Here’s who MJ had to guard and who guarded him in his 6 championships:
    1991- Byron Scott
1992- Clyde Drexler (get a pass there)
    1993- Dan Majerle
    1996- Hershey Hawkins
    1997- Jeff Hornacek
    1998- Jeff Hornacek

Not to mention having Scottie Pippen and Ron Harper do his perimeter guarding dirty work on the defensive end.

Oh yeah, I'm not saying Jordan wouldn't have some points, but beating Kareem in one on one? No chance. That fadeaway vs. post up Skyhook? I'm going with the Skyhook and 7 feet 2 inches every time.

Totally man. Kareem absolutely has a claim to being the GOAT. And I certainly wouldn't disagree with anyone making that case. But my GOAT is Magic. A 6'9 PG who can play any position on the court and did so as a rookie in the finals, the best passer ever, and a guy who won 5 rings in 9 finals in 12 seasons. Nobody like him, except maybe LeBron.

Agreed. Jordan was actually the most dominant player I've ever seen (I never got to see Wilt, before my time). Some of that had to do with the fact that he revolutionized the position with his size. Most of the guys guarding him were about 6 foot 4.

Kareem on the other hand played in the era of the great big men.

You would. You look at someone like Wilt who was basically playing against people far smaller than him, some of which had other jobs to supplement their income. Kareem on the other hand played during the center position's golden years. Listen to who his career overlapped with: Hakeem, Ewing, Moses Malone, Parish, Sampson, Walton, Gilmore, Willis Reed, Wilt Chamberlain. His career overlapped with almost every pre-Shaq HoF center. And in that time, Kareem was the best and it wasn't even close. Another thing to consider with Kareem's hook. Yes, it was unstoppable, but he actually had incredible range on it. Shaq used to get to his sweet spot and operate from there. Kareem could hit that hook from any angle. He would line up that hook straight away in the key. He could extend the range on it. Let's also not forget that outside of Walton (and maybe Sabonis), Kareem might have been the best passing center ever.

Kareem's scoring record if he skipped college might truly be out of reach for all of history. Anybody catching him with a 3 yr head start kind of feels like cheating.

Despite his greatness, Kareem is still underrated.

I don't know. I think a lot of people have him as their GOAT. I do. But he's top 3 on almost everyone's list. Not sure if he can be underrated. I think it's more of an out of sight out of mind thing where we forget just how good all these guys were after they leave the league. Watching Kobe highlights after his death reminds me of how insane he was as opposed to post achillies Kobe. Same with Jordan. I think if someone is underrated, it's Magic. Magic dominated the game in a completely different way than Jordan did. But it was just as effective. He could control the pace and flow of an entire game.

Watching The Last Dance last night made me nostalgic for players who spent 3-4 years in college. And I fully support the rights of adults to transition straight from high school to the NBA, when warranted. But college ball used to be a lot more interesting.

If we're talking underrated players, I might have to go with Elgin. I am way too young to have ever watched him play in real time, but Chick Hearn said he was the best he'd ever seen. Yet his name is NEVER mentioned when people are listing the all-time greats.

and players used to come to the pros and know how to play basketball. We got to watch 6 years of undeveloped talent from prematurely awarded millennial millionaires who were not yet ready to think or play the pro game.

wasn't a winner, and the year he retired mid-season, they finally won without him.

    :Dudleyshrug:

Same reason lots of players don't get the credit they deserve. If Wilt had Russel's titles, he'd be talked about differently.

Magic AVERAGED over 60 wins a year for his entire career. Truly remarkable the impact he had on the team. And a joy to watch, to root for, etc. Talent, winning, and entertainment. It was the best ticket in town.

One thing I know is watching Jordan in his prime against prime Kobe , Wade , Lebron ect would have been more fun .

Who are the top 3-5 best SG/SF after MJ in the 91-98 era ?

Reggie Miller, Clyde Drexler...list is pretty thin. You then drop off into Mitch Richmond, Sprewell territory.

Penny Hardaway? Grant Hill? Hill was more of a sf/sg combo but same height as Drexler.

Penny was more of the pg on those teams. Nick Anderson was the shooting guard.

Only reason why they are doing this to Kareem is because he was a massive a-hole to everyone and everything his entire adult life. However, Kareem is the greatest college basketball player of all time and it isn't even close.
