Well that's the thing: with FA and the draft this summer we SHOULD come away with a solid starting five. We should at the very least pick-up a starting level SF this summer. A starting level SF like Draymond Green, Tobias Harris, DeMarre Carroll, or Danny Green with Nick Young backing up is actually a good rotation.

Iggy has accomplished more than Nick.

With how young this team is and the fact that we shouldn't expect to make the playoffs next year (unless we trade the pick for Boogie or something...even then), if we were to draft Anderson, I'd start him over Swaggy. Nick does not have a starter's mentality, and with Kobe back, Towns/Okafor, Randle and Clarkson, we should have scoring on the starting unit.

The more I think about it, the less I want to start that many young guys. Clarkson, Randle, AND the #2 pick is already a lot of young cats... I'd rather start just a couple young guys and have a couple veterans to balance things out.

I still want to see Swaggy come off the bench. I want a real starting SF.

^^^. Unfortunately, almost all of the good Free Agent SFs are Restricted.. Except Carroll.

I think we'll definitely see Kobe play more minutes at the 3 just due to the fact that he's slowing down a bit & is becoming more of a perimeter guy anyways.

I'd shop him heavily. Last year, he rubbed me the wrong way. Does he deserve a 2nd chance? Maybe. I still wouldn't bother, though. Move him if the right deal comes along...

I'm not against shopping around to see his value, but I do think Nick could still be a great asset to us as long as the team is winning. He has yet to really play in a Lakers jersey when we have been in an upswing/upward projectory.

What y'all think about him backing up a rookie SF? I can't help but want to grab one in the Draft as well. I don't mind to see what we have going into the following year. If the rookie was placed in a position to succeed and make things simple for him which isn't much if you think about it, play D and space the floor.

Outside of gasoline and Lma, I'm not crazy about overpaying for anyone. Let's see if we can nail back to back drafts before we go all in just yet.

I think Young fits on this team. but only if the last season is a learning experience for him. He should know in his mind that he is not a star. and that he needs to work hard. If that's gonna happen, I think he is perfect for the 6th man role. if JR smith could do it in cleveland, so does he.

We're spending our money anyway this summer. There's no getting around that. Next summer the cap blows up and even a 20 million dollar contract looks alright.

A contract worth 20 million this summer is going to be worth about 26 million in the next summer because the cap will go from about 67.4 million to somewhere around 87 million.

So it doesn't really matter how we spend our money this summer, we just have to do it. I don't mind spending too much on a guy if we really like him. My favorite is DeMarre Carroll who won't cost more than AT MOST 13 million this summer. When the cap jumps up, that 13 million looks like a bargain. DeMarre brings a three point shot, good perimeter defense, and he's got that fire in him. I'd love him as our big pick up of the summer.

Then fill in the bench with the 8 million or so that we've got left. If we could turn that 7 million into something like Ed Davis and Mo Williams, we just had solid off-season.

I definitely see where you're coming from and have kept that in mind. All I know is I want Clark and rankle to start, while not minding if we draft a rookie SF to start too. The young fantastic four with Kobe being the leader and godfather. We sign solid fillers to complete rest of team, then we go all in for Durant while still having cap space for another max he wants to recruit, Kobe takes a one year friendly deal to try and get #6.

I hear ya, we're all just thinking out loud here. I've said it a bunch but my favorite idea right now:

    Clarkson/Mo Williams/Price
    Bryant/Ellington
    Carroll/Young
    Randle/Black/Kelly
    Okafor/Davis

That team's average age: 26.58 years old. That's including Kobe! Without Kobe and Price it drops to only 25.2 years old. Really young core that will age well and be together a long time.

The next summer you've got some ridiculous amount like 70 million to spend. Go get Durant and maybe fill in the roster with another couple of veterans if you'd like. Even without Durant I think that team has a GREAT future ahead of it.

I'm down with your plan real. Before Carroll had his scare, he was constantly envisioned as our new SF. After he played on one leg against Lebrun, it tainted my thoughts of him previously.

Could actually be blessing in disguise and can lure him at a cheaper price.

You think he can hold his own against Barnes/Iggy/Kawhi? I think he can.

He'll defend them to the best of his ability I know that for sure. Carroll knows where his game is and he knows what his role is. He's a hard worker and a good locker room guy. He'll make anybody work hard for a shot and that's what I'm looking for from a role player.

I'm thinking 13 million tops would get it done, but yes.

I'm almost certain we don't get any of the bigger fish. We need to put our money somewhere, there's no point in saving it. Just like Dallas did with Monta, we're going to have to overpay a bit for a guy this summer. That's the way I see it. We need to put our money somewhere, it might as well be in a guy who fills a few needs and fits well.

When the cap goes up, the contract won't look nearly so bad. Not to mention no matter what we do this season we'll have just about two max contracts next summer to hand out.
