i...don't understand. how do they circumvent the standard extension rules? or have i misunderstood them? i thought that largest raise he could get is 20% on an extension? what's this "adding to this seaon's salary" stuff?

They go from shopping him for 3 years straight and making a play for Ayton. To doubling his salary after 26 games? Maybe they are looking to trade him to the Suns.

The Indiana Pacers and center Myles Turner have opened up contract extension discussions and are exploring a potential new deal, league sources with direct knowledge of the discussions who are unauthorized to speak publicly on the matter tell The Athletic.

In his eighth season with the franchise, Turner is having arguably the best campaign of his Pacers tenure, averaging career highs across the board with 16.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 54.1 field-goal percentage and 41.7 percent from 3-point range to go with 2.1 blocks per night.

For Turner, this season has been the return to his natural position at center, which he has not played in five years. Behind him, their star guard Tyrese Haliburton, standout rookie Benn Mathurin and a solid supporting cast, the Pacers are contending for a playoff berth, currently at 16-16 and the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference.

The Pacers have the ability to reach a renegotiation-and-extension with Turner due to currently having roughly $25 million in salary cap space. The Pacers can offer Turner up to $19.1 million more this year on top of his $18 million salary to get him to his individual max of $37.1 million for the 2022-23 season alone, and then drop his salary in the following seasons of a potential new contract.

Pacers officials have discussed the renegotiation-and-extension framework with Turner’s agent, Austin Brown of CAA Sports, sources said.

It’s believed that extension conversations are still at an initial phase, with a March 1 deadline for the sides to reach a deal. Due to Collective Bargaining Agreement restrictions, no extension can be agreed upon between March 1 and June 30. Turner will have several factors to debate when deciding on a potential extension, including his personal development on this roster as well as stability given he’s played for four coaches in eight years and has fluctuating minutes and shot attempts at times. If an extension does not occur, Turner will enter unrestricted free agency in July.

Turner has been a frequent member of trade rumors throughout his Pacers career, and that only increased after the organization gave a maximum contract offer sheet to Phoenix’s Deandre Ayton last offseason. The 26-year-old Turner has remained focused on the Pacers throughout the trade whispers, leading to a breakout year now for the No. 11 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.

The Pacers are expected to continue to have an open mindset regarding the trade market and are not ruling out anything as part of their direction. The Lakers and Raptors are among the teams that have shown interest in Turner in recent months, according to league sources.

In the last 11 months, the Pacers have retooled their roster by trading away Domantas Sabonis to Sacramento in the Haliburton deal, Caris LeVert to Cleveland and Malcolm Brogdon to Boston. Pacers president of basketball operations Kevin Pritchard has been able to rebuild around franchise cornerstones in Haliburton and Mathurin to go with a blend of veteran and young talent such as Turner, Buddy Hield, Chris Duarte, Jalen Smith, Aaron Nesmith, Andrew Nembhard, Isaiah Jackson and others. For Turner’s part, his ability to pick-and-pop and defend the rim have jelled well with Haliburton this season.

Rival teams have expressed interest in Hield during the season, sources said. Hield, 30, has been a positive locker room figure for these Pacers and is averaging 17.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 39.7 percent 3-point shooting this season.

ah, it's the cap space. creative use of it. if i'm turner, i think i jump at it, assuming the average after this year is in the 25 per range. and i'd sign that thing before my next foot injury.

one thing that's hurt his trade value this year is his impending free agency, too, so even if he ultimately wants out of indy, this could be a way to get paid and still be able move.

so with AD now out for who knows how long, i'm guessing that pretty much kills any hope of the FO making a big trade? they can sit back and use AD's injury as an excuse for not doing anything because "we didn't get enough time to evaluate the team" or some BS like that

Well I guess we get a closeup on all these great trade prospects tonight.

    Rozier, Hayward, Oubre, Plumlee, Washington..

It will be interesting to see how they look against Lebron and our " scrubs".

Toronto is appetizing: good players on good but expensive deals and not performing to expectations.
Good year to restart and shed the contracts of the mid career guys and go young around Barnes

Just to reiterate, we gotta at least make a small move even with the AD injury for two reasons:
    1) added depth for this season and beyond
    2) this fanbase deserves it. Give us hope that we have a plan for fixing this mess that LeGM and Rob created

This is big news for us. Westbrook, Jones, JTA, 2027 1st (unprotected), 2023 2nd (Bulls pick), and, 2025 2nd for Rozier, Washington, Oubre, and Plumlee.

Absolutely… most of their core players would provide much needed help. Siakam, VanVleet, Onunoby, or Gary Trent would be huge for us

Injured on the 16th, barely 1 week. As for a timetable, CBS is reporting "has had a subsiding of pain in his right foot stress injury and is expected to re-evaluate the possibility of resuming play after another seven-to-10 days of rest"

So we are far better off than the doom & gloom media tried to make it as many here suspected seeing him without crutches or a boot. This is great news, I still hate the way the injury went down though, that was all on AD, trying to kick out and get a cheap foul off Jovic is not something he should be doing. I understand trying to get fouls but AD needs to protect his body first and foremost.

AD is a bit clumsy with his movements. I HIGHLY doubt he was intentionally trying to draw a foul. Foul seeking has never really been a big part of his game.

Sure if you watch it in slow motion there isn’t really any rhyme or reason to that movement of his foot, but again, he’s a clumsy dude. I think his foot just inadvertently kicked out as he was trying to contort himself into a position to get a good look at the basket since he was underneath it.

The ball was out of his hand when he lashed out with the foot so no, he wasn't trying to get a look though he could possibly have been trying to keep a close proximity to the basket for a miss and rebound.

It didn't get much traction since it was in the same piece as the Trae bomb, but Haynes also reported execs think DD might request out this summer

Instant upgrade with a starting level PG and puts Schroder on the bench where he should be and best serves us.
