Since we have threads about watching and listening to stuff, I figured books/comics etc. deserve their own thread as well. I'm currently reading George Martin's The Armegeddon Rag. It is not as good as I hoped it would be (Martin being one of my favorite writers), but it's a fine read. I expect to finish it this week and will probably go back to the Wild Cards series. What do you guys read? Any recommendations are welcome
Currently reading Gone Girl, not because of the movie but a guy in my office recommended it. It's okay so far, hoping it gets better as I get deeper in.
It's really good keep on reading! I'm looking for the next book to read after just finishing this one. I tried reading the Game of Thrones books and I just can't do it. Not that great to me.
Same here, although I managed to squeeze in Wool by Hugh Howey this summer. It's actually above-average if you are into the dystopian sci-fi genre.
Do empirical articles count... But, I have been meaning to read some of George Martin's work...I am afraid he will suck me in though.
"Articles for class" = stuff I'm teaching or researching. Spending a lot of time on Plato's Republic right now, so I've read a few interesting articles on it lately. Just read Ovid's Metamorphoses (book i) today. But that's all for school.
Every read counts in my great reading thread Martin's books are not the worst drug out there. If you haven't tried any of his works yet, start with some of the short stories. The Sandkings would be my personal recommendation. BTW, I just finished armagedon rag and it was decent, I liked the ending and all.... But it was one of George's worse books IMO. I did not find the book I was looking for in the book store and will probably have to check out something else from my collection
I spent June 2013 - April 2014 reading through the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series (Game of Thrones) but I haven't really read anything since then. I want to read the Dunk and Egg novelas, but I have no idea where to find them.
Dunk and Egg novellas are great. Easy read compared to the ASOIAF, but there is a lot of Westeros history in these books. You should definitely try to find them.
@Battle Tested20 & @TIME I got Eleven Rings as a gift last year - and I PLOWED through it. Read two chapters a night. Such a great read. Phil's a great writer but getting a glimpse into his framework of building a team and playing basketball is freaking awesome. He's just a great mind and you learn about his philosophies on leadership and spirituality. He spends more heart and pages on the Bulls I believe, but it is so damn good. If ya'll were around for the 90's Bulls runs, this book will have even more added value. I'll read it again soon - too much good to take away.
What other NBA books out are worth reading? Shaq had a book right? I like reading accounts of former players/coaches to get a glimpse into the anecdotes of their careers. I know Phil had Sacred Hoops and some others - I read the "Last Season" as well. But looking for more of documentary type b-ball books with those anecdotes. Any thoughts?
The last two sports books I read were Derek Fisher's book "Character Driven" and Jackie McMillan's book about the Bird/Magic rivalry. Both were very good.
started reading the way of kings by brandon sanderson, about 1/2 way through it. i like his writing style a lot, he's the guy who took over the wheel of time when robert jordan passed away
One of the reasons why I want to watch the Knicks progress this year is because of Phil's latest book Eleven Rings. Like you mentioned @Chillbongo there are so many insightful stuff in there about how he built teams and brought on along on the ride. The journey to the Rings I believe was more satisfying for Phil than the actually rings themselves.
check this out: http://grrm.livejournal.com/365715.html I have read three of the novels (for some reason they were published in Poland without the illustrations, which made it faster) and I liked all of them a lot. If you're a fan of the Ice and Fire series, you won't be disappointed
