere move.

I believe he’s solid on both ends of the floor. I’m sure Cranjis or one of the other stat guys on Twitter will have something up soon.

    Oh boy

First take is that we continue to do business that no one has a clue. That really tells a lot about an organization, specially one like ours that is always in the spotlight

Second, he really fits a need. Strong 4 that can shoot the 3

Third, don't know much about him, I have him as a scorer rather than any other thing. Don't know about his defense

Fourth, we can only trade with Wizards?

Five, in theory it's a very good move. We trade a guy who was like our 11th guy for a guy who plays in our most needed position. And we only lose 2nds, great stuff
