technically, the bevs trade should have gained us leverage on indy because it freed up more space and turner is a likely candidate for our money next year if we preserve it (the FA market is SPARSE).

Underrated reason for why I may actually prefer a Utah deal if it allows you to preserve a pick AND cap room.

Part of the appeal of Turner is that I think he would be a great long-term fit next to AD and make us scary defensively. Part of the concern is his contract status and injury history. If he gets hurt and/or doesn’t end up liking it here, you just overpaid for a rental.

So if you get Utah’s expiring contracts to help improve our chances at competing this year, you preserve the cap space to make a run at Turner in the off-season and have more time to see if Turner can string together a season free of injuries. Eliminate the risk of Turner being a rental. And I think you can likely sign Turner next summer while maintaining enough cap room (and then still having the room exception) to add a few more solid pieces before you have to resort to only veteran’s minimum additions.

but does utah really have incentive to swap expirings (beasley/bogdanovic) for a bigger expiring? do we want to give up a first for it?

it mostly fits my desires for a russ trade, though (arguable whether beasley is a guy who makes our rotation, but he could).

The only way I even consider throwing Reaves into the Indiana deal is if it saves us a first round pick. Even then I don’t like it.

I’d prefer to do Westbrook/2 FRP’s for Hield and Turner then Westbrook/Reaves/1 FRP for Hield and Turner.

I think Reaves is as good as, and has much potential, as most of the first round picks in his draft class. So IMO he should have FRP type of value, not trade filler. I don’t think we could actually get a FRP for Reaves, I suspect execs around the league haven’t wised up to how good he is yet, but that’s how confident I am in the kid. The rest of the league will catch on soon.

Lot of people upset that we “sold low” on THT. But I think that was a case where I could have feasibly seen his value continue to drop. In Reaves case, we’d be “selling low” on stock that is clearly positioned to improve.

Two First Rounders for Hield and Turner is a terrible move. Turner is worthy of a lotto protected pick. Hield most definitely is not worth a first round pick period. We already have Bryant, Jones, AD and maybe Huff at 5...it's not some glaring need to cough up 2 first round picks just to acquire Myles Turner. Teams have been trying to dump Buddy Hield for 3 years in a row now, his 3pt pct has declined for 5 seasons in a row. That would be another poor decision on Rob's part IMO.

I'd package Beverley, Gabriel and a first round pick for Myles Turner by himself.

I guess they couldn't throw that in for the Beverley trade instead of Stanley Johnson.

It was a fun thought exercise when I was reminded earlier this summer that we had that TPE. Trying to brainstorm if it would be possible to use it in a way that actually made sense.

But nothing really came to mind. $2.7 million is just slightly more than most players veterans minimums.

What team out there had a player on such a small contract that (a) we would actually want, and (b) the other team would be willing to give up for nothing?

I don’t think there was really anything out there. This isn’t some high value asset that we mismanaged.

And no, I don’t think it would have been possible to bundle the TPE along with THT to avoid having to throw in Stanley.

This is why I often like to play devil’s advocate and defend Rob. Because the critiques are so vocal that it seems to be leading to this incorrect perception that Rob knows nothing and that all of us know more than him. Not the case.

Guys I promise it’s okay to take a breath and not interpret EVERY piece of news that comes out as some sign of incompetence from the FO that we need to attack them for.

Good for you. Send her some flowers. She will eventually be forced to sell. Not in the next few years, but it will happen.

So, TPE went bye bye? I guess Rob and Kurt are not enough, why not bring back Magic?
