Durant I'm sure is going to take less than the max so they can try to keep as many people around. Steph will get the max I'm sure. Dude has been on the discount rate the last few years. I also don't think it will be an instance where the GSW FO will have to ask Durant to take less, he'll be the one to offer.

But overall, YES, GSW will have a huge luxury tax the next 4-5 years if not more.

Like I've said, Durant AND Curry will have to take significantly less to keep the crew around. We'll see if it happens. I doubt it, but if they can get 2-3 more years of what they have now, it'll be worth the money.

In two years Klay is a FA.

Klay's Pop can play the same role in bringing Thompson to Lakers that Kobe will play in bringing in Paul George. :Jacksnicker: FA's want to be here now, right? :Magic Brows:

There already was a report (not sure how reliable) that KD would be willing to take less.

I know. How much less? Enough to pay Iguodala and Livingston? Enough for Curry to get the max? Enough for Klay to get his raise in two years?

Durant is due for the 35% max which starts around 34 million. Curry is due for a big pay increase after taking the discount rate before, his max is 30% which starts around 29 million. The cap hold for Livingston is just under 11 million and the cap hold for Iguodala is 16.7 million. I think both Livingston and Iguodala can easily find that on the open market for at least one year, probably more.

Altogether that's 90.7 million (over the cap) in just those four players.

If the Warriors keep just the other contracts they have, they're at 129 million already. That doesn't include bringing back guys like West, McGee (who is almost assuredly going to get paid elsewhere this summer), Clark, Pachulia, and Matt Barnes. That is obviously way, way over the luxury tax threshold of 111 million. Since they're over 5 million dollars over the threshold, they're going to have to pay up to 2.5 dollars per dollar over the threshold. They'd land probably somewhere near 140 million meaning they'd pay up to 4.75 million dollars to the dollar.

Trying to keep everyone around this summer they could potentially owe between 70-90 million dollars in luxury tax. That's before they have to increase the pay for Klay in two years.

Something is going to give eventually. I'm not naive enough to think the Lakers are a legitimate destination for Klay Thompson today, but he will almost assuredly look at the FA market in two years to see if he can get paid. In fact, I wouldn't be outright shocked if they traded him this summer in order to avoid having to pay him.

If they all take significantly less... they'll still have to pay the repeater and it'll still get very, very costly. It's possible the Warriors are the team to buck the trend, but nobody has been willing to pay that much as a team or take that little as a player for a long period of time in order to win titles.

    Well said.

And that's exactly why it's not as far out an idea that we might be able to trade for Klay as people might think.

The Warriors know they can't afford all those stars if they are all Maxed. Of that group, I'd argue that Klay is the odd man out, if for no other reason than the timing of when his contract is up.

If the Warriors do want to trade, what would they want? Young talented players that can grow on the team that are on friendly contracts.... and the fact that they already have a few years of experience playing in a similar system under Luke, the Warriors former Assistsnt Coach, wouldn't hurt.

Also, if this scenario doesn't play out early, I think Moz/Deng's contracts would be close to expiring right around the time Klay's is, so GS would only be on the hook for a year before all that money freed up. So some combination of Dlo, Randel, Deng, for Klay might get it done.

It might not ever happen, but the concept is not pipe.

I'll move this suggestion to this side but I suggested moving Deng and the #28 or Deng a future protected 1st/future 2nds to the Kings in exchange for a couple of their expiring deals.

    Why the Lakers do it:
    - Shed Deng's contract
    - Shed the guaranteed money of a 1st round pick
    - Free time/space for other players
    - Do we need more reasons? C'mon.

    Why the Kings do it:
    - They're waaaaay under the salary floor, let along the salary limit. If you don't include Afflalo (non-guaranteed), Tolliver (non-guaranteed), and Rudy Gay's impending opt-out the Kings sit at just 42,283,532 million dollars. They need 40 million just to reach the salary floor. With their incoming 1st rounders, they're looking at somewhere near 55 million and still in need of a lot of salary with nobody incoming in FA. Why not spend on a veteran who can help the team and literally can't escape their clutches like Rudy Gay is about to?
    - We're offering them another young piece to add to their shaky young core. The owner is very much enamored by Hield, but nobody else is really anymore. He looks average at best. Cauley-Stein looks okay, but he's got a limited ceiling. Labissiere showed real promise, but he was woefully inconsistent.
    - They need a culture reset. For his faults, Deng is a good person. They need good people in Sacramento to wash out the Boogie smell.

I'd love to pick up Afflalo in that deal.

Wow, both have some rather huge flaws but they are their cornerstones at the moment.

If we can get rid of Deng or Mozgov somehow then this offseason will be a success.

I would offer Deng and #28 for anything that is less expensive for less years than Deng.

I'll look at a list. There might be some S&T options. But the one that stands out off the top of my head is one we have discussed here for months: Rudy Gay. He's got one year left.

We probably have the resources to dump Deng, Mozgov, and add some quality players now. We might ve able to get good enough to make it obvious to PG that he should come here. But we should be willing to consider moving all the pieces that don't fit in order to get that done.

Would rather overpay one of these guys than the ones we have.
