I seriously doubt they were planning on offering Dragic the max. But saying they're going to offer Dragic the max puts them in a much better position to negotiate with the Suns. Give him up now or match our 20M a year to keep him, take your pick. In any case having a guy like Dragic on board could help us a lot, if he's telling the media he wants to re-sign with us, we'll have a much better chance of recruiting another top FA. That said you can't trade for Dragic under the impression that we're going to offer him the max & not do it unless he severely underperforms, so we'll offer him the contract if we're able to trade for him. We'll just have to count on the cap going up as much as it sounds like it's going to. If that's the case even at 20M a year Dragic might end up being a bargain.

like others have said, hell to the no to Dragic at MAX money. I would quit being a Lakers fan if we did something as stupid as that. Dragic should get NO MORE than $12M.... Kyle Lowry is actually way better than him and he's at $12M...so I would wager that dragic is actually closer to 10M a year...

You have to take into account the expected rise in the salary cap in 2016. You have bigs that don't average double digits in any category like Tristan Thompson turning down 11M a year. Guys like Hayward & Parsons getting max or near max contracts. Superstars signing 2 year deals or working an opt out into their contracts for 2016 when they could get 4-5 year deals to protect them from losing a ton of $ due to injury. All because the rumors about the cap in 2016 have the cap rising so much that max contracts might approach 30M a year.

I don't agree that Lowry is a better player than Dragic but I'd definitely take him at 12M a year over Dragic at 20M. But if the cap ends up going up as much as they're expecting it to, 20M in 2 years is going to be like paying a guy 13-14M this season. Not the end of the world by any means.

Precisely. Thanks for adding some perspective to that...I'll also add that that Julius will project into a starter; he's on a rookie cost controlled contract; add in the top 5 pick who will be on the same rookie scale contract and who will potentially be starting down the line and you have two of your starters at very cost friendly deals for the next 3-4 years. Oh, and Kobe will be off the books next year; so you still have cap room to add at the very least 1 more max and 1 more starter...

I'm not even consider the bench; Clarkson, Kelly, Tarik, Sacre, Young, and maybe even Ellington coming back and you have a very inexpensive bench.

Well first of all I'd like to point out that Hayward is worth the max. He's athletic, can shoot, can create a little bit, and plays decent defense. He's a max level guy. You jut never really hear about him because he's on a terrible team. His numbers this season 19.7 points, 5.0 rbounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.4 steals in 35.2 minutes. He's shooting 46% from the field and 39.2% from deep. He's a max extension type of guy and he's proving it this year.

I do agree though that the upcoming jump in Cap will change the way the next couple of years look as far as what the Lakers are willing to shell out. That being said, a MAX deal would be crazy for Dragic. We're talking roughly 20 million dollars for a guy who has never carried his team to the NBA Playoffs. He's never made an All-Star team. His greatest accomplishments in the NBA are a 3rd Team All-NBA selection and the Most Improved Player award. His numbers this season are down from the last. His team is in a worse position now than it was last year.

Dragic is maybe a 14-15 million dollar player even WITH the adjust Cap figures. Lowry got 12 million. John Wall got 14.7 million. Jrue Holiday got 9.9 million. Mike Conley got 8.7 million. In fact if we gave Dragic the max he could very well end up being the highest paid PG in the NBA. I like Dragic, but that's ludicrous.

Giving him a max deal is completely overestimating his worth. This rumor wasn't floated by the Lakers. Now the pressure is on us to make that offer in the summer if we want to negotiate with Dragic's representatives. This rumor was floated by Houston to pressure Phoenix into trading Dragic now. If there's even a hint to Phoenix that the Lakers are willing to break the bank on Dragic, they'll move him. They can't afford three higher priced PGs, especially if Dragic gets some ridiculous offer. Some team (again probably Houston) is trying to force Phoenix' hand. Not to mention whichever team trades for Dragic ends up with a better chance at keeping him than LA does of getting him just like Rondo. Two birds with one stone.

This is what I've been worried about with the Dragic hype. I do not want to overpay for this guy. I'm not even much of a fan of his. I really hope we drop this. I'd rather spend on Wes Matthews. He'll be half this price. This is crazy talk.

I doubt this rumor is based in reality. Sounds like the typical "let't throw the Lakers name in" tactics by an agent or NBA exec, to try to add pressure for a trade or signing.

Caution on Dragic: he had a season that was a statistical outlier.

Look at his PPG/APG in his career:
    12.2/5.5
    15.9/6.0
    15.3/6.0
    15.9/7.2
    15.8/7.9
    20.8/6.0
    17.5/4.4
That 21/6 is quite unlike his other seasons. Get rid of that and look at his last three seasons: 16.4 ppg, 6.5 assists - which are good numbers (he shoots FGs well, but he's a pretty bad 3pt shooter over most recent seasons).

Now, pause for a second - how much would you pay Lin?

His three seasons before coming to LA: 13.5 points, 5.4 assists - not as good as Dragic, obviously, and I'm not saying that it is, but I am saying that given what Lin was giving per 36 (15.4/6.4 career), we shouldn't be expecting much more from him. And given what Dragic (16.9/6.3) has given in his career, we should have certain expectations. Do we expect Dragic to give $10M+ per year more than Lin? I don't, and I think it would be stupid to expect it. He's also two years older than Lin, mind you.

Understood. Although, he's playing in a 3-guard system with Bledsoe and Thomas; he doesn't shoot the ball has much since they're more distributed, he works more off the ball has a spot up shooter; the year that was a statistical outlier happened to be last year when Bledsoe was hurt; he was great last year...unfortunately, in the tough Western Conference, the Suns barely missed the playoffs last year. I don't mind being in the minority on this; I'd do the Dragic deal because the CAP is rising and we could still build a contending roster.

I understand your comparison, though. I looked at Lin's statistics last year and was so excited to have him on board and thought he could develop a nice niche here based upon what I had seen; boy, was I wrong. :(

Whoa whoa...did you just say Dragic is better than Lowry? It's not even close bro. Lowry has been a top 5 PG this year AND last year...dragic has never even been a top 10 Pg ever in his career.

Even WITH the increase in the cap, this is an outrageous amount for Dragic. Lakers are desperate right now, but not THAT desperate. I hope Houston gets him so we never have a shot at overpaying Dragic. Give me a solid rebuild and in a few years with a higher cap, we can make a serious run at some FA's and have 3-4 young guys that are already studs playing on rookie scale contracts...THAT's how you rebuild and reload for another title run.

It's not the end of the world if the Lakers overpay for Dragic because the situation they're in, they're likely going to have to overpay someone to come here at all.

But 20 million? That's just too much. I'm fine with them outbidding other teams. Other team won't go over maybe 15 million tops, so if the Lakers wanted to flex their muscle and pay 16 or something, that's I suppose understandable.

No reason to go up to 20 though which is why I know this rumor is fake. The Lakers CAN give out a max deal that doesn't mean we are just throwing them around willy-nilly.

The projected cap for next season is slated to be at 67.4 million per Larry Coon.

The following year it is projected conservatively outlined by the link; grant the link is just a projection and speculative at the very least.

    http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports....-salary-caps-under-new-national-tv-contracts/

If there is no 'smoothing' process, and the camp jumps to the projected figure in the link, Dragic would fall in between 13 to 14 million a year; still, some wouldn't even sign at that salary; I would. Either way, we'll see how it plays out...

In addition to trodgers statistical comparison to Lin, also keep in mind that Dragic is also an awful defender too. Not a 2-way player.

For the right price (10 million max), I'd be okay with him. Otherwise, let somebody else grab him.

Suns wanna trade Isaiah Thomas instead of Goran. They wanna keep Goran and balance the guard heavy team. Lakers should trade Hill and Sacre for Isaiah Thomas and Plumlee. They need a back up PF.

If Dragic could be had for 10 million, I'd say go for it. But otherwise no thanks.

I'd take IT! His salary is pretty good for his production - he's at just under 7 million a year. That's not bad. He reminds just a little bit of Nick the Quick. He has an attitude and I like that. Drafted second round, chip on his shoulder. He's a player. Huge upgrade to what we've had for what seems like forever. He's the opposite of Lin in terms of mindset. He's super aggressive and I dig that. He always lights us up.

yeah, I wanted Thomas over lin this summer. and yes, I would have foregone the 26th pick in the draft for Thomas at 6 per.

I'd really like to see Thomas and Jimmy Butler in Purple and Gold next season. IT/Butler/Kobe/Randle/...

Would we become a contender? nope, but it'd be a step in the right direction. Lets make a trade happen.
