No because I'm keeping myself busy. But later tonight and tomorrow.... I'm gonna need some liquid courage.

No. As usual I'm getting that doubt creeping in that I'll even be able to watch, some dread in the pit of my stomach. But, also as usual, I know I'll be right there watching and putting myself through that torture yet again.

We're still owed damn it. I have a feeling we'll get the number two again which I'm more than okay with. LETS GO NOW!

Hoping Rob/Magic arent like mitch, in sense that ince the team is good again they're not trading away 1st picks as if they're a disease or something. I remember when teams were giving up assets for expiring, we were like the 1st team to attach a 1st pick to get rid of expiring (sasha trade)

I'm surprisingly okay but that could change. I'm not expecting to get the pick though.

i'll try to watch, but i'm prepared for disappointment. in either case, i think the discourse on the forums should improve after we know our draft position. so many unknowns right now.

I hate how the talking heads on ESPNLA710 are saying that it will be an apocalypse if we lose the pick. Yes it will be terrible and a waste of a season AND we will lose the 2019 first round pick too, but its not the end of the world. We still have a bunch of promising young kids and cap space to play with. Sure our rebuild will take a year or two longer but things can be a lot worst. We could be the Nets, no assets at all and all the losing seasons amounts to the draft pick going to Boston. The way I look at it, if we lose the pick, we will finally start paying off the debt and moving on.

There are many reasons to keep the pick. 1) obviously it's a high level prospect 2) obviously we keep the 2019 pick but also 3) if we lose the pick, that means 2018 is unprotected which might encourage the team to tank again to make sure they get a high quality kid next year. There's also 4) a high pick this year can be used as trade bait and 5) it's hard to tell if/when we'll be in this position to get a high quality prospect again.

Still though, you're right. If we lose the pick, we just suck it up and move forward. We're going to pay for this issue either this summer or next and we'll just have to figure it out when we do. There are some small silver linings that can be taken from this:

    1) we have a 1st this year which means if we keep our 2018 pick it can be traded for assets as long as we net a 2019 pick somehow.
    2) we wouldn't have that 5+ million on our cap space.
    3) if it's unprotected we can just feel relaxed knowing we'll get a Top 10 pick probably next season instead of forcing the issue.
    4) there's some high level prospects coming out next summer too, really talented kids.
    5) it doesn't seem like there's an obvious transcendent talent in this draft, so if we lose the pick it's not the end of the world

... but let's keep the pick.

eh, the way i see it, if we keep the pick, we're going to suck for three more years, and if we lose the pick, we're going to suck for three more years. there's just no quick way out of all this (thanks, stern). we've piled up three solid lottery picks of late...and we're absolutely terrible. a 4th isn't the magic balm. let's try to lay a foundation: evaluate who we have, try to dig out from under mozdeng, and allow luke to help shape something sustainable that won't take hold for another few years.

if we lose the pick, we're almost assured to get a top 5 pick next year, and by then, maybe mozdeng can be moved in exchange for taking on larger, shorter term salary. then maybe there's a light at the end of the tunnel that's not a train.

Honestly, one of the biggest reasons I want to keep the pick is to not have to listen to a million hot takes about how horrible it is that we didn't keep the pick. I will probably have to just avoid sports talk for a week or so if we lose it.

    I don't think it's that complicated.

If we're fortunate enough to land top 3:

    • We lose 0 lottery picks
    • The 1st to Orl. becomes a 2nd.
    • We gain a ton of trade value, as we'd be able to package 17/19 or 18/20 1st rounders.

    If not:

    • We lose 2 lottery picks over the next 3 years
    • We lose the ability to trade any 1st rounder until 2021 (unless we acquire another 1st)

I REALLY hope we get to keep this pick. There's huge gain/loss potential riding on this.

Those two things are contradicting and I think the whole point of my post was the 2nd thing...

Keeping the pick is better than losing it, but losing it doesn't mean we're screwed either. That's the whole point of my post.
