I don’t see how you guys can let Stern off the hook. He’s the one who went against his word not to interfere with the NO front office and their trades. He’s the one who stopped it for “basketball reasons.” At the behest of the other owners? Of course. But he’s the one who shut it down. They are all complicit in that hatchet job.

I thought they played each other pretty well on both sides. But that period only lasted a couple of years, Walton was too fragile and Kareem was a work horse. I followed them both from their starts. To me, Walton had about 6 dominant years, including college vs Kareem who had about 15-20 dominant years including college. If you actually look at the stats, Walton rarely got the better of Kareem. That being said, Jokic would have gotten destroyed by either.

Because from what Jeanie said, it really did look shady if you were an owner of another team and didn't even think you had an opportunity to even try to trade for CP3 before he was traded to the Lakers. The situation for how it went down and Demps pulling the trigger with not even any contact with other teams did have weird optics.

not letting him off the hook exactly, but after hearing what jeanie said it becomes more clear why he did it. it wasn't like the trade happened and he automatically vetoed it because he personally thought it was unfair to the rest of the league

the whining owners/GMs aside, demps bears far more responsibility for what happened than stern does. all he had to do was wait

I would believe the story... if it wasn't for NO getting AD. This was all Stern's plan and doing from the start. Shady AF.

i think weirder optics is directly interfering with the trade of a superstar in his prime. really made the sport start to look like pro wrestling in that they were actively managing the narrative. they plunged the lakers into the cellar for a decade and ruined the remainder of kobe's prime and netted nothing for NO or even the clippers. just a tremendously stupid move on top of the motives being suspect.

they only got away with it because so many fans (and opposing ownership groups) hate the lakers. had it been anyone else, it would have been roundly rejected and stern probably would have lost his job immediately upon suggesting it.

yeah, i think once the trade was vetoed that stern for sure had a say in which offer NO accepted

remember, with the lakers offer NO was going to acquire kevin martin, luis scola, lamar, and dragic. that's a pretty good return and it would've kept the hornets from the basement.....which is what stern wanted. in taking the clippers offer, he made sure the hornets would be awful and have a good chance at getting the #1 pick and landing a new face of the franchise in AD. now which team is more attractive to a new buyer? the team that's not good enough to make the playoffs or make it out of the first round? or the team that just drafted #1 overall and landed a big name prospect to build around?

The thing that isn’t talked about enough is why Demps felt like he had the control to make that trade in the first place. It was because Stern told NO he would stay out of their business and he didn’t.

    exactly

until stern had every other owner and GM crying to him about how unfair it was. of course he wasn't going to say F off to the rest of the league and side with the lakers. now if it was any other team (aside from miami probably,) i highly doubt all those owners and GMs would've thrown a fit about it

The best prospect since Lebron James is available at #1 and you tank your team and against the odds land the #1 pick. I have little doubt that the AD draft was rigged. Stern basically wanted to sell AD to a new owner, not the Hornets.

Demps wasn't supposed to be conducting business while the season was postponed because of a lock-out. Stern also had to be fair to the other owners who were complaining that they weren't able to conduct deals so why was New Orleans able to. It wasn't about Stern wanting to block the trade as much as it was Stern trying to make sure New Orleans weren't playing by a different set of rules. Imagine if the Lakers had a better offer up on the table but Demps went and traded CP3 to a team without the rest of the league knowing. I'd be pissed. You have to be objective here. Demps is just an idiot which is why he sucks at being an executive and why New Orleans got rid of him after that AD debacle. Jeanie is already on record stating that if Demps had waited and just given the rest of the league notice before formally accepting the Lakers offer, CP3 would have been a Lakers.

yeah...no. just not accurate. nobody complained about not being able to deal. they complained they didn't get to make their offer, i guess. but that happens on like, 80% of trades. shopping guys all over the league tends to decrease, not increase value (see gasol, pau).

demps was empowered to make deals.
he made a deal (a better one than the one he ended up being forced to make).
stern vetoed it in unprecedented (and never repeated, btw) fashion.

only lakers haters at the time could mount any sensible defense, and most of them have abandoned it since, because it is and was ridiculous.

You have a strange reading and brain comprehension problem. Not accurate? So Jeanie's statement isn't accurate? It's literally what she stated in the video. I guess you must be a secret Lakers owner or a secret child of Dr. Buss. You're not supposed to be making deals or trades, Dell Demps made it, and because Stern is the 'owner' he was put in a position where the rest of the teams thought Stern was abusing his power. It's common sense but you just like replying for the sake of it so go ahead and do you.

Speaking of comprehension, you clearly still don't understand the site rules even though they have been pointed out to you. Personal insults are not an acceptable way of making your point here. You can figure out a way to make your point without going there.

so you (and jeannie) are arguing there was an official moratorium on all trades? that would have been news to...everyone?

the lakers (and jeannie) have played nice (both then and now), probably because it's bad for business not to. but nothing i stated above wasn't a fact. and there wasn't anything barring trades, else it wouldn't have been negotiated and submitted to the league office.

there were, however, public statements from stern about non-interference in NO's business when owners expressed concern about the league's ham-handed conservatorship. it turned out about as bad as could be expected.

unless you were, say, maybe...a cavs fan at the time.

Westbrook is putting up video game stats right now vs Indy. Considering how horribly that WAS team was hit by Covid and how crap that team is outside of Beal and Bertans, they're almost at the 8th seed right now

I hope they get in and somehow play the Nets round 1. The amount of hate Westbrook would channel into that one series would be off the charts.
