It is a huge gamble, and I wouldn't agree with it. It is just the idea that Mitch might think he will be able to get a top big, thus going with Russell would make more sense.

Screw Towns. He's out here in L.A. doing his one-on-none video workouts and doesn't have time at the outset for Mitch Kupchack of the Los Angeles Lakers?? Seems to "me" going #1 is most important to him, with its extra money and prestige. Give me Okafor who "wants" to be here and has unique skills down low which are a lost Big Man art in the NBA today. Not to mention the usual ..... [IMG]

Here's a ranking list from Scott Howard-Cooper who works for NBA.com. It breaks down the best players by position according to feedback from front offices around the league. Nothing really new here, but it's good to know we're on the same track as most front offices.

    Too lazy to click:

    PG- 1. Russell 2. Mudiay 3. Payne 4. Grant 5. Wright 6. T. Jones
    SG- 1. Hezonja 2. Booker 3. Hunter 4. Vaughn 5. Powell 6. Frazier
    SF- 1. Winslow 2. Johnson 3. Oubre 4. Dekker 5. Hollis-Jefferson 6. Anderson
    PF- 1. Porzingis 2. Turner 3. Kaminsky 4. Lyles 5. Harrell 6. Looney 7. Portis 8. Martin 9. Wood 10. McCollough
    C- 1. Towns 2. Okafor 3. Cauley-Stein 4. Upshaw 5. D. Johnson 6. Hernangomez

    Isn't Towns more of a PF than a C ?

To start out I think he is, but eventually he's got to be considered a Center.

@JSM that's both interesting and confusing... We've worked out like 60 guys in that range and below. You'd think they found someone they like at that spot.

I'm alright with it though. I think they're eyeing a pick closer to the high-mid 20s range and if they can't get to it, they'll dump the pick for other assets.

"The L.A. Lakers are holding on to the 27th selection and they too are looking to move out of the $963,000 in guaranteed salary associated with it. There is a belief that if the Lakers cannot move up and grab a significant player in the mid-teens, they’d rather move out of that pick altogether.

Rasberry sound. "Smoke". Come on Jesse and Ryan and Mitch..... you've done your due diligence all year..... pick a "winner" for us if you can't leverage it into a trade. At this point in the history of the Lakers and where we have been the last 3 years, $963,000 is chump change.

That $963,000 can come back and haunt you in free agency though.

If we can't move up, another option would be to move down. Get either a 2nd this year and next year or a 2nd this year + cash. That way we can essential audition two 2nd round guys. If one or both don't pan out, it's not guaranteed.

That's pretty much what I figure they'll do. That's why half the guys we've had in here are probably going in the 40s or 50s.

Yeah my guess is that translates to: we are keeping our options open. If we hear rumblings from a key agent that makes that money necessary for a certain FA signing then we dump that pick. If we can package the 27 + 34 to move up for the right guy we do. It's also a signal to other GMs to let them know we are open for business if a team wants someone with that 27th pick. In other words, Mitch is working multiple angles. Nothing new here.

It will really come down to who is there at 27 in my opinion. If someone like Hollis-Jefferson, Anderson, etc manages to slip then I think we keep the pick and take them. If not and we can't move up, then we will probably move the pick.

I just can't get myself too worked up on any of the rumors going around. I've said it several times and I will say it again, I think things are going to go pretty straightforward with the Towns, Okafor, and Russell being picked in that order.

I think the Knicks are legitimately torn on who they will pick. It's not sounding like they are sold on Mudiay and I think they are the team that is most likely to do some kind of trade.

Is it just me or has anybody missed Jerry Buss during this process? Sigh. :(.

Definitely. It would definitely make it easier for me to accept us picking someone other than Okafor.

Exactly. Okafor is the prospect I want because he wants to be here, an the proposer I have the least questions about.

If Russell had the same rhetoric during his interviews, I'd probably favor him. But, you're right, I'd feel much, much, more confident if Jerry were on board with that decision.

Either way, we'll see how it goes...

Honestly, no. Dr. Buss pretty much stayed in the background of the draft situation except for the first big one with Magic. He let Jerry West, and then Mitch handle their business. Where I miss him beyond measure is in free agency. I'm just not sure a meeting with Jeannie or Jimmy would seal the deal like a meeting with the legendary Dr. Buss would.

Why? Do you really see the same "potential" dominance from him at his position as Okafor "potentially" has at his as being equivalent in impact from a needed franchise type player for the Lakers?
