I had heard it'd be closer to 85 or maybe even 90 million in a couple seasons. Even if we maxed someone this summer AND next we're going to have just ship loads of money to throw around.

@Savory Griddles That made me think of an interesting scenario. One I don't think is likely, but I formulated a roster plan around it nonetheless. If we decide against addressing our PG spot in FA/draft and decide to develop JC there going forward, then every other slot on the roster has to get solidified, two deep at each spot. I'm not talking about fringe NBA players, rather a well rounded roster with one of the best bench units. I think this scenario is only a faint option if we land a top 2 pick in the draft. We land 3 or 4, we take Russell or Mudiay and JC's growth and development gets stunted for a year. This is a roster plan with Clarkson as our starting point.

    With Okafor/Towns:
PG - It's time to move on from Linsanity. I hope people don't get fooled by his post trade deadline performance. He kicked it up a gear for a contract. The definition of a contract year player. Soon as he gets his payday, it's back to suckville. If we plan to groom JC for the job, then I want actual mentors for him. Not a guy who he talks to twice and is too busy promoting his own brand in Canada, but a guy who will be on the bench and in his ear every day. Jameer Nelson is my #1 choice under this scenario. He can still put up decent numbers as a year rental while playing 20 minutes a night. Head to Google, there are some very good stories of him mentoring guys on the Magic and then guys like Holiday and IT to a degree. You don't hear much in that regard in Denver, but that's a lost cause. Mo Williams would be great, but I fear his play since being traded (even getting POTW) is going to make him too expensive. With the Houston pick, I take best PG available for my 3rd stringer (K. Dunn, T. Jones, G. Lucas, D. Wright).

SG - I bring back Ellington. He's earned it and seems to like it here. With Young and Ellington both backing up Kobe, you can scale Kobe's minutes back to a responsible number and be covered for the games Kobe will have to sit for (back to backs, 4 in 5 nights, injury, etc). I don't expect Kobe to play 82 by any means or anything north of 30 MPG a night, unless Scott is as irresponsible as he was to start this season. If all goes well, you can slide Young up for a few extra minutes at SF.

SF - This is where I'd throw most of my money at. Our SF situation is pathetic. A complete overhaul is needed. That means Wesley Johnson needs to get far, far away from this team. I don't throw it at one player, I throw it at two. I go after both Danny Green and Wes Mathews. Your perimeter defense and 3 point shooting both skyrocket by these pickups. Matthews' injury lowers his value considerably, which could be a blessing for us. I don't think his game will change post-injury because his game doesn't rely on athleticism. Split minutes and bring Matthews along slowly if needed. I'd construct their contracts favorably for both as far as PO/TOs go, if one blooms and the other becomes expendable, give yourself that out after 1-2 years.

PF - same thing I said about Ellington goes for Davis. He's been a great pickup for us. Definitely more than capable of backing up Randle.

C - You get your franchise cornerstone with either the 1st or 2nd pick, either would be a great addition. Let Black back him up, I like his motor and D in that role. I'd look for another big to cover as a 3rd string PF/C for injuries and the inevitable rookie wall for Randle and Okafor/Towns. I've seen all I want to see from Sacre and would rather go another direction. Joel Anthony, Nazr Mohammed, Luis Scola, Jason Maxiell, or Reggie ball grabbing Evans

    Okafor or Towns/Black/?
    Randle/Davis/?
    Green/Matthews
    Kobe/Young/Ellington
    JC/Nelson/ROOK

It's a doubtful route, but one I really hadn't given much thought to until just now. Remove Kobe from that squad in a year and it still has a very attractive foundation for a top tier FA next summer.

I like Clarkson, I really do, and he has a lot of potential, but he's not a starting caliber guard at the moment, in relative terms of talent in the league. I still see Jordan as a backup and still has a lot to learn about being a point guard if that is his role, because he's primarily a scoring/combo guard.

Although Rondo hasn't statistically been great the past few years, whether due to injuries or just lack of talent around him, he's still a highly regarded point guard in terms of talent. He's still a great passer, he's one of the better rebounding guards in the league, and he plays with a chip on his shoulder.

That may not be the case currently with Dallas, but I'm not sure that's exactly the place and talent that brings out the player that he is.

Either way, Clarkson will be the backup no matter what, unless we completely strike out in Free Agency in acquiring a veteran PG.

Nevertheless, the issues between big and small markets arose again in Monday's round of Board of Governor meetings in New York. Owners started a conversation on future revenue sharing. With possible change still two years away, sides are forming again. As the $24 billion TV deal starts to pour into the league, as payrolls expand, small-market advocates made a preliminary presentation about further payouts in revenue sharing. Portland's Paul Allen offered an idea on bringing smaller-market profit margins closer to those of big-market teams, and it wasn't met with much enthusiasm.
Several big-market representatives bristled, including Dallas owner Mark Cuban. For a few minutes anyway, Cuban sparred with Allen, league officials in the room told Yahoo Sports.

"Are you from China?" Cuban asked.

Everyone had a laugh over it and considered the barbs part of the busting of chops that forever goes on. That's forever the big vs. small conversation among these billionaires.

Nevertheless, everyone left the meeting with an understanding that revenue sharing promises to become a difficult issue again. "The small markets want more, because there's more to give," one high-ranking Eastern Conference official told Yahoo Sports.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/why-the-nba-s-draft-lottery-reform-is-a-slippery-slope-173150585.html

Should be fun negotiating with all this money and of course smaller market teams want more revenue sharing from the Lakers. 50 million annually isn't enough we're paying out currently. LOL!!

It's awesome. Small owners want everything without working for it. F*** off Portland. You have a good team. Make it a great team, go to the Finals, and make some money. If San Antonio and Oklahoma and apparently even Atlanta can do it, then you can too.

    Rondo/Clarkson
    Kobe/Ellington
    Matthews/Young
    Davis/Randle/Kelly
    Towns/Black/Sacre

This is how my ideal offseason would (realistically) play out.

Get Towns in the draft. We get Rondo on a discount. We get Matthews on a discount. Be able to resign Ellington and Davis. Perhaps have a little bit of money left to sign another SG/SF type player.

That's kind of where I'm leaning too (although Okafor and Towns at this point are becoming interchangeable to me). Now the problem is Matthews won't be ready until probably half-way through next season. I do though love the idea of shoring up our bench unit this summer AND getting an undervalued player that can make us more competitive right away. If we have a chance, I'd love to retain someone like Price for depth. He played well with bigger minutes this season and we need the depth behind Rondo.

Also, I'd start Randle over Davis. We need a go-to PF/C scorer on the floor and I think that's Randle next season. I might start Randle/Davis and let Towns come off the bench and develop against bench unit players.

Yeah, it's probably understood that Wes won't be ready until sometime into next season, but it will be a great investment once he returns for the tools he brings. That's also why I wanted another SG/SF type player to stand in until he gets back.

I'm okay with Price as well, I also think Ellington can run the point if needed as well, he's shown some pretty good passing and handling skills from what I've seen.

As for Randle starting, he's still got to earn it for me, I'm sure with Byron as well. Also, he's got to ease into playing NBA minutes.

Yeah I'm assuming he earns it in camp, but Randle was very close to earning it already LAST training camp over Boozer... I'll be surprised if he takes a step backward this season in that department. I don't necessarily want him playing starters minutes though anyway, I just want him going against the better competition at this stage in his development.

Someone like Demare Carroll is a good name to keep in mind too for the SF spot. His numbers are similar to Wes Matthews, but he's more under the radar and could be a similar price while contributing right away.

It will depend on what happens with Millsap or how much his replacement cost them (Monroe?), but they have just over $39m on the books going into this summer. Unless someone drastically overpays for Carroll, I don't see him wanting to leave Atlanta and I don't see the Hawks letting him go. He's on the best team in the East, has a shot at the Finals, and he's getting a career high 9 shots off a game this year. There's plenty of touches and opportunities for him there. Hawks rely on him as their defensive (Bron) stopper. The fit makes too much sense barring someone overpaying. Hell, he even has his coach going to Drake concerts with him. haha

Well it's a name to consider anyway. I agree he's got a great gig right now, but we should still keep an eye on him.

    Thanks for shooting me down!

@JSM I'm starting to get on the JC boat as well.

    Okafor or Towns/Black/?
    Randle/Davis/?
    Green/Matthews
    Kobe/Young/Ellington
    JC/Nelson/ROOK

That's really appealing to me. I don't think we get both Green and Matthews, but I'm more than happy with either one of them, because I see Ellington and Young as our backup SF/SG. I also really like Jameer Nelson. Remember when he was a Laker killer that year that we beat them in the Finals? Great veteran presence, and either Green/Matthews (I prefer Matthews and he seems more viable) are really the player that makes this starting lineup complete.

My only concern with this lineup is the HUGE amount of youth in the starting lineup.

One thing to consider: with the cap smoothing proposition shot down by the Player's Association that means that basically everyone is going to have cap space in the summer of 2016, including teams that are currently capped out and are championship contenders. This means that if the Lakers don't want to watch the best free agents join up with LeBron, Westbrook, Davis, Harden (ugh), etc then they will need to have a team in place that can attract players.

The Lakers will have room due to Kobe's deal expiring, but the giant cap increase in 2016 means that there might be extra pressure on them to spend their money this summer in order to have a team in place that can attract free agents. Obviously most of us hope this doesn't mean Rondo, but they may throw max money at a Greg Monroe or Dragic-type player.

Another interesting sub-plot: How many free agents will look to take 1-year deals knowing that there will be a lot more money available the following year? That could be a big factor in this summer's free agency as well.

'You overpay for premium pieces, like a rim defender, or a Middleton quality wing. You only bring back guys like Lin and Davis, or bring in similar, on value deals. Impact at high dollars, role players at value, and draft picks for growth potential.'

Got this from another poster on another forum...this should be our strategy with FA's.

Overpay... for Middleton? Nah. I'll overpay for Dragic or Monroe or even DeAndre Jordan, but I'll pay market price for Middleton.

Do you watch Middleton? I'd overpay for him in a heartbeat. He's having a great year.

Yep kept track of the Bucks because I wanted to see how Parker was doing, then I wanted to see what Knight was up to, and I've really liked Giannis's development. He's putting up roughly the same numbers as Carroll and Danny Green. I wouldn't overpay for either of them either. I'd pay a reasonable deal for them, but not overpay like he's some kind of star.

Middelton isn't going to come here and be directly responsible for us winning 5-10 more games, so no I won't overpay for him. Aldridge, Love, and Gasol would. Dragic might. Jordan might. Monroe might. Despite the protests of some even Rondo could. Middleton couldn't.

^Middleton is a bigger version of Matthews; Matthews is the better player, but Middleton is younger, averaging slightly less pts per game but shooting a higher percentage from both the 2 point line and 3 point line. He's also a bit bigger so he could play the 2 and the 3 and has been one of the reasons for a resurgent Bucks teams. He's also 6th in plus minus on the season when he's on the floor.

You think Rondo is going to come here and add 5-10 more games? I highly doubt that. The cap is going up to $88-92 million dollars; yes, I'd overpay for him..in a heartbeat. Agree to disagree on this one...
