On a side note, Phil Jackson is so awful on passing on his legacy to next generation. His coaching tree is pathetic. He got the results out of some of the greatest players ever but man he passed on nothing.

There's an expression in life "Leave the place better than you found it." Both Phil and Lebron are power hungry narcissists and are not givers, its not wonder they (Phil as a coach/Lebron as a player) are the absolute worst at empowering people around them. They leave places behind in absolute ruins.

I'm ok with Ham, Stotts, or Atkinson. I was honestly okay with keeping Vogel also.

The success (or failure) of this team really comes down to the availability of Lebron and AD. If either one or both miss significant time again, we're screwed and therefore, whoever we hire as coach will be gone in 2-3 years anyways.

The Lakers appear poised to make a decision on their coaching position soon, with Milwaukee Bucks assistant Darvin Ham, Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson and former Portland Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts the finalists for the job that became vacant when Frank Vogel was fired at season’s end. But as the final round of interviews is set, sources tell The Athletic that Ham appears to have made the strongest impression yet.

Now, the final stage of the process will determine who secures the job. Among the final group, Stotts is known for his strong X’s and O’s, making the postseason in eight of nine seasons in Portland, while Atkinson has been described as a sharp mind and tireless worker.

In terms of the Lakers’ preferences, sources say team officials have prioritized a coach who can command respect and authority from the locker room and who has a strong enough presence and voice to manage the varying roles and relationships across the roster. Those characteristics bode well for Ham’s candidacy. Throughout assistant coaching stops with the Lakers, Hawks and Bucks, Ham has been known for his no-nonsense style and ability to resonate with his players — attributes that have stood out in his communication with the Lakers thus far as well, sources said.

Ham, who played in eight NBA seasons from 1996 to 2008, is the only former NBA player among the three finalists. Even before he reached the NBA, however, Ham’s reputation as a force of nature was cemented when he broke the backboard while dunking during his 1996 NCAA Tournament run with Texas Tech. Ham, Stotts and Atkinson are in consideration for the Charlotte Hornets vacancy as well. Ham is also a serious candidate for the Hornets, according to sources.

All three finalists will soon meet with top Lakers officials — including owner Jeanie Buss — in Los Angeles for the next in-person stage, sources said. So far, Lakers vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka, director of basketball affairs Kurt Rambis, vice president of research and development Joey Buss and assistant general manager Jesse Buss have led the first stage of coaching interviews.

The Lakers have interviewed a total of six candidates, including Bucks assistant Charles Lee, Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin and former Warriors coach Mark Jackson. Lee and Griffin have not been ruled out as options as part of the process, sources said.

“In terms of what this team needs right now, we feel like obviously with superstars on our team, we want a strong voice that is able to inspire the players to play at the highest level of competition every night,” Pelinka said about the coaching search on April 11. “I think that’s going to be one of the resounding qualities that we look for, in terms of holding everybody from the top player on our team to the 15th man to a degree of accountability, and that’s going to be one of the many characteristics that jumps out today.”

Yet after all the recent discussion about influential voices in Laker Land, with Jeanie Buss known to be leaning on Phil Jackson and Magic Johnson as she attempts to course-correct from a 2021-22 season that was such a debacle, it’s fair to wonder who is making the decision here. A source with direct knowledge of the process shared the following insight on this front with The Athletic:

• Pelinka is heading the committee that will ultimately make the decision. Jeanie Buss, who has yet to be involved in the process, is not part of the committee and plans on deferring to its recommendation. Phil Jackson and Johnson aren’t part of the committee, either.

It’s only Lakers officials — none of whom are named LeBron James. While it’s known that James would have been enthused by the prospect of Mark Jackson getting the nod here, that obviously won’t be the case.

For the sake of context, it’s worth hitting the rewind button to the Lakers’ last coaching search three years ago. After narrowing their list to Monty Williams, Ty Lue and Juwan Howard, they ultimately wound up going with Frank Vogel for a variety of well-chronicled reasons. In those final interviews, Pelinka was joined by Jeanie Buss, Kurt and Linda Rambis, COO Tim Harris, Joey Buss and Jesse Buss.

• Considering the many unflattering storylines that have surrounded the Lakers in recent years, from Magic’s messy exit in April 2019 to Jerry West deeming them a “s***show” in December 2020 to the “I haven’t been told s***” Vogel firing that was executed so poorly, Jeanie Buss is determined to assuage any and all of the finalists’ concerns about the organization during this final stage. Her message, the source said, would focus on an organizational commitment to providing both the resources and internal support needed to inspire team success.

• The Russell Westbrook factor continues to loom large here. Candidates have been asked to discuss how they would use a roster that includes Westbrook, with Lakers officials operating under the belief he will be part of their program next season. Westbrook has a player option worth $47 million for the 2022-23 campaign.

As for the prospect of Westbrook being waived or sent home (a la Houston’s John Wall last season) if he is not traded, those are not considered viable options, and all indications are that he will play. With that in mind, the Lakers are focused on hiring a coach who is capable of navigating these types of sensitive situations.

Atkinson Stotts Ham, in that order. Ham is unproven so he is dead last in my book. Atkinson did the most with the least, coaching the rebuilding Nets roster to prominence so I’m thinking Reaves will be used well. Stotts was a consistent winner in the regular season and pulled some playoff surprises with Dame. We’ll probably hate anyone we hire after a few games

Do the finalists signal anything about the direction that the Lakers are headed?
Jovan Buha, Lakers beat writer: They show that the Lakers are going through their coaching search process with a more out-of-the-box approach than in years past. None of these names qualify as “stars” — the Phil Jackson, Rudy Tomjanovich, Mike D’Antoni or Tyronn Lue types that the Lakers have pursued in the past.

That’s partially because none of those options are currently available. But the Lakers aren’t just interviewing middling retreads as a consolation prize. Stotts is the closest thing to a traditional candidate, but he values more modern offensive principles than the Lakers have recently prioritized.

Meanwhile, Ham and Atkinson both have expertise in player development, which could signal the Lakers are thinking past the window of the James-Davis era. Regardless, all three are a stark departure from Vogel, either in strengths, experience and/or personality, so Los Angeles was true to their word that they wanted to shake things up.

Who makes the most sense?
Buha: Ham. He checks almost every box for the Lakers: he has ties to the organization (he was a Lakers assistant coach from 2011 through 2013), he’s won championships at both the playing and coaching levels, he has gravitas, players love him, he’s capable of leading both a contender and a rebuilding situation, and he has a strong pedigree (the vaunted Popovich/Budenholzer coaching tree). It’s difficult to find a knock against him other than that this would be his first head-coaching opportunity. But he’s been long overdue for a chance and he deserves one.

What's the timeline for the final decision?
Bill Oram, Lakers beat writer: That remains a mystery, although identifying finalists is certainly a significant step forward. But the Lakers seem to still be conflicted on what direction they want to go. Their three candidates bring vastly different skillsets to the fore. The only real indication we’ve gotten came from Rob Pelinka, who said he would like to have a coach in place by the draft on June 23. They have set themselves up to easily beat that timeline. And they should.

They need to land on an identity before free agency opens in July. The sooner they get a coach in place the sooner they can come up with a game plan for building a roster that can reverse the course from last season’s disappointment.

DARVIN HAM
Experience: Eleven seasons as an assistant coach with the Lakers, Atlanta and Milwaukee; won 2020 championship with the Bucks

The case for Ham: There aren’t many assistants waiting for their first head coaching job who are more experienced than Ham. A longtime disciple of Mike Budenholzer, Ham is a journeyman player-turned-coach who has been a piece of some of the best regular-season teams of the past decade and played a role in ushering in Milwaukee to where they are now among the NBA’s elite teams. He’s widely seen as a respected locker room voice, a key figure in skill development, and a gritty coach who asks a lot from his players on the defensive end. He’s a champion as a player and a coach, with an understanding of that unique alchemy required for winning chemistry. He played in the NBA – the other candidates on this list did not – which could help him build relationships in the locker room with stars who can be notoriously hard to win over.

Possible hurdles: It is no fault of Ham’s – he’s waited a long time for an opportunity – but the most obvious difference between him and the other candidates is that he has not been a head coach before. It’s a big jump, and while this has been a good year for longtime assistants-turned-head coaches (Boston’s Ime Udoka, New Orleans’ Willie Green), it could be understood if the Lakers feel hesitant about giving the keys of the league’s biggest franchise and biggest stars to a rookie. Another potential nitpick: While Ham was a Lakers assistant under Mike Brown, he’s spent most of his coaching career in Atlanta and Milwaukee, decidedly lower-pressure environments compared to L.A. Unlike many spots where he might have the benefit of time to gain comfort in his first head coach job, the pressure will be on Ham from Day 1 in Lakerland, where a championship is the constant expectation.

TERRY STOTTS
Experience: Thirteen seasons as a head coach in Atlanta, Milwaukee and Portland (517-486 record); nine playoff appearances (23-44 record)

The case for Stotts: Of the three, Stotts is leading the pack in experience. He’s a three-time head coach with short stints in Atlanta and Milwaukee, but he’s best known for his nine-season run in Portland that peaked with an appearance in the Western Conference Finals in 2019. Stotts had a winning record in six of those seasons, and is widely credited with helping develop Damian Lillard into an MVP-caliber player. His Xs-and-Os prowess on offense is also highly regarded. If the Lakers do take another crack with Russell Westbrook in the fold – which is seeming increasingly likely – Stotts might be the best of the final bunch to come up with some answers for how to use him effectively.

Possible hurdles: Stotts by far is also the oldest candidate at 64, and in those terms, it’s hard to imagine there’s more upside than his track record suggests. During his Portland tenure, he finished with only two top-10 defenses, and in his last two seasons the Trail Blazers were nearly at the bottom on that side of the ball. Having experience also means more scrutinizing your past work: Stotts has only ever gotten out of the first round three times in his nine playoff runs. It’s going to be a natural question that arises if such a coach can get the Lakers back to a championship, and if Stott’s best days are behind him.

KENNY ATKINSON
Experience: Four seasons as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets (118-190 record); one playoff appearance (1-4 record)

The case for Atkinson: Let’s start with who he’s worked for: Mike D’Antoni, Mike Budenholzer, Ty Lue and now Steve Kerr. Atkinson has been a trusted bench coach for some of the most dynamic, respected minds in the game. In his own whirl as a head coach, he took over a desperate situation in Brooklyn and helped the Nets rebuild, pushing the plucky group into a playoff berth in 2019 with the likes of D’Angelo Russell and Jarrett Allen. While he got squeezed out midseason the next year, the motivations have always been suspected to be more political in nature than due to his coaching shortcomings. Atkinson is known for doing a lot with a little, stressing player development and being a sharp all-around mind.

Possible hurdles: With the looming possibility that Westbrook is coming back next season, Atkinson would likely find himself thrust into similar power struggles with stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving that pushed him out in Brooklyn. Has working with Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson given him better bearings on how to work with influential stars? Is he ready to work with LeBron James, who in many ways will be much more powerful than he is? It’s also worth noting that while Atkinson has worked with some of the best offensive minds in the game, he’s known more for getting the best out of the defensive end – which the Lakers surely need, but is that the top concern of ownership after firing their own defensive-minded coach?

We need unproven out of the available candidates, we need to think outside of the box. If Nurse or some other top level coach were available, sure, go with the known, but Stotts is a retread, another from the coaching carousel, or musical chairs. All I hear about him is that he’s opposite Vogel, he’s great on offense and doesn’t know defense. No thanks. I keep hearing Ham is ready for this job, he’s super well regarded around the league, I think he’s the smarter choice. Stotts or Atkinson would be great as assistants though.

I still have PTSD from when Stotts was a coach here in Atlanta. He's grown a lot since then and had a solid run in Portland, but he was one of the worst coaches in franchise history in Atlanta in 03-04. Putrid. 52-85. Since the 50s, the only two worse Hawks coaches were Lloyd Piece and Lon Kruger. Like I said, a lot changes in 20 years but that still makes me twitch.

Would it be a good idea to do what we did with Vogel, and hire a big time associate head coach (Kidd) to help whoever we get?

After Reading the strengths and weaknesses of Ham/Stotts/Atkinson… it makes me want to hire all 3 to have a really good coaching team.

Make Ham the head coach, he might be open to having both Stotts and Atkinson on his staff since he would value these two are good and have experience. Stotts can help lead the offense, Atkinson leads player development and Ham can lead the defensive schemes.

The big thing about that is I’m sure Stotts and Atkinson can get head coaching jobs which is why they wouldn’t be open to this idea. But what if we offer them near head-coaching level salaries to be top assistants? It also helps send a sign to the rest of the league the Lakers are not being cheap and are serious about spending to be good.

Give Stotts and Atkinson both $4-5 mil/season contracts, give Ham a bit more since he will be the head coach ($6.5-7mil/season?)

Pincus with pros and cons of the finalists with execs and agents weighing in

What are the pros and cons of each candidate? We polled an assortment of league executives and agents to get an informed read on the Lakers' looming decision.

Stotts: Safest Decision
Of the three, former Portland Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts, 64, is the safest choice. His body of work is long and clear, starting as an assistant with the Seattle SuperSonics in 1994 (pre-dating Kobe Byrant's 1996 NBA arrival).

Stotts had a couple of two-year stints as a head coach with the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks, but he's best known for his nine-season run with the Portland Trail Blazers. Stotts joined the team in 2012-13 with then-rookie Damian Lillard.

Outside of Lillard's first year, the Blazers didn't miss the playoffs with Stotts on the bench, making three trips to the second round of the playoffs and one to the conference finals.

Does Stotts get dinged because Portland didn't win a title over that span? One argument is that Stotts had a roster that was never as balanced or deep as other top Western Conference rivals. Then there is the opposite take: He couldn't adjust enough to push his team to the ultimate goal.

Asking various executives (current and former) and agents around the NBA, most believe it's the former. He's a high-level offensive coach who can get the most out of whatever talent he's given. Fewer raved about his defensive acumen, though some pointed at Portland's undersized backcourt and a non-switchable center in Jusuf Nurkic as roster deficiencies.

Stotts may be the opposite of Vogel, a high-level defensive coach with a limited offensive repertoire. If Stotts is the hire, the Lakers should pair him with a high-level lead defensive assistant.

Some sources wondered if Stotts would struggle, like Vogel, to command the locker room's respect, although he worked well with Lillard for a long stretch.

Ham: The Best Fit
Ham, 48, has the shortest resume of the three candidates, and no head coaching experience. He started as an assistant in 2011 with the Lakers, spent five years with the Hawks and has spent four years with the Bucks. Last season, he earned a ring on Mike Budenholzer's staff. But overall, Ham is the most considerable risk if a resume is a primary qualifier.

But don’t make that argument to the Boston C Bags, who are in the Eastern Conference Finals with a rookie coach in Ime Udoka. Ham can't build a resume as a head coach without an opportunity. In part, Ham has the most significant upside because he's more of an unknown.

The Lakers may be willing to take that leap of faith because Ham spent two years with the organization. His personality isn't easily forgotten. Ham brings a lot of energy to a gym. He's arguably the best fit for the locker room, with veterans like LeBron James, Anthony Davis and possibly Russell Westbrook in need of a coach they can relate to and respect.

"He's the guy LeBron wants," a competing source said.

It will be up to Ham to spell out his basketball vision, in general and in context to the Lakers' roster makeup. He could be the hire if he can sell that side to the team's front office.

Atkinson: The Wild Card
Atkinson, 54, hasn't been around as long as Stotts, but he has nearly four years head coaching experience with the Brooklyn Nets. After working as an assistant with the New York Knicks, he successfully developed the rebuilding Nets into a playoff team, getting the most out of young players like D'Angelo Russell, Joe Harris, Spencer Dinwiddie and Jarrett Allen.

The acquisitions of Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant in 2019 shifted the Nets' priorities. Irving played in just 20 games, and Durant sat all year. Atkinson set the team up for a playoff run, but he and the team decided to part ways in early March, a few weeks before the pandemic shutdown.

"Kenny pushed for the parting just as much, if not more than Brooklyn," per Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports.

Atkinson moved on to coach under Tyronn Lue with the Los Angeles Clippers last season and is currently on Steve Kerr's bench with the Golden State Warriors. He has a strong reputation around the league for his basketball acumen and ability to develop players.

He also has a reputation for being a bit headstrong or rigid in personality. He's going to demand respect, but he's going to need to clarify precisely why he and the Nets divorced in-season. Is he the right coach for star players with strong personalities like James?

The answer needs to come quickly. The team doesn't have a pick in the June 23 NBA Draft, but most of the Lakers' offseason roster changes are likely to come in late June and early July. Locking in a head coach and style of play is a pressing priority.
