Russ's cap hit is brutal but it would have been interesting to see what our 32m in cap space could have led to in greasing this potential trade through, if not for us then for another. Someone is going to want Russ bad and that someone is probably a contender that is cap strapped and needing to offset salary to make the money work.

We are in the business of taking on 2yr deals. Instead we "scrambled" away that space. Oh well... another missed opportunity.

lyles intrigues me. think he just hasn't found the right opporunity.

yeah, not concerned. presti is going to take the bounty for himself, and any third team is a dumping ground for undesirables. you'd rather have dragic for 19 than any combination of players we signed?

weren't you the guy doggedly defending the moronic FA moves, post-lebron last year?

    what is happening?

not a good combination. please let him go to miami because him and butler would start butting heads immediately

1 yr stop gap contracts that had us even in the running for max guys this summer.

Contingency for Kawhi dodging us was Ky or Butler, right? Doesn't appear we even had an in person meeting with those guys.

AD traded into space with trade kicker gives him near 30% max this summer and allows us to give him a 30% max extension up until he is 35%max eligible. Takes the headache out of having him opt out this summer.

That also allowed assets like Moe, Bonga and JJ not to be dumped needlessly all while having about 23m in cap space left.

Why does that number ring out to me? Green and Kcp's new deals come out to 23m. So we needed to etch out roughly 10m more for Mcgee and Boogie. So was that our contingency?

Weren't you the guy that would rather take on salary with assets if we struck out on max guys?

I've been consistent in that I want as many legit max guys as possible. Kcp has a no-trade clause, Green is a vet that only has value for a team that is trying to make the playoffs...so why would we trade him and if we do trade him for another star (which we can't since by himself he only brings back a 19.6m contract), then why would that other team do it if they're trying to make the playoffs?

We traded nearly all our immediate available assets for AD. Then we followed it up by pissing our cap space away in a very inefficient manner that gained us marginal valued assets instead of potentially good ones (ie future draft pick capital and/or young kids on team friendly deals). That's facts.

He's an asset that we gain for ourselves or help as a 3rd team in gaining assets.

If Russ wants Miami and Miami wants him, then they HAVE to look for a 3rd team cause they can't breach the tax apron (138m) after the Butler s&t.

After Kawhi chose the cLips, it was only us that had 30m+ in cap space with the Mavs as the only other competing team to have 20m+ in space in the entire league.

The way Dallas mucked up the initial Butler trade, Riles would have no choice but to go to us in a potential Russ trade.

More like dodged a bullet. Do we really need a 100% ball dominant guard who can't really shoot playing next to LeBron?

So what was the contingency then with 32m of space that we preserved with dumping assets like Moe, Bonga, JJ and yet another future 2nd round pick?

Wouldn't it be better to replenish our assets post-AD trade by taking in salary (like a Harkless) and still having remaining cap to go after Danny Green and Boogie?

If our contingency was paying a Klutch tax, I rather it would be in the 4m towards AD's trade kicker in unlocking an extension for the dude.

so were we or weren't we in the running? and you can see why i didn't care about that now.

according to whom? the completely uninformed media? pretty sure we were never on kyrie's radar and jimmy was never on ours (for whatever reason).

    1. we ignore that it took several teams agreeing to move a trade date back a full month to do that. wasn't happening.
    2. "assets"? our minimum signings will outperform these guys, at least two of whom might not even make it to their 4th nba season.

yeah...until i saw the market for it. salary dumps came with basically nothing attached this summer (including our own dump). hell, several of them netted a pick in the process. more evidence that clearing space early was probably a silly idea.

because teams are usually trading stars because they're not playing well?

you just like being wrong a lot? is that the thing? because you were wrong last summer (my goodness the smashbros was a disaster), wrong about magic (things seem a lot better since he left), and i think you're wrong again.

as for draft capital, ask boston what their future picks brought them. ours got us anthony davis. you only have so many, and we spent ours very wisely. i like production over potential. we got to watch potential lead us to the cellar for several years now. let other teams dream about what's going to happen in two years while we beat their a**** now (and probably in two years).

the idea that you need three stars to win isn't validated. 2 is enough, and 1 has been enough if it's the right one with the right support. no one's a FA next year, and we have a bunch of deals ending after that in case someone awesome does shake loose.

and, as this summer (and basically every summer ever) proved, we could get off all those one-years next year at minimal cost should something surprising arise.

Some of y'all just don't get it. Please see how we could have been a 3rd team in shaking down another team to release future draft capital we no longer have complete control of.

Okay, but I guess I'll fall in line...it's Magic's fault that 32m in cap wasn't used more effectively.

You're talking future draft capital and saying I don't get it? As long as LeBron James is a Laker, the play is not for future draft capital. The priority is building a team that can compete for a Ring. I'd say we've done just that.

*Looks at a roster that's deep, can shoot, can defend, and should probably be the favorites to win it all*

Yeah, I think we were pretty effective. Nobody has to "blame" anyone right now, we can all just enjoy a f***ing great team.

I get your assertion but once Kawhi chose the Clippers, it was time for the Lakers to build a team by filling out the roster.

Westbrick, while a nice player is owed a crap ton of moolah and frankly is a ball stopper and crappy shooter. He is not an asset but would be a millstone around the neck of the Lakers.

While it is nice to have as many max players as possible, a team wins a championship.

I usually am in agreement with your positions but this one I cannot get behind.

not to mention that we'd likely just get dragged through the process to up outside bidding, then be left with less than we have now.
