We'd have potentially one heck of a big rotation with Okafor/Upshaw and Randle/Black.

I think Upshaw at 27 would be more valuable. If he pans out and stays out of trouble, the 5 year contract that is guaranteed with a first rounder would be an absolute gem as far as a trade asset...assuming he doesn't end up better than Okafor or Towns.

Or he could be a total disaster and you're stuck with him on a guaranteed deal. I'd definitely rather have him at #34 than #27 if we could do it.

Source: Lakers will bring in Rakeem Christmas for a workout today. Lakers have No. 27 and 34 picks and could select Christmas in that range.

Seen Rakeem Christmas on DX today for the first time; I like him, but he seems kind of redundant with Black, IMO.

Its only guaranteed for two years. There are team options on like the last 3. And at that range, we're talking like 2 million total investment for two years. They could send him home after the first month and all we're out is 2 million dollars and the rotation player we likely would have selected at 27. With Okafor (or Towns) Randle and Clarkson, we have our young core. I'd try Upshaw at 27. If he panned out, he could be very valuable as trade bait.

^Now Dakari has my interest. Legit size; could be a good rim-protector with his length.

Christmas is the safe pick. Upshaw is either a home run or a strike out. I'd take a home run swing.

yes I agree. at that range (27 & 34) you always gotta go with the home run swing.

With the 34, yes, with the 27, I'd rather get a player I feel that will get the job done for what we need, rather than gamble on a player to wait and see. With the 27th pick, we need a player that will be there and ready to play from day 1, and fill our current needs of either a swingman or a guard. We're pretty heavy upfront already so I don't see a NEED for Upshaw unless he's there in the 2nd round.

It's a guaranteed roster spot, guaranteed time and money and energy wasted if he doesn't pan out. It's not just the contract money you're losing out on, it's the potential cost of whoever else we might have drafted at #27 who could have helped us (Chirstmas, Wright, Harvey, whoever). Maybe we trade the pick for a veteran who helps develop a kid. The time it takes for us to get sick of Upshaw (if he's a head case) might mean extra and unnecessary friction between him and the rest of the team. Sure we could dismiss him, but that means wasted resources which we just don't have the luxury of doing.

From what I've heard his interviews aren't helping enough to earn teams' trust yet. When you've got the kind of insane defensive upside this kid has and you find yourself still in the bottom half of the 1st round, maybe even the top of the 2nd, there's some serious red flags there.

I'd rather take a surer thing at #27 (like Wright probably) and then hope Upshaw is there on the other side at #34.
