Promoting Ryan West to PBO of L.A. Lakers ....

  1. Would be a great idea. Checks all the boxes especially Media goodwill.

Has not a thing to do with too young. Example A Bob Myers similar ballpark with age out of a talent agency same background as Rob ... becomes acknowledged great PBO and a guy allegedly everyone likes and trusts. Ryan grew from childhood in the organization and was the person who picked Kobe up for his legendary 20(?) minute workout for Jerry West. Saw Jerry and Mitch at work all those years. Scouting trips with Jerry in his formative years.

I posted this yesterday in Jeanie's thread and 24 hours later see no reason to change anything so just pasting it.

More? Ding from 5 years ago. Yeah it's Ding but is he wrong about Ryan in anything he's saying?

I am all for this. Ryan West has proven himself, to this organization and to the league. He has worked his way up, even when his father left he remained loyal to the Lakers. I think it's high time we promote him before some other time poachers our young talent again. (Quinn Snyder comes to mind)

I think he's too young. He'd be a better replacement for Rob, no? If Rob were to take a different role?

West is 39-40 and has a better background and tutelage for the Lakers from the best in the business vs Myers who is 44 and came to the Warriors at virtually the same age with far less, or no (??) FO experience or apprenticeship? Not sure on that but regardless. We have a GM who knows the cap and a cap specialist. Ryan would be full time in the role with fabulous cachet and good will and a great personality supported by all the input currently there. Just that he makes the final decisions. They've been grooming him all these years in addition to everything he has learned from his dad. Be that as it may everything going forward with bad media about our FO would come to a screeching halt. Woj, Ramona, Nichols, Bleeding Heart Plashke, who is going to be taking shots at Ryan West? The exact opposite will happen I would completely expect.

Edit. Myers came as the assistant GM in 2011, 8 years ago at the age of 36.

Do you have inside knowledge here or something? I think the Buss kids will occupy that position before Ryan does.

I am saying what they should do. Can you imagine the uproar and shot taking and it would be justified if Jeanie went family again? And to be truthful why in the world would we not expect a career of greatness with a ceiling higher for Ryan than any of the Busses simply by virtue of the West lineage? Outside the box strategic move, and it turns the s****y Lakers FO media bashing completely around. That is part of the beauty like I originally mentioned.

I wouldn't say no to it. I just thought he was being groomed for GM and not President. I just feel like we went with the non proven guys once and it bit us. I'm not eager to do it again. I'm all for keeping him in the family though, he's been a big part of our turn around.

I don't understand. It fell apart largely because of the part time approach Magic took to his appointment to the PBO position and the internal problems with Rob that sprung from there. It's not a rocket science position that he's never seen or been around before. All those years plus he would still have Pops' advice in general fashion if ever needed, with no conflict of interest.

Proven guys are hard to come by, proven guys were once unproven. Big risk, big reward. Playing it safe have not gotten us anywhere.

Truthfully though, I think Kurt is the president behind the scene...Which is why I see this as far fetch because of Jeanie relationship with Linda.

My wish is that Joey or Jesse Buss will have their father basketball genes and take over the business and regain Lakers status.

And how does the media view that? How does that get spun to show we are now out of the family run business versus getting the potential best talent possible due to experience since a kid both with the great Jerry West and in that very FO environment all these years? What particular part of the job would he have the potential to wreck the Lakers worse than the perception we have now with the Rambi after Magic did what he did? Is Ryan West going to wreck something? The only direction with West would be straight up in the public perception vs rock bottom now.

I feel that you feel very strongly about this, I dont want you to be disappointed if it doesn't happen anytime soon. I think we all hope for a better president, but from the speeches and interviews, doesn't sound like they are searching for one...

I'm asking for votes whether you would think it would be a great thing to happen or why not ..... specifically. Not whether or not we think it is likely to happen. I bet AEG would love the move. If we're to believe the dramatization of the meeting Monday with the perception of our FO being a total cluster bleep. That would turn 180 the day it happened. No one is going to do anything but root for Ryan West to follow in his dad's great footsteps.

FYI in that Ding article both Mitch Kupchack and Ryan himself compare his psychological make up with his dad's. How they're alike in key ways, what they first look for in a player as they scout and what their differences are. It's quite interesting. It would appear he would be a lot more comfortable doing the job in some ways than his Pop who they agree was tortured at times. And Ryan being the delve into all the details perfectionist type he is. That article was 5 full years ago and look at the exposure to the total aspect of the game he had by even that long ago plus exposure to elite scouting techniques from Jerry himself from an early age.

I don't know. I'd run it by Kurt and Linda and see what they think first. Maybe Phil.

Clearly I think this is a brilliant move.

    :Madsendance:

Since every signature of @vasashi17 typically includes something about getting a new PBO ..... I would welcome his input as to what he thinks of it. And if you're going to vote it as a bad idea please explain what you feel would be West's achilles heel here versus ALL the positives that would have you (or anyone else) fearful about doing it?

Secondly I'm respectfully tasking @Mr. Rambis to pass this along through his back channels to the AEG heavies to start the conversation with Jeanie about it.  Boom instant PR solution mixed with the most qualified person in the world to be given a chance with that job. I gotta think Ryan in a metaphorical cage match with any of the Busses is the best candidate. Equally important is what a disaster PR wise giving it to a Buss would be whether they deserved it or not. Right AEG? And putting Ryan in charge over any Rambi and Rob requested input with final decisions being Ryan West's takes care of the "Rob's a backstabber" and "Rambi being shadow executives" narratives. Let Lee Jenkins spin that Ryan West sucks. Not gonna happen. Simmons, Woj, No one.

S***, if Magic could do it anyone could. But it’s all about politics, would the younger Buss brothers be ok with it, would Rob be ok with someone leapfrogging him? A lot to think about when promoting people in this FO, that’s another reason why it’s dicey to employ so much friends and family instead of running it like a business, with a “nothing personal” attitude.

They gotta be self aware enough all of them as to the monstrous PR problem they have now and going forward with the family run business vs Professional talent.

And yes I get the politics. This of course is hypothetical.

Except for my request to @Mr. Rambis ;)
