Rose is great but it's difficult to imagine him getting any significant minutes on a championship contender. His inability to shoot the ball as a point guard wouldn't fit the Lakers.

after schroder, there's no need for rose. and he probably cost what detroit would be asking, too, which is wild.

Unfortunately I don’t know how we could pull this off. We’d have to cut Cook in order to sign him right now, or use the only buyout spot we’d have on him later in the season via pro-rated veterans minimum (or, if we cut Cook by late February, Pau could be one of two buyout signings).

Would be a great story, but probably not the best move in terms of roster construction.

Roster’s pretty damn deep already. Maybe we don’t need to save spot for “unknown” buy out possibility, and another “skilled” Big for 5-6 minutes a game seems a priority anyway?

I respect Pau for what he did and he will always be one of the most loved Lakers of all time. With that being said, I just don't know why this is even a topic. What reasoning would there be to sign Pau other than for sympathetic purposes?

Very true, and it may very well end up that there is no impact players on the buyout market that actually would want to sign with us for our 15th spot. We’ll have to see how things play out around that time.

Does anyone have more details on McKinnie’s contract situation. Is he fully guaranteed right now? Or does he have a partial guarantee that we could potentially cut to fit in an extra player?

Well I wouldn’t want it from a sympathetic “I feel bad for Pau” perspective. TBH, it’s more of a selfish “that would be a feel good story for me to enjoy” perspective.

But you’re right, from a basketball perspective it wouldn’t make much sense. If we really wanted more center depth, there our even now still better options out there.

We are talking end of the bench player kind of minutes here. If he feels he can still produce here and there for 5 minutes, what are we risking exactly? We'd have to rely more heavily on him only in case of serious injuries to more than one of the main frontcourt guys, and if that happens, we're in trouble either way. What other serviceable bigs are available?

Him joining the team midseason and helping us to No. 18 would be amazing, I hope the Lakers take this (IMO slight) risk.

If there was ever a season we need some bodies to play huge minutes and be productive from the end of the bench it is this year. IF we had 3 or 4 more spots open I would be ok with Pau on board. We have one? Barely 2? I would hope Lakers wait on buyout players for that (Ariza)

Do you think we would even remotely consider Pau if he had never played for the Lakers? It's just for sentimental reasons to sign him. The Lakers are better suited to wait for the buyout market to cover other positions if by the mid-season deadline, Montrezl and Marc are healthy. Once the playoffs come along, AD will likely eat up some center minutes and so can Markieff. The need for a center is mainly for the regular season. I would much rather the Lakers pursue another wing player who can shoot. The last time Pau played, he looked horrible and it was very clear that he had nothing left in him. Two years later and we're supposed to act like this guy can be serviceable? C'mon. The only reason to sign Pau is purely to make a good story. If there are no options by the midseason deadline and the Lakers are steamrolling teams, I'm fine with Pau. I'm just not liking how people want Pau signed when he doesn't really help the team.

I have a hard time believing he can't give us two or three 3 minutes bursts per game for 2/3 of the games. 6-9 minutes for roughly 50 games?

The issue at this point with the roster is bodies who are willing to Dudley it. Sit 4...5...6 games, play for less then 10 minutes and then disappear for another handful of games. I don't see a lot of those on the market.

I'm down for him getting that spot when we're able to expand the roster.

Weren’t there some reports about how the Bucks front office mishandled some salary cap stuff this off-season?

With us no longer an option, I’d rather have Giannis stay in Milwaukee than have him team up with Luka or go to Miami.

I get that our main guys got little rest, but considering how deep this team is and how young most of the main guys still are, I disagree. If anything, Vogel may have a hard time finding enough minutes for everybody who wants to show what they have and actually has the talent to play big minutes. I seriously don't rember a Lakers team this deep.

I don't understand the hang up at all. If Pau wants to come finish his career here with his brother, and is willing to take peanuts and play for a few minutes a game (if that), we should absolutely accommodate him. He's earned it. How can we claim we don't have any roster spots to give away for sentimental purposes when we have Dudley and Cook on the books? We're seriously going to tell Pau to go pound sand ("Pau'nd sand?") because we need to keep Kostas Antetokounmpo on the books for the remote chance that it'll matter to his brother who, in all likelihood, has no intention of taking a pay cut to sign with us? I would be so happy to have Pau on our bench, traveling with the team this year. Make it happen.

Kostas is a two way player so doesn’t affect our hard cap or roster spots.

Think of how clutch it was for us to be able to bring in Markieff last February. The argument against signing Pau is that it would in all likelihood prevent us from potentially making a similar move this year.

I’m going back and forth on the idea, I think we’ll really just have to wait and see how the buyout market and our roster needs pan out.

But yeah, the other argument FOR bringing him in is quite simply because he wants it. He’s a Laker legend that we mistreated on his way out. He also likely has large influence in international basketball circles. Fully making amends by giving him a contract and allowing him to retire with us is a good thing. We want the world to know that if you do right by the Lakers franchise, they will do right by you.

Plus he's wanting to work for a team when he's done. Bringing him back would give us in inside track on that as well. I don't think he'd be interested in being a full time international scout (away from family too much), but he could definitely use utilize his international relationships. Or he might want to use that basketball IQ as a player development coach, which would also be a nice long term fit.

Once again, I'm all for bringing Pau back. I don't think we can until later but he seems like he's still recovering anyway. If he's not in a huge hurry to sign somewhere just to sign, it would be great if everyone is patient and we make this happen when it can. Right now we're capped out. But hopefully later on, Pau will be back.
