So, Hoskins reached game #162 last night in a double header. Runs Trout 136 Judge 119 Hoskins 107 Sanchez 106 Stanton 82 Doubles Stanton 36 Judge 36 Hoskins 35 Trout 30 Judge 21 Home Runs Sanchez 50 Judge 43/Hoskins 43 Stanton 38 Trout 33 Walks Judge 114 Hoskins 104 Sanchez 68 Trout 62 Stanton 59 RBI Hoskins 125 Sanchez 124 Stanton 100 Judge 97 Trout 93 I'm not sure why more isn't being said about these 162 games. I think it's the fourth highest HR total ever for a player's first 162 games, and he drove in more than Sanchez, produced more runs than any of these players, and hit ten more home runs than Trout. Ridiculously good start to his career.
Way too premature batting projections: (9) McCutchen 573 at bats, 155 hits, 31 doubles, 3 triples, 24 home runs, 11 stolen bases, 84 walks (6) Segura 554 at bats, 161 hits, 26 doubles, 5 triples, 11 home runs, 25 stolen bases, 29 walks (7) Harper 490 at bats, 135 hits, 29 doubles, 1 triple, 30 home runs, 11 stolen bases, 102 walks (3) Hoskins 550 at bats, 133 hits, 37 doubles, 0 triples, 40 home runs, 4 stolen bases, 82 walks (2) Realmuto 501 at bats, 141 hits, 30 doubles, 3 triples, 18 home runs, 6 stolen bases, 36 walks (4) Hernandez 550 at bats, 151 hits, 19 doubles, 6 triples, 9 home runs, 17 stolen bases, 70 walks (5) Franco 469 at bats, 118 hits, 21 doubles, 1 triple, 21 home runs, 1 stolen base, 32 walks (8) Herrera 547 at bats, 149 hits, 28 doubles, 4 triples, 17 home runs, 11 stolen bases, 40 walks That's 170 home runs from the starters, 86 stolen bases, and 475 walks vs. 152 home runs, 48 steals, and 433 walks last season from starters Bench (probably Williams will be traded) 9 Williams 448 at bats, 120 hits, 14 doubles, 4 triples, 17 home runs, 3 stolen bases, 30 walks (7) Quinn 406 at bats, 106 hits, 19 doubles, 12 triples, 7 home runs, 31 stolen bases, 33 walks OF Altherr 283 at bats, 63 hits, 19 doubles, 2 triples, 13 home runs, 9 stolen bases, 29 walks
The Phillies' roster currently stands at 34. Pitchers (19) Phillies are down to 19 pitchers. ...Starters (6) Nola, Arrieta, Eflin, Eickhoff, Pivetta, and Velasquez are probably the most likely fits for the 5 starting spots. Eickhoff's injury might mean he's out, at least for now. ...Relievers (13) Among relievers, probably Robertson, Pazos, Nicasio, Neshek, Neris, Dominguez, and Alvarez are likely to stick. Catcher (2) They have 2 catchers who, barring injury, will be on roster. Infield (6) They have 6 infielders. Walding would be the most likely not to stick around. He has options. That would leave five. Outfield (7) They have 7 outfielders, with two battling injuries and three as candidates to be moved. Quinn, Altherr, and Williams are out of options. If Quinn starts out on the DL, that makes things easier to start. Probably Cozens starts out in the minors.
BTW, I went to Harper's first spring training game, saw him draw a walk and come home on Hoskins's bomb. It's going to be fun watching this offense!
I'm thinking that once one of the injured OFs returns to action, we'll see a decision at that spot. There's an interesting battle among the Starting PItchers. Nola and Arrieta are locks. Pivetta is all but a lock. After that, it's a bit sketchy. Velasquez has had the most success in the bigs. Eflin was solid last year. But... Anderson is making a case for a crack at the rotation. Eickhoff has struggled with a forearm injury, but he had an excellent 2016 prior to injuries.
Phillies make some roster moves, down to 31. Pitchers (17) Phillies are down to 17 pitchers. Anderson (SP) and Pazos (RP) were sent down. Bleich, never really on roster, was released. Catcher (2) They have 2 catchers who, barring injury, will be on roster. Infield (5) They have 5 infielders. Probably set there. Outfield (7) They have 7 outfielders, with two battling injuries and three as candidates to be moved. Quinn, Altherr, and Williams are out of options. If Quinn starts out on the DL, that makes things easier to start. Probably Cozens starts out in the minors. Hunter (RP) and Quinn (OF) likely to begin on the DL. That's down to 29 active Phils. Four to go...
Down goes Cozens. He'll be back, but he starts the season in AAA. 30 (28) remain 17 pitchers 2 catchers 5 infielders 6 outfields
Down to 16 pitchers and 27 total players as Eickhoff gets the boot to AAA. I think this means the rotation is: Nola, Pivetta, Arrieta, Velasques, and Eflin.
A couple of moves settles the 25-man roster, I think: STARTERS (5) PROJECTIONS Arrieta 14-9, 3.29 ERA, 183 IP, 155 Ks Eflin 12-6, 4.35 ERA, 136 IP, 123 Ks Nola 13-7, 2.89 ERA, 196 IP, 214 Ks Pivetta 8-13, 4.94 ERA, 163 IP, 189 Ks Velasquez 7-9, 5.05 ERA, 122 IP, 127 Ks ...Cumulative: 54-44 RELIEVERS (9) (PROJECTIONS NIGH) Alvarez Dominguez Hunter Morgan Neris Neshek Nicasio Ramos Robertson CATCHER (2) PROJECTIONS Knapp (gotta check these projections) Realmuto (18 HR, 6 SB, 36 BB) INFIELD (5) PROJECTIONS Franco 21 HR, 1 SB, 32 BB Hernandez 9 HR, 17 SB, 70 BB Hoskins 40 HR, 4 SB, 82 BB Kingery 13 HR, 9 SB, 22 BB Segura 11 HR, 25 SB, 29 BB OUTFIELD (6) Altherr 13 HR, 9 SB, 29 BB Harper 30 HR, 11 SB, 102 BB Herrera 17 HR, 11 SB, 40 BB McCutcheon 24 HR, 11 SB, 84 BB Quinn 7 HR, 31 SB, 33 BB Williams 17 HR, 9 SB, 29 BB That's 27 listed, but Quinn and Hunter are likely on the DL, so that's 25.
Things coming into shape... Rotation Nola Wheeler Arrieta ? ? C: Realmuto 1b: Hoskins 2b: Segura 3b: Kingery? SS: Gregorius LF: McCutchen CF: Haseley RF: Harper
I'll be going through my projections for the Phillies' 2020 season here. Batting Order 1. Andrew McCutchen CF 472 at bats, 127 hits, 25 doubles, 2 triples, 20 home runs, 9 stolen bases, 72 walks -Cutch has to stay healthy, but he still has another good 2 seasons in him. He's tenth among those qualified among active players in OBP. He could score a ton of runs up there in the top spot. 2. Jean Segura 2B 3. Bryce Harper RF 4. Rhys Hoskins 1B 5. JT Realmuto C 6. Didi Gregorius SS 7. Scott Kingery 3B 8. Adam Haseley LF Rotation 1. Aaron Nola R 2. Zack Wheeler R 3. Jake Arrieta R 4. Zach Eflin R 5. Vince Velasquez R Bullpen

Bryce Harper RF 524 at bats, 141 hits, 32 doubles, 1 triple, 33 home runs, 12 stolen bases, 104 walks --Harper slashed .270/.376/.564 after the all-star break, blasted 19 home runs in 241 at bats, and stole 10 bases in just 67 games. He was a beast. 4. Rhys Hoskins 1B 530 at bats, 131 hits, 33 doubles, 3 triples, 32 home runs, 2 stolen bases, 106 walks --Hoskins went in the opposite direction of Harper, as he was one of the worst batters in the league after the break. But with three consecutive 110+ OPS+ seasons, and entering his age 27 season, he should be a force in the cleanup spot. 5. JT Realmuto C 6. Didi Gregorius SS 7. Scott Kingery 3B 8. JT Realmuto C 517 at bats, 143 hits, 33 doubles, 3 triples, 22 home runs, 7 stolen bases, 39 walks --Realmuto was arguably the best catcher in baseball last season. He was an all-star, won a Gold Glove, won a Silver Slugger, and finished 14th in the MVP voting. He's 29 year old, has years of excellent ball ahead of him. 6. Didi Gregorius SS 459 at bats, 122 hits, 22 doubles, 2 triples, 21 home runs, 5 stolen bases, 28 walks --A two-time top 20 finisher in the AL MVP voting, Gregorius will be 30. He can provide a pop at SS the Phils haven't seen regularly, and if his defense can get a little closer to where it was pre-injury, he'll be a steal. 7. Scott Kingery 3B 484 at bats, 115 hits, 33 doubles, 5 triples, 16 home runs, 17 stolen bases, 37 walks --Kingery has been asked to shift postions about as much as anyone in the business. He has played 137 games at SS, 66 at CF, 51 at 3B, 14 at 2B, 6 at LF, and 4 at RF. It hasn't gotten to him, though, as he has made strides on offense and defense. At 26, he has a bright future before him. 8. Adam Haseley LF 361 at bats, 97 hits, 22 doubles, 0 triples, 8 home runs, 7 stolen bases, 22 walks --In 2017, Haseley was playing at the University of Virginia. Two years later, he was thrust into the starting lineup - mostly as a CF. He'll likely be in Left, the youngest player in the lineup. Rotation 1. Aaron Nola R 2. Zack Wheeler R 3. Jake Arrieta R 4. Zach Eflin R 5. Vince Velasquez R Bullpen
Rotation: 1. Aaron Nola Projection: 203.1 IP, 11 wins, 8 losses, 228 Ks, 3.60 ERA, 34 GS --Nola will have a co-ace in Zack Wheeler, but he's the face of the Phils' pitching staff. Would love to see him win more games, but he has won more than 12 games only once in his career.
2. Zack Wheeler Projection: 168.1 IP, 10 wins, 8 losses, 167 Ks, 3.97 ERA, 28 GS --I'm not sure Wheeler has the stuff Nola does, but he has put together three excellent seasons in his brief career. The problem is that those three seasons have come in the span of seven years. He's inconsistent because of injuries. But at his best, he's a top-tier second starter. 3. Jake Arrieta Projections: 159.1 IP, 11 Wins, 9 Losses, 132 Ks, 4.06 ERA, 28 GS --Arrieta has pitched his best ball years ago, but he can still eat up innings and give the Phillies a chance to win games. This is especially true if he's not matched up against team's top two pitchers. 4. Zach Eflin Projections: 149 IP, 10 Wins, 11 Losses, 120 Ks, 4.42 ERA, 2 CG, 26 GS He was on fire before the ASB, posting 100 Innings in 17 Starts, winning 7 games, and doing that with a 3.78 ERA. He could be in line for a career best season. 5. ? The three most likely candidates to fill the last spot in the rotation are Vince Velasquez, who can't stay healthy; Cole Irvin, who was hit hard in his rookie season; and Nick Pivetta, who massively regressed last season. Vince Velasquez Projections: 132.1 IP, 9 Wins, 9 Losses, 145 Ks, 4.96 ERA, 27 GS Nick Pivetta Projections: 150.2 IP, 9 Wins, 10 Losses, 143 Ks, 5.51 ERA, 27 GS Cole Irvin Projections: 101.1 IP, 6 Wins, 5 Losses, 91 Ks, 4.98 ERA, 20 GS Enyel Dos Santos could be in the mix, and the Phils have some decent pitching prospects at lower levels.
