no political party is able to come up with a plan that appeals to all americans. but it really speaks volumes that the dems have won the popular vote in every election except one for the last almost 30 years

they ran a god awful candidate in 2016. the signs were all there that trump had a real chance at winning. and she still got over 3 million more votes than trump did. i will say though, biden is not even close to being terrible like hillary was

It's so sad people have to still be educated on why the electoral college is necessary. If the formula was to win as many votes as possible, every candidate would be campaigning strictly in Florida, New York, California, and Texas to promote policies that only benefit those individuals. The president should be a leader for ALL people in a country. I guarantee you that if Trump won the popular vote and not the electoral, they'd be pushing for the popular vote to be eradicated.

Our options for President are embarrassing.

Even if Trump's financial policies are good for the country, he falls so short in other areas he's hard to take seriously. I have no idea what Biden is good at besides touching women and making them uncomfortable. We live in an era where the most qualified and well intending candidates have no shot at election because it's a really whack strategic popularity contest. Watching the slow decline and fall of the greatest nation on earth isn't that much fun to watch. oh well, back to watching WAP dances on TikTok

Everyone seems to want it both ways, but only one party in history acted the way they did after losing an election.(Shameful) It's been a long and embarrassing stretch for them when they realized America thought Donald Trump was better than the best they had to offer, and he actually might be rubbing it in their face for another 4 years. I'd Imagine wanting to be a lifelong politician doesn't have the same ring to it as it used to. Such a dirty business.

where else in the world can a person running for the highest office get less votes than their opponent and lose? it's just mindblowing really

the electoral college really does nothing but devalue the votes of people in CA and NY in favor of swing states. so instead of CA and NY deciding the election, it's OH and FL doing so. the EC itself was founded on the hope that there would be several candidates running in each election, all with a fair shot at winning and that parties would not be a thing. the founders saw the EC as a way to protect against an electorate that had no way of being reliably informed of each candidate

they'd probably be laughing if they saw this outdated system still being used. the EC does the complete opposite of "letting everyone's vote be heard"

Interesting choice, but his company should actually be profitable before he considers something like this. For some reason I thought he was foreign born which is a disqualifier.

What would be the alternative? I don't think they'd be laughing at this "outdated" system if there was no better system to replace it. The electoral college is far from perfect, but it's the best damn system because it does not allow California and New York to run this country. By the way, some of the poorest run states, are California and NY so I think that's a good thing.

Also the statement that Ohio and Florida are the ones that determine election, while they are important States that kinda swing back and forth along with states like North Carolina, Pennsylvania; I think that's about as fair and balanced as you can have it. Not sure what other system would work best.

Once again, it's not hard to understand. If you go strictly to the popular vote, NY and CA would run the country. No one else would have any say whatsoever. Politicians would literally never campaign anywhere else. The things that are best for those two states ARE NOT (regardless of your political leanings) best for the other 48. NY and CA also are two of the worst ran states in the country. If anything, we should be cheering for the electoral college because voters in CA are imbeciles that keep voting in the same people that run our state further and further into the ground from a financial perspective. It's not even about policy at this point or what you believe on social issues. CA is turning into a dump and is one of the most business hostile states in the country. If not for the weather and the beach, would ANYONE choose to live in CA? But the politicians play social angles in order to continue to get voted into office where they make terrible fiscal decisions every step of the way.

but shouldn't everyone's vote count? the EC does not make that possible. why should we value voters in swing states more than voters in CA and NY? are we not americans too? why are we going to fault people for their political beliefs just because they've voted a certain way historically? the popular vote is the only way to ensure that everyone's vote counts

CA is being run into the ground? not bad for the world's 5th largest economy

5th largest economy means nothing if you’re in debt.

it’s like someone saying “my business did $1 million last year”. That doesn’t matter. How much did you net after it was all said and done?

If that number is negative, are you impressed? I’m not. If you make money, but your employees can’t wait to quit and leave the company, did you win?

CA's economy is large, but its debt and infrastructure are terrible and not sustainable. There is a difference between the economy (which is mostly the private sector) and the government. Large companies, including left leaning people that put these morons in power, are bailing.

Now, to the Electoral College. How long do you think America would last if 3-4 states determined everything that happened to the other 46 states, as well as the vast, VAST majority of the land? The country would fall apart and probably result in a civil war. Why would the entire middle of the country be interested in being the United States when they have zero say and are never even acknowledged by the leaders?

The very thing you are speaking in support of (having everyone's votes count) would be crippled by a straight popular vote. The candidates would essentially run on platforms that were best for New York, LA, Houston, Chicago, and the Bay area.

yes, it's true that a number of large companies have left CA because its simply cheaper to do business in states like TX, TN, etc. but just as those companies leave, another bunch of them pop up and succeed right here in CA. rinse and repeat. is the state really suffering as a result of these companies leaving? i wouldn't say so

but that's the thing, states DO determine the election results because of the EC. not sure how you could argue otherwise. the EC completely ignores what the majority of americans want by valuing the votes from swing states higher than other places. every american's vote should count the same, and the popular vote is the only way that'd be possible

the only reason states like CA and NY would decide an election now is BECAUSE of the EC system. and like i said, that isn't even the case because CA and NY always vote blue. because of the EC, states like WI, FL, PN, and MI are the ones actually deciding the election

I think you might be confusing "States that decide the election" with "Diverse States." No question those states are seemingly deciding the election, but they aren't deciding it because the other states don't matter. They are deciding it because they are an "undecided voter" if you will. They seem like they are deciding the election because those states have equal amounts of Democrats and Republicans. If you think of the EC as a bunch of individual voters, they are the undecided voters that tip the scale either way, just like in a popular vote. California DOES decide elections. As does New York. If one of those states were to flip to red, none of those states you named would matter anymore. So to say they don't decide the election isn't true.

Everyone's vote shouldn't be equal either. A bunch of people piled on top of each other in New York shouldn't have more of a say as to what happens in the giant swaths of land in the middle of the country that they never even bother to recognize, but ultimately feed them. Votes don't just represent a person's personal wishes, they also represent the land and resources they come from.

Also, while no one knows for sure what the numbers would be, if you went to a straight popular vote, voter turnout would probably be vastly different in the Dark Red and Dark Blue states. A lot of people stay home for elections in those states if they lean the other way.

how can CA/NY decide elections when they're always going to vote blue? we already know which way they'll vote. meanwhile, we never know how the other states i listed will vote. which is why, in my opinion, they end up being the states who decide the election

wait.....what? everyone's vote shouldn't be equal? no point in discussing this with you any further then if you actually believe that. people vote for the candidate who best represents their interests. where someone lives should not change the value of their vote in any way. why should we value the personal interests of certain people higher based on where they live?

how are they trying to rig the election using mail-in voting?

and of course, let's ignore trump refusing to fund the USPS, calling for the election to be delayed, saying he may not accept the results, etc. imagine if obama had done that lol

What you are describing is a democracy. America has never been a democracy. It's a Republic.
