What is Win Shares - WS?

A metric that estimates the number of wins a player produces for his team. This can be calculated on its own, or by finding a player's Offensive Win Shares and Defensive Win Shares, and adding those together. This number is generally calculated using full-season statistics.

Not at all. The league has been trending this way for the last 2 or so years...they've poured millions for dollars into analytics, and if you actually poured into the categories of each metric on offense and defense, you'll see some of the top teams in efficiency on both sides of the ball are using them.

Bare in mind, it's just a tool. It's not the be all end all. For instance, Okafor's numbers defensively; I would put some stock into those numbers, but I wouldn't be as concerned having watched him almost every single game while he was at Duke. Duke's head coach has a reputation of protecting players and not allowing them to foul; I've seen Okafor defend the pick in roll, defend the rim, and play good positional defense. So even though the numbers don't show great for him defensive, I take those with a grain of salt knowing what I've seen watching him.

So I won't get lumped into what I'm looing into for a center; here my 12 things that I look for in a center; now, that I'm up, and I want to avoid any further debate, this is what I look for specifically in a Center on BOTH ends:

    1) Rim protection/pick & roll defense
    2) Defensive Rebounding
    3) Finishing around the rim
    4) Screen setting
    5) Pick & roll offense
    6) Offensive Rebounding
    7) Outlet passing
    8) Running the court
    9) Feel for Cutting -
    10) Passing in half court
    11) Post Play -
    12) Outside shooting

To be fair Frank used his four years of experience to get them in foul trouble and to beat them on overplays. He won't have many opportunities to do that in the NBA I'd think.

Based on your preference, your number 1 pick would be WCS. Hehe.

That'd kind of the draw of Frank though. He's a smart player. He's not going to be the anchor like a WCS or Towns can be, but he's got the size and IQ to be a capable anchor. Okafor included as well.

In today's league, you just might be right. Although, I think Towns/Okafor could be get better defensively. Okafor's post/face up game could change the pendulum of the league. He's that good. It's just a matter of what I prefer in a guard oriented league; but I won't be upset getting Okafor. Actually, quite the contrary.

Kind of what I'm hoping for next year; Kobe actually closed out on Beverly in that play quite well for that corner 3 that Beverly loves; he funneled him toward the middle of the floor, Davis reacting to Beverly as a deterrent, Beverly does the right things and drops it off...nevertheless, Davis is quick enough to recover and block that shot.

I don't think he has the ability to be an achor, I really don't. I see career backup in him, but that's not a bad thing at all. He could be a really solid player on any team just with his knowledge and crafty play. I don't see him as a starter on a good team.

In a league where Bogut and Mosgov are starting 5s on Finals teams I think Frank the Tank can find a way to be an effective starter as long as he is surrounded by good players like those two stiffs are.

Well yeah but one of them plays with the MVP and the other plays with the best player on the planet... If he goes to Phoenix or Utah or something he either wont start at Center or they're going to not be very good teams.

Also those two guys are way better than Frank. They're both a little doofy, but they're fairly athletic, strong, and just beefy guys. Frank is weaker, smaller framed, and probably a lot smarter but not on their level.

Short news story on the Lakers and Wolves draft boards based on Ford's chat: http://www.silverscreenandroll.com/2015/5/27/8672069/lakers-draft-board-update-towns-on-top

Sounds like the Wolves still have Okafor as their top choice, while the Lakers have Towns as #1 on their list. 2nd on the Lakers draft board is a 3-way tie between Okafor, Russell, and Mudiay right now, and they are also considering Porzingis, Winslow, WCS, and Hezonja. Workouts are going to likely be the deciding factor.

I agree that Towns is a lock at 2. Judging where they drafted Bynum in 07, our history of Centers, and our huge need for one, I'd say that Okafor/Towns would be a lock at number 2. Mitch is and will do his due diligence and each and every prospect during these workouts. As for Russell, he needs a Kobe like workout that Kobe had in 96 to even make this a debate. That includes every other prospect as well, too. Okafor/Towns are on a different tier than the rest of their class...

Lemme tell you guys the chess that Mitch is playing right now compared to all these loser GMs that find themselves in the lottery all the time:

    1. Leak to Chad Ford that Towns is our #1 choice. The Wolves suck, their scouting department isn't great, and when they hear "the Lakers want Towns" their immediate, unconscious thought is "wow if the LAKERS want him, he must be the right guy".

    2. Tell the media we're looking at up to six maybe even eight options at the #2 spot in the draft. Now other teams are scrambling. Philadelphia desperately wants Russell. If they get desperate enough to swap picks, they might be willing to give up either their future pick or ours in return while we STILL get the guy we want.

    3. No cards get shown to anyone besides the people I know will keep their mouth shut. What does this do? It gives us an opportunity to build a draft board that no one else has while simultaneously driving the media crazy. They'll make up stories and continue blowing wild smoke which gives us an even stronger advantage.

    4. In the end we get what we want and everyone else gets what we don't want.

Welcome Jahlil. Here's your #15 Laker jersey.

Great find. I've been saying for a bit that Okafor was more athletic and a better defender than he was getting credit for. Glad to see at least some proof of that.

Nice find. Granted he can't do that every play, but is much closer to showing his abilities when the buzz going around (for whatever reason) lately is he has a 500 lbs anchor chained to his leg.
