Well I’m more referring to the idea that Lebron would take the minimum to build a super team. I’m not sure if I’ve seen that floated here, but I have elsewhere on the internet, and the sentiment that Lebron is already super wealthy and doesn’t need a max might lead to the idea that he should take a minimum.

Taking a drastic paycut like that wouldn’t make sense. Taking an incremental paycut like Dirk to give your team a bit more cap flexibility is a bit different and wouldn’t draw as much backlash.

But Lebron and Dirk are in different positions, and at the end of the day nobody should have been expecting or calling for Lebron to take a paycut. If the Finals MVP wants to add a few more years to his max contract, you happily give him that max extension.

I don’t follow. How does the fact that Lebron will one day be a billionaire conflict with him trying to maximize his earnings as a player?

I don’t think Lebron wants to get maximum money in some effort to spite the owners because he views them as slave owners... I think he’s just a human who wants to earn the most generational wealth for himself and his family as possible.

Interestingly found this tidbit in an article from 2014 when looking up info about Dirk’s contract situation.

I think it still holds true. Lebron probably has been underpaid. He likely has generated significantly more value for the NBA and the owners then he himself has earned through his salary as a player.

It doesn't except for the fact that they think the owners are greedy without recognising they are greedy as well. Plus Bron and his NBA buddies want to look like civil rights heroes standing up for Black Lives Matter, but to them, Hong Kong Lives Don't Matter and Chinese Child Labour Rights Don't Matter because Nike and China pay the bills.

NBA salary cap exists to help everyone else who aren't max contract-type players and to help smaller franchise teams who don't have the money to compete against big city teams. I am fairly confident that LeBron's real worth, without a salary cap, would be upwards of $100 million per year.

yeah, the issue is when in their career and how much less? dirk took his paycut three or four years after they won the title, in his 17th year, and not being in nearly the position lebron is right now. dirk also got 25 per two years after that to help make up the losses for the two years of cuts to help the team.

dirk's also a really unique person among professional athletes and an exception that proves lots of rules, imo.

if lebron opted out, every team would pay him max. and so should we. for as long as he wants, basically. i wasn't mad at kobe, either.

Well nothing is stopping you from going to China and campaigning for them. And the idea that you can sit here and tell NBA players what issues they should care about is so insanely arrogant it defies description.

I wasn’t talking about the minimum but as the tweet shows above, we are paying Lebron the most money by far per year in what is the later career years. Most everyone seems ok with that. You pay Kobe that kind of money because you had him the years he was underpaid also. LeBron did bring the shine back to the franchise and I’m not sure if you can put a price on that. Bron was certainly worth more then his salary this year and may very well be next year too. It’s just the year after that that everyone seems so excited about him signing on for. I’m not that excited about paying him that when he’s 38. It’s the old 80/20 rule. 20% of the player deserve 80% of the salary. The trouble with that is the 80% of the players would never agree to that. All super star players are worth more then you can pay them at first, when their in their late 30’s...maybe not.

That is not my point. Today's NBA players want to be seen as heroes for civil rights, and up there with Muhammed Ali, yet they've been proven to only go so far as what does not hurt their wallets. That means they are not heroes for civil rights, but are just after good PR when it doesn't hurt their investments.

Michael Jordan believed Republicans bought sneakers too, so kept quiet. Today, most NBA players will say whatever they want about Trump/BLM because it is popular to do so, but they won't dare to hurt their investments in China because the Chinese buy sneakers too (and make them in factories for slave labour rates).

LeBron might be one of my favourite players to grace a basketball court, but he is not a civil rights hero. He is a capitalist, and not that there is anything wrong with it, but don't pretend you are this great guy for change when you don't suffer any persecution/ financial damange for speaking up.

    I'll put it simple.....

If you are screaming that oppression of A PEOPLE is bad and then not do the same for A PEOPLE being oppressed and support a regime that allows that oppression somewhere else, you look like a 2-face.

I think it is 'I can stand up for this group and not lose any/ much money and look like a hero of social change, but I won't stand up for other groups as it will hurt my investments (and Uncle Phil Knight wouldn't like it)'.

Why on earth would ANYONE take on Wall When he will make $47m in 22-23. Is a first rounder really that valuable to Houston?

    Harden is next.
