2015 Nba Draft Discussion: Russell, Nance Jr., Brown

Ummm.....who won? Am following wife around the aisles in Target. Duke I'm assuming?

 

Winslow carried duke to the win. very impressive. huge rebounds and big shots.

 

Winslow is playing his way to the top spot for small forwards in the draft. He has really pulled it all together these last few days.

 

Yeah, I watched a few of the Zag games.

Not quite like his dad, more high energy, athletic player. Arvydas was super skilled for his size, it was a shame that he wasn't able to join the NBA earlier.

Fiery attitude though.

 

I'm just starting to have Sam Dekker on my radar screen. First impressions after having him on the screen from listening to others here and watching parts of his huge game against AZ are: athletic, "money" type playmaker/shooter, 6'9" tall and super versatile. Since Winslow as opposed to Johnson is not as good defensively and seems to be a bit of a "chest thumper" "me" player.......what is better about or would make Winslow more attractive than Dekker??

I think arguments can be made for most of the small forwards.

I will say Winslow is no slouch on defense.

I also like the fact that Winslow and Dekker are stepping up when it matters most. The occasional celebrations don't really bother me. They are still teenagers. I don't think that will be a problem at all.

 

Dekker is having a great tournament and I think he would be a great pick up if we could somehow move up and grab him in the middle of the first round. But like I hinted at above, I'm not sold that Winslow isn't as good as Johnson defensively (or at least he isn't that far behind Johnson). I also don't think he is a "me" player at all. I'm not sure where that came from, but nothing about the kid says he isn't a team player. At least not what I have seen. He has celebrated a few times and had a gaff the other night that lead to an easy layup for his opponent, but he made up for it with a great game.

I do think he has a higher ceiling Dekker.

 

Hmmm...I have seen Wes doing a lot of that; he'll occasionally remind us that he's ultra athletic by having a swat like that or a highlight dunk. I haven't seen any of his man defense, his ability to close-out, his lateral quickness to keep up with guards, the ability to fight through screens, take charges, be in the right places, and use intelligence; i.e. if someone is good going to their left forcing them to their right, and being fundamentally sound. Not to take away from what you're saying, it's just so easy to get caught up in, 'wow, he did just that,' instead of somebody just make the right fundamental play on defense.

By the way, I've seen Stanley doing all the above defensively; he's quite capable on that end; offensively, he might be a work in progress, but that defense that he brings his top notch. I'll have to pay more attention to Winslow because I know all of the physical tools are there for him to be an excellent defender. I'll record the Final Four game, read scouting reports of Winslow, and try to fin more video of him as we go forward toward the lottery...

 

Winslow does have a higher ceiling. He also moves off the ball quite well evidenced by the game in Utah when Okafor was getting doubled; Winslow cutting and moving nicely and doesn't necessarily need the ball to be effective.

 

Actually, right now I would probably lean toward Stanley to be honest LOL. I mainly wanted to point out that that Winslow is a pretty good defender and I don't think he is necessarily a me first player. I have been tough on him in my comments, but I know Stanley is a talented guy.

 

Man I hope we can keep the pick...

Very nice. He's going to be a very good defender at the next level. I also think his rebounding and steals will translate has well. Johnson, Clarkson, and Randall, are a nice trio...
