Can someone please copy / paste what was said if you're able to see the story? I get a page with a bunch of stuff on the far left margin but no actual article. It's not related at all.

didn't watch, but if he said he wants people in shape, i agree. i think that's been an ongoing issue for randle and russell.

I can't be certain, but I think Zenmaster might be referring to the story about Jerry West and not the body fat comments. While I don't agree with the notion that we're doomed if we choose to try and move forward without Jerry West, at least that seems like the more likely of the two stories that he's reacting to.

I mean, that's silly if he's upset that Magic wants our players to come into camp in shape...unless Zenmaster is being sarcastic at an unexpected moment.

There were very few people on the team with less than 10% body fat. I know Calderon and Robinson were there. I think one other person was. Most people were in the 10-15 range.

Zubac was higher than 18%. :D

He basically just said he wants everyone back in shape, ideally less than 10% body fat. He said the Lakers are on the right track and they're excited about the direction they're going. He said Jeanie and himself are dedicated to bringing a ring back in a few years.

I maintain 10-12% year long and I can tell you that most people on the team are slightly over 10% right now. Doesn't make them chubby actually, but they are certainly not ripped. Especially considering those are very young professional athletes.

Magic is under 10% for sure. :Magic2:

Beautiful command by Magic. Raising the bar and forcing the youth to step up. The previous regime couldn't say that and be taken seriously.
Looking forward to a non-stop upward trend going forward.

Oh, I was being absolutely, heart-attack-level serious. That's a moronic statement to make. 7 - 8%, without distinction for player's health, age, development process -- is a ridiculous number to achieve and maintain.

It shows that Magic: a) doesn't know what he is talking about b) doesn't leave this stuff to professional nutritionists and trainers and c) is exactly the kind of manager I feared he'd be.

Even if somehow, 7 - 8% is the target, why? Was our problem conditioning? Why is this the first thing that comes our of our Head of Whatever?

Before any of you jump and start defending our precious HoF, who himself have never been anywhere near 15% (with an exception of possibly one season), IMO, try to translate this kind of statement to your current working environment.

Also, yes, I dislike Magic the non-basketball person. It's not a secret.

And finally, and this deserves its own post, this is precisely the machismo posturing Byron would do. It's a tiny step above foxholes and fistfights. All this "they need to be shaken up" b*******.

A normal, non-idiotic or non-amateur person, would say:

    1. We have a specific individual short-term summer plan in place for all our players
    2. These range from working on long-range spot up shooting to post-up plays, based on long-term development plan
    3. In all cases, we've included a personally tailored workout plan, synced with our training stuff and nutritionists

@trodgers would probably come along and support this (come on, T...., please?).

@ZenMaster You realize Magic and Rob did give each player 3 things to work on over the summer, but also said they need to come into camp at that body fat ratio?

I do. Besides the point, though.

There is absolutely no justification for 7 - 8% body fat. Ingram getting to that level would f***ing kill him.

It is individual. It depends on an extreme variety of things. It also is not necessarily something that is beneficial for basketball.

I can't speak on how healthy that is. That's probably in @therealdeal realm of knowledge.

While I too had serious misgivings about Magic taking over, these are the best basketball playing athletes in the world. It doesn't sound outlandish to me.

When I was in college, I got my BMI tested and I was at 8%. It wasn't all that difficult. I wasn't a slight dude either. Ingrams number on that board is actually shocking. How is that string bean almost 10%

IMO Dlo and Randle especially always looked gassed this season.

I have no problem with demanding they come into camp in much better shape.

Let's review the facts, shall we?

    1. You and Karacha are both at or below 10%, but are not world level athletes (AFAIK :))
    2. Most of the world level athletes on the Lakers are above 10%, even freaks like Clarkson
    3. Kobe, who most here would call the most dedicated athlete they've seen, has been around 10 - 13% most his career (13% in later parts IIRC)

This shows me that BFP is either:

    1. very individual
    2. wildly inaccurately measured

Either way you slice it -- it would then be a poor metric of fitness or workload, until a normalized value is established

    EDIT: just for fun...
