    Well brain power in the sense that a) he's got an NBA future so there's a time and place for that and b) if the time and place HAD to be that first time in college... then why risk your future to do it again? That's simply not a smart move.

    I agree he's super duper talented. I think if he got into the right program he could be fantastic. Is that program LA? I'm not really sure... but unless he blew my socks off in the interview process I'd wait until the 2nd round to grab him.

    One thing for Clarkson is his low body fat percentage and lean muscle mass shows off some fantastic core strength. Some of the acrobatic plays he makes are due to that strong core. He's learning to slow down/change gears which is huge. If Westbrook had learned that a few years ago his knees might be holding up better.

    ever since i first saw him play i said he was "too quick" if that makes any sense

    I told my boys if he learned to slow down and pace his game he woupd be a problem, and once he started getting consistent playing time he looked like he was more in control and has taken a big step ahead in his development. Definitely one of the best draft picks that mitch has made recently

    @ElginTheGreat, I tried to find one of your older posts regarding Russell and the more difficult competition he played so poorly against.I couldn't find that particular post. I had some extra time on my hands today, and I had a chance to look at him again, and I wanted to respond in more detail.

    It's a fair concern, but I think it's a bit overblown as you stated in the post I could find. Just as he struggled against Arizona, Wisconsin, & UNC, he had huge games against Indiana, Maryland, & VCU. IMO, he struggles when he tries to do too much.

    It's easy to use "skilled" and "fundamentally sound" synonymously, but Russell demonstrates the difference. He's very skilled, but he has some growing to do in terms of fundamentals. For example, when he drives to the hoop, he almost never puts on the brakes or dribbles through. If a defender cuts him off, which athletic players are more prone to do, he has a tendency to force the issue or jack up a floater, which is a low percentage shot.

    He's too reliant on his handle to get by a player, rather than technique. Steve Nash, if he's still around, would be ENORMOUSLY helpful to him. Jordan Clarkson talked about how he and Nash mainly worked on how to create separation from defenders. Nash never did that with athleticism, it was all with technique, and knowing when to pull what tool out of your toolbox. For example, Russell would be well served to incorporate a "hard stop" into his repertoire, where you start driving to the basket, plant your front foot to stop when you've gotten the defender heading in that direction, and then go up for the shot. It's similar to a pull up, but not exactly the same. Or simply keeping your dribble alive when you don't have a great look in the paint rather than forcing the issue. Nash was a master at that as well.

    The court vision is unteachable and the skill level is difficult to improve at this point, but the technique stuff is usually learned at this level for most of these guys, who have been able to create looks for themselves without a ton of technique up to this point.
