I’d think about this one long and hard and probably do it.

    Are we though?

Has the contract really been released, or has everyone assumed the BAE has already triggered because the amount Mathews is getting is equal to the BAE? Is the BAE triggered when signing the contract by declaring "I am using the BAE on this player", or is it triggered after the fact if other criteria for salary across the team is reached?

All I'm saying is I think the reason some people are saying we are hard capped and others aren't is because we don't know the details of a lot of this yet, and ROB is smart as hell in how he's playing all these contracts.

Well the only way we can give Matthews $3.6 million or Harrel $9 million is through the BAE or MLE. We don't have the cap room to give them that type of salary without using the exceptions.

I actually haven't heard anyone say we're NOT going to be hard capped. I usually trust Pincus the most on this CBA stuff and he's been talking like the hard cap is a foregone conclusion.

This makes sense to me if we’re going to sign both Gasol and Kieff. No issue with that whatsoever.

Gasol is a perfect fit for this team. He can play more mins than McGee and provides very good defense and length.

He's a very high insurance to pay if we go through Denver or Philly to repeating.

A little concerned that he's turning 36 soon but hopefully we can load manage him

I was looking for some Toronto fans opinions and this seems to be the consensus:

Gasol is "washed up" offensively and will give you the same output (on average) as Dwight, but he does it very differently. He's not a lob threat, but will score on putbacks and stretch the floor by taking threes. He will happily take 3-4 threes a game and hit 1 or 2 on a regular basis. Defensively, however, he's still very good. They think he's the highest IQ big in the game and should be mostly used when you have to go big to try to neutralize Embiid, Vucevic and Jokic. He played Embiid so well at one point, and held him to 0 (!) points. Basically, if you need a big who can shoot, pass some and use him for specific matchups, he's still your guy. Don't expect offensive production anymore.

Having a center who can space the floor and another who can dominate in the paint should be every team's goal. Lakers will have that if they can find a way to move Javale, I guess. In the playoffs, we're set with AD if we have to play him so it's not too much of a concern for me. I'd love to see the Lakers get another SF who can cover for LeBron so maybe Batum can squeak a role there. I'm not expecting much from Marc other than he can space the floor. Anything else he gives is just extra at this point. I just remembered that Cousins is unlikely to be ready when the season starts so his injury concerns might be more problematic than originally suggested. If we can get Markieff, Marc Gasol, and Batum, I think the Lakers are set.

Not gonna lie to you guys, I want Whiteside. For as stupid as some of you claim he is, he's still an elite defender with good athleticism. No one is more stupid than Dwight right now. Javale used to be a straight up dumbazz too. Now they're both champions who straightened up under this organization, coaching, and locker room. If we get Marc, we really should look at bringing him in too.

No I’m not saying we’re not going to be hard capped. I’m saying the order of operations in signing these contracts might mean that we haven’t triggered the financial limitations of the hard cap yet, and that there’s still a chance we make trades and sign AD and Harrell in such a way that we avoid it, but it’s a stretch. Like I doubt AD takes less money so that we’re not hard capped, but who knows. Rob is a wizard and the FO doesn’t release much info on these contracts until it’s all 100% worked out.

That’s part of the reason those idiots thought Rob didn’t understand the cap when getting AD. In fact he understood the cap so well that they didn’t see what he was planning coming.

Remember when we drafted Ball instead of him? Good times.

(I still think Ball is a legit NBA player and think Tatum is a little overrated).

Yes. But if we would have drafted Tatum, AD would have been a Laker one season earlier.

Tatum is young, though, at 12 years old that's what he has over his contemporaries
