Don't mention that name! @JSM might hear you! Harris is still an interesting prospect, but I worry we'd be way too young at that point. Mitch said we're "definitely" going to target veterans in FA this season... I'm thinking after the bigger names Carroll and Green are the ones that make the most sense with that statement...
According to this article at 1 + 1 deal is not possible with RFA's. "...a restricted free agent must sign an offer sheet for at least two years (not counting option years)..." http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports....nterested-in-signing-offer-sheet-with-lakers/
Yeah I saw this one, that's why the contract they're throwing around is actually 2+1 for Butler. My bad on that one. I knew it was too good to be true that there was a loophole in the RFA process! Butler's best bet would be signing a 2+1 deal where he becomes a FA in the summer of 2017... At that point we might be looking in another direction already. So Butler's best bet to be a Laker then is taking the QO like Monroe... Spoiler: Hmmmmm....
ah, makes sense... still, pincus claimed 4 years, when it's really 2 (i was thinking maybe even 1 prior to seeing that qualifier on the rule).
If I'm him, with a coaching change coming, sounding like they are jettisoning proven vets, and if I'm not sure I want to be second fiddle to a guy who dribbles too much and not sure can stay healthy, signing a one year deal to have all of the options I want in a year is very possible.
That leaves Love, who will probably opt out, and possibly seek employment elsewhere, taking the decision out of the Cavs’ hands. If he re-signs he might go for a 1+1 deal to become a free agent again in 2016. If he does, then that takes a lot of the risk out of the decision — they could give it one more shot to see if it works and see if he stays healthy. But if he wants a long-term deal, the Cavs have to be thinking about the fit, about his injuries, about how they played better when he was out, and about the fact that they got to the Finals without him. Also, with so much money on the payroll (re-signing their FAs, Irving’s extension kicking in, and what will likely be dead money going to Varejao), they may not be able to afford him. http://www.basketballinsiders.com/chat/nba-chat-with-larry-coon-6182015/ From Larry Coon on Love's situation. His chat he has is interesting. I'd recommend it. The link is usually through his Twitter
Reports I read say the Cavs are prepared to offer Love a full max deal. I'd have to search for the link. Probably Hoopshype.
That's what I heard Windhorst say as well. You know honestly I don't know what the hell is going on in Cleveland. I guess it's up to GM Lebron on what to do with Love...
Yeah if I'm them I bite the bullet and let him walk or come back for less than max... They have to pay Thompson AND Movgov. They've already got an injury prone PF under contract in Varejao. Sure you look like colossal morons moving Wiggins for nothing but better looking dumb than attaching another 20 million to an injury prone dude.
I'm normally against heaping upon sunk costs, but I think the cavs have to double down here. the finals showed they need more firepower on offense to get the job done. love can do that. if he wants full max, I'd give it. if he wants 1+1, I'd do that, too. anything not to lose an asset during a title window.
Or does he become less likely to have injuries if he doesn't have to be "The Guy" handling the load all the time? Something to consider. Nice to have players that have an extra gear come playoff time when you need it. ala Iguadala
Well he got hurt this season on the same team. I'm not sure much would change on the injury front with him.
Played 75 games, and then a guy yanked his arm out of socket in the playoffs. He's white. That's pretty good! (77 games last year too)
I don't think so. You HAVE to sign that guy if you're Cleveland. Let him split time with Thompson for about 30 games and then ship him out for some cheap assets or draft picks. As long as Love doesn't get hurt in the first half of next season, you will be able to get a lot in a trade for him. It's the only way they can get SOMETHING for Wiggins. I'm sure there will be a team willing to offer up a huge expiring and a couple draft picks, or maybe a promising rookie along with a medium sized expiring. For example, what if Portland keeps Aldridge and Afflalo and they are floating around the sixth seed. Maybe they get a promising rookie at 23. They trade Batum's expiring and maybe their rookie and a first rounder to grab Love to put next to Aldridge and Lillard. Your "accumulate assets" stance for us is important for a team like the Cavs too when you consider they will be capped out even after the cap raises if they have Lebron, Kyrie, and Thompson maxed out with all the other role players. Shumpert is going to get a pretty nice deal and I do think he is somewhat important for them. Mozgov will need to be resigned the same year the cap spikes. They will need some cheap productive players because all their key contributors are up for new contracts. Side Show Bob is at about 10 million for another 3 seasons too. Signing Love then trading him for some cheap assets may be vital for them to stick around at the top. Lebron is going to slow down a little soon as he approaches his mid 30s. It can't be 90% LBJ and Kyrie with Thompson as their only other real NBA player.
Hm... it's a good point. I just wonder if they'll really be able to move Love after they sign him. Maybe instead they just sign and trade him somewhere for some assets? Or maybe you can re-sign him and then trade him to Brooklyn for Joe Johnson?
Yeah. Something like that. Lebron will sign like a 30 million dollar contract the year that cap explodes. Kyrie and Thompson will be making 40 between them. Side show Bob is ten. Mozgov will get 10...those 5 right there puts them at or maybe over the new cap. And to be honest, that's not a title contender in a couple years with Father Time catching up with LBJ. They will need cheap assets to fill that thing out. I mean, if not, Gilbert may be paying a 100 million dollar tax bill. Haha.
