Well the point was just that we'd be okay if we lost the pick. The rebuild might take longer, but we'd still be okay. We'd make it out of the summer alright thanks to the emergence of Clarkson.

I agree that Clarkson has made this loss of a pick easier to stomach since we essentially got two top ten picks in this year's draft.

We'l add a lottery pick next year regardless of what happens in the draft when Julius comes back healthy and ready to tear up the league. If anything, adding a guy like Julius combined with Clarkson will add some wins to this team. I've venture to say we'd have about 5-7 more wins with a healthy JR right now if healthy.

Add in another max FA with some additional pieces to fill out the roster, and I think we could be a mid 40-win team next year minus the pick and contend for the PO's...

Possibly. The only realistic scenario I see that has us in the playoffs is if Randle can play sf, and play it well, and we sign Love. It isn't enough to just sign Love. It has to be coupled with Randle excelling at the sf spot. Love/Randle/Kobe/Clarkson with Black and Swaggy off the bench might sneak into the playoffs if everything breaks right.

We'd have to figure out a rotation to stagger the minutes and decide which combinations work best; Clarkson playing the 1 with Randle at the 3 and Love at the 4 doesn't sound too bad theoretically. We'd just have to see if it could work...I'm still relatively optimistic about next season minus the pick.

Oh, by the way, if we lose out on this pick, we'll have the one next year without any restrictions; mind you, we'll field a better team and my thinking is we'll end up with a pick that lands in between 14-21 depending on our record. So, well we won't get a lottery pick this year, the goal should be sign a max Free Agent this year, develop Randle and Clarkson next year, fill out the roster with more talent, and contend for the PO's while keeping your pick that will land in the top 20.

Here's a question. Next year's draft is supposed to be very weak. I've read some are comparing it to the Michael Carter Williams RoY draft class. What would everyone here think of trading the Houston pick, our first next year and Hill for a shot at a top 12-13 pick? We will probably be able to grab Grant or Dekker in that spot. Is that worth it?

Walk away with Randle, Clarkson, Black and Dekker over the course of 3 seasons of drafting (counting next season's pick to move up this season)

I'd say yes, but I think most would disagree. We trade our picks pretty regularly. Also, can we? If we do that, we'll have to have a 2017 pick I think because we're not allowed to go two seasons in a row without a 1st rounder. I think by the rules we'd have to acquire a 2017 first rounder somehow? We gave up our own to the Magic in the Dwight/Bynum/Iguodala/Vucevic trade.

    You can't trade first in successive seasons;

The best method to do what you're suggesting is purchasing a pick or even using cash as a supplemental method of moving up. After watching Hill and his inconsistency for most of the season, I doubt we'd move up significantly.

Does anything change about moving up if we keep our top 5 pick? If we can package Hill and our later picks to get into the teens, jeez...imagine a top 5 pick AND a Dekker, Grant, RHJ, or Kaminsky?

Nope nothing changes that to me. If we have a shot at moving up in this draft I hope we take it. Also, Hollis-Jefferson is close to our Houston pick. We might not have to give up much to get to him if you want him.

Nothing changes if we keep our top 5 pick if we decide to move Hill and our Houston pick...so for example, let's say we draft Karl-Anthony Towns with the 2nd pick, you still have the potential of trading

Hill/Houston 1st to move up to grab one of the players you mentioned; I believe the scenario would have to be that another team acquiring Hill in any S&T scenario, would be less money annually but maybe lock him in for 3-4 years while sending him and any draft picks to that team. So, you have something like; Hill signed for 6 million per at 3 year deal which is possible since we have his Bird Rights and then you attach a 1st round pick with him.

Nothing changes. In fact, I would explore that a great deal. Although Rondae Hollis Jefferson is actually projected around our current Houston pick in some mocks. I do like him too. I would be willing to flip our pick along with both seconds if it allowed us to jump just 5 spots to give us a better shot.

We are allowed to sign-and-trade guys like Lin and Davis and Hill if we renounce his rights so all of those are weapons as well. If we have a shot to move up in the draft, we take it. I'd package a S&T Hill, Hou 1st, both 2nds, (and our 2016 1st in exchange for their 2017 first) for a chance to move up and grab another kid.

Imagine we draft- Cauley-Stein and Dekker. Or Winslow and Kaminsky. Or Johnson and Russell. We could conceivably rebuild without adding a high level FA, it'd just take a few years. Imagine something like:

    Clarkson/Lin
    Bryant/Ellington
    Dekker/Young
    Randle/Kelly
    Okafor/Davis

I mean I didn't spend more than 10 million there. We'd have 10 more million to spend at least.

I'm looking at Atlanta right now. Millsap is coming up for an extension this summer, and Horford is too, soon. Can they use additional size if Millsap leaves and takes his talent elsewhere; how much are they willing to spend on Milsap and/or Horford while being in a relatively small market in Atlanta. Do they spend to keep their core together and keep winning?

Not only would I target them for Hill; but what about Lin? Could they use an additional utility big off the bench and/or an upgrade at backup PG. Lin is a decent fit within that offense being that they utilize a lot of pick in roll, ball movement, and could his skill-set could be utilized rather well there in ATL? I wonder what the asking price would be for the #11 spot? Maybe additional cash compensation? We could still get a relatively decent player at 11...

Package Lin/Houston 1st/2nd rounder and cash for ATL's 11 pick?

They are at 40 million. If we send Hill, that leaves them approximately 15 million or so to resign Carroll and Milsap. I think if we have a shot at making something happen with that pick, Brooklyn has to get into the playoffs making that pick the 15th pick. The problem with Lin is Lin has to actually want to play in Atlanta. He's an UFA.

I think Lin is a better fit than Hill, actually. Our advantage is we have Lin's Bird Rights; he's not going to start anywhere, so without thrown out of the equation, Atlanta is a good fit for the following reasons if I'm Lin; their winning, a good basketball 'fit', fills a need at back PG and improves Atl's bench. Sure, it's Lin's choice, and it will come down to $$$, but will there be a better opportunity for Lin elsewhere? He'd be hard-pressed to find anything as good as Atlanta. Just a thought...

I think it's a fantasy that a team would give up their #1 pick in the 10-15 range to pick up Lin and/or Hill and our 27th pick. No one want's Hills contract including the Lakers. Everyone knows the Lakers will decline his option and he can be had for much less than 9mil. There is absolutely no benefit to Lin to do a sign and trade. He ain't getting a 5 year deal from anyone. It's too bad Young's value has dropped to next to nothing or he could of been the bait.

You're probably right. It's probably more realistic for teams who are going to be over the cap looking to release players; i.e. Golden State. I'm just spit balling...

I don't mean to be debbie downer ... I just don't see it. I think all the teams in the league are excited about this upcoming draft and value those rookie contracts.
