Hate to say it, but it looks like he takes a long time to get into his shot. It looks to be about a half second too slow. You can easily get away with that in college, but he'll get contested on every three at that speed. Also, lots of layups where he can dunk. Guy obviously can't jump.
And all of them could play for the South Bay Lakers next year. Clearly we would like to develop another AC or THT.
Sam Vecenie at The Athletic has our two guys ranked 1st and 5th out of the undrafted pool And here's what Hollinger had to say in his piece with The Athletic
Wait. So Reaves was actually a low first/high second, but when he dropped out of the first round, he pulled himself from the draft so he could choose where to go? Am I reading that correctly?
sounds like there must be some discussions with agents during the draft about whether guys would prefer to be drafted or not? makes sense. tbh, second round isn't great because you don't get the guaranteed cash (or less of it), and your rights get controlled. even if you go overseas, you're still obligated to the team that drafted you if you want to come to the nba later. and you're handcuffed a bit if you find yourself behind folks on that squad developmentally or whatever. sounds like the scouts want to say reaves is like ingles (they don't say it, but that's the implied archetype). i didn't see the iq in the highlight reels, but then again, those focus on the scoring. he definitely will not be able to get a step on nba defenses, but maybe he won't have to--ingles can't and does ok. be delighted to be wrong, and there's a decent chance of it given our scouting track record.
I'm honestly surprised that doesn't happen more often. If it did, I bet Silver would put a rule against it. I suppose there is some risk of being labeled as difficult around the league or if you're trying to land on a particular team and Player X who is supposed to get drafted in the 2nd and they end to going undrafted, maybe they take your spot. BUT if it works, it's a much better situation. Money isn't guaranteed either way and if you can land on a team who does well developing their two way players. Get more exposure and a chance at a ring as a rookie on a team that's thin where you're likely to stick. Way to go Rob! No sense of spending money buying 2nd round picks when you're convincing your targets to drop out of the draft.
i agree; it makes you wonder why we don't hear about this more. once round 1 is over, all the top guys just drop out and pick their teams like FA. my guess is the withdrawal is informal, so a team could still draft a guy if they wanted. but in the second round, it's not as important to teams to get a specific player. but imagine if gilbert arenas or carlos boozer (well-known players at the time who inexplicably slipped into the second round) had been like: don't draft me, i'm joining the shaq/kobe lakers...
This kid is just 6’2.5” but is a hell of an athlete. Check out his stats at the G League Elite Camp. First in standing and running vert and 1st in 3/4 court sprint. https://gleague.nba.com/news/2021-nba-g-league-elite-camp-player-measurement-results/
seems like he's kind of a sideshow act (isn't much of a shooter, not a real high hoop iq), but he's quite an athlete. some of those in-game dunks (even against pretty lame competition) were very impressive.
At the risk of being called a Mac groupie .... and shout out to those late night Ginsu Knives commercials, "But wait there's MORE". This video covers his record breaking HS career and state championship and mentality. Tough SOB. Had to stop like a minute in and haven't even gotten to the "he comes from originally a football background". Check the Boing Vert slow mo stuff early on. #returnofthescoutingdepartment 11 minutes in, had to jump out again. Must see. Mamba Mentality. Love this kid. Tough as nails. Broke Iverson's state HS scoring record.
Copy that, I am. His game is fun, like Iverson's was fun. Small guy that's fearless who can jump out of the gym and has Kobe's mentality. He'll outwork you and come looiking for you. He has those ferocious block moments too like Lonzo had high in the air.
As mentioned, don't know about compared to actual draft combine times (would have to look up) but he was the fastest player in the 3/4 court sprint at the G league combine in addition to smoking the field in the standing and running vert.
our SL squad looking nice, obviously just highlights but all the guys we picked up look nice but for sure this Mac kid stands out the most in terms of flair n bravado for the gm
