If HIV didn't destroy him, nothing will. Plus, I've shaken Magic's hand, one of the few people I have met in my life who were genuine when they said hello. Looked you straight in the eyes and smiled and appreciated being there with him.
Jerry Buss sleeping with all those women and winning championships at the same time only enhances his image lol
no wonder magic has come out saying he's not going to watch the HBO series i take it jeanie's series isn't fictional either then?
Not only are the writers working on a season two, but it this show succeeds then we might get a show about Pearlman's other Laker book -- Three Ring Circus. HBO has already optioned it https://uproxx.com/dimemag/hbo-showtime-lakers-series-option-shaq-kobe-book-pearlman/
The actor that plays Magic looks just like him, it's scary because it looks just like him at times. I was surprised how Jerry West is portrayed, like a raging maniac, yelling, throwing things around, he looked out of control in the whole 1st episode.
I wonder if Magic and Nixon really played 1 on 1. I envision the Jerry West portrayal as spot on. Can't wait for more episodes.
I read the book and the Magic/Nixon 1 on 1 is pretty much the only scene I didn't remember reading. Probably a just a story embellishment for TV. Thought that episode was awesome. Everything I could hope for in a show about my favorite people/time/place ever. Can't wait for the rest of the series. Curious where in the timeline this season ends.
You can’t be pissed with the truth though he was a competitive ornery bastard, he must know that by now
wouldn't be surprised if his portrayal isn't too far off from how he really is. jerry just seems like a bitter human being i know magic isn't happy with his portrayal
yeah, did west really actively hate his mvp trophy to the point of using it as a rage prop on multiple occasions? seemed over the top as a means to develop the character (like, one mvp trophy smash might have done it).
What an awesome first episode. We will discuss some the show tonight after the Spurs game on the podcast. John C. Reilly is awesome. Whomever did the casting for this, wow. Magic and his dad, I mean almost exact matches. The guy playing Norm Nixon is Norm's son in real life. Jerry West hating his 69 MVP trophy has to be real. Throwing it out the window might just be the show exaggerating but Jerry is nuts, it's just turned up for entertainment purposes. I think?
my only complaint is that they make it seem like jerry never won a ring. but i guess they just chose to focus on all the losses to boston to set up for the 80s rivalry i've heard jack kent cooke was an a-hole so seems like they got his portrayal right. and cap too with telling the kid to F off. i've heard that's how he really was
Yeah love the Airplane role included in this one, and his abhorrence for signing things and being stand offish was well known
I recall an interview with West for one of those docs about the Lakers/C Bags rivalry where he said receiving that trophy was the absolute low point for him. He felt like he just couldn't take it any more. So even if he didn't really break it or throw it through windows every time he was upset, it's certainly the perfect symbol for the tragedy of his career and a great sight gag for his rage.
but west did end up getting a ring in 72. i don't think dirk nowitzki is still kicking exercise bikes or whatever.
