I think @trodgers at this point is just using us to fish for class topics.

Oh, I don't need to fish for topics!

Most of my good philosophy friends are theists, Christians in particular, and most of them either attended a Christian university for undergrad or teach Biblical Studies courses for their local churches. They never fail to answer my well-intentioned questions :)

    @TIME @Kingsama Is Corinthians 14:34-35 sexist?

34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.

35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

If it isn't sexist, why not? If it is sexist, then why is it morally okay to believe in this?

I'll be glad to respond, but I'll need the same thing from you I asked trodgers on the last page.

Define sexism? Putting the two sexes into a hierarchy (patriarchy) where it is discriminatory and unfair to women. Or, giving men the upper hand. Or, discounting women's intellectual importance. You can speak on all of those points, or just the first one (first one seems like the best definition).

Ok, let's give an opportunity to trodgers, Barnstable and anyone else that wants to chime in to either sign off on your definition of sexism, or modify it before I tackle an answer. I've learned on hot button issues to be clear on what we are actually discussing before launching in only to discover we were discussing two different issues.

Also, no one (including you) has responded yet to my first two answering posts last page, so before we boldly go where angels fear to tread, let's give time for responses.

That's a good example of sexism, and if the Bible violates that consideration, I'd consider it sexist.

BTW, I use "discriminatory" in a neutral sense, but he says discriminatory AND unfair - so I'm okay with that. The third one is another good one, but I don't know that Corinthians does that, by the way.

Yeah, I'm going to try to not nitpick in my response. Seems like a reasonable definition to work with.

No, but it exists almost nowhere on the planet in the past 5000 years. We have some evidence that there used to be far more matriarchal societies.
I also think that sex and gender binarism is sexist (and/or genderist).

Just... explain whether either of you (@TIME , @Kingsama or anyone else) think that the bible treats women worse than men or not. Please :)

Oh I will gladly share my thoughts, but to do so adequately requires a bit of time. You are basically asking us to cover a several thousand page collection of documents, that was written over a large expanse of time to a group of folks that seem to be unfamilar with its contents, concepts, cultures, and so forth. I work 12.5 hour shifys at work, so between that, family, and preparing for our home church meetingnn sundays not a lot of free time until Sunday evenings and monday-Wednesday. I have a framework in my head, i just need time to write it out and source it.

You can surely answer the question as you wish, but I'll make a suggestion.
Just discuss the letter to Corinthians.
I confess I have no idea how authoritatively people take Paul's writing to be, but it's either authoritative or not. If it's not, why not? If it is, why? - and then the Corinthians question. That's a good context, I think, because you can say all kinds of awesome stuff about people, but if you also say awful stuff and it's a point of doctrine or a point of orthodox practice, then it's still sexist.
