From a pure coaching standpoint. MDA is better. But MDA is also a stubborn SOB. It's "his way" or the highway.

Byron is a bit stubborn too, but at least he's made some adjustments. Moving Davis to the starting center position, moving Hill to PF, and making the move to bring Lin and Booz off the bench where their lack of defense and inconsistency doesn't hurt us so much. He still has a hard on for Ronnie Price, but Brown and MDA had the same thing for Steve Blake, so I'm not too surprised. He's also managed to get Wes Johnson to play D, shoot 3's, and leave decision-making to others.

Byron's lack of X and O's can be countered by kicking Mark Madsen to the curb and bringing in real assistants like Eddie Jordan, Nate McMillan, Lawrence Frank, or even JVG. This requires Byron to let go of his ego and the Lakers FO to pay a little more $$$ for a better coaching staff.

But Madsen danced. And sometimes he plays defense in practice.

Well Byron sure is getting a lot of heat, and deservedly so but I've seen improvements over the last week.

We're playing a better style of basketball on offense. More ball movement and player movement. Kobe's still running the show but is passing early and often. The lineup adjustments have worked well as we all know.

On defense the effort looks great, and that's really half the battle. Seems as if Byron is preparing these guys mentally to play deliberate defense and it's looking better.

Nothing wrong with what you're saying but JVG would be pipe to leave his cush job for this. IMO.

JVG has told radio interviewers that if he left broadcasting, it would likely be for an assistant coaching gig.

He probably won't leave, but you never know for sure.

As Brian Shaw is on the hot seat and maybe fired soon, we could bring him over ... would definitely help our strategy and Xs and Os.

Agreed on the assistant coaches. Phil was a good, but never great x and o's guy. He had excellent assistants though.

I was thinking that more and more ex coaches will stay on T.V for the greater security it offers (seemingly?). Unless you offer them Mike Brown money and years guaranteed etc. I thought JVG would want to be a head coach or nothing. I guess it is a stage of life thing where he is comfortable, and feels he could contribute but does not need the full reigns.

I had this dream that Jeff and Stan VG were our two co-head coaches. They were conjoined like the two headed monster from Sesame Street and were always arguing with each other. They strangled each other by halftime and were replaced by a two headed monster of Mike D'Antoni and Mike Brown (think of the B grade Schlock horror 'The Thing with Two Heads). Needless to say I woke up in a cold sweat.

Byron, with able assistants calling plays and fine tuning minutes substitutions, could make up for his weaknesses. Equally it could build a quality base for our next head coach. Though honestly at this point it should be noted that any assistant that is too good will be poached for a head coaching job on another franchise. I think this could be a consideration when you see how fluid the market is. I don't know about Brian Shaw but I trust the endorsements I have heard around here for him as an Assistant Coach (Denver fans seem to hate him - scape goating).

Byron has his faults and has definitely had me scratching my head at multiple points this season.

But, at some point he has to get some credit for putting a team out there that keeps fighting despite playing against more talented teams most nights. His faith in guys like Price and Wes has started to pay dividends.

Biggest thing to me is that this team could have easily folded up tent and look like the Knicks out there. We were experiencing a ton of issues including guys complaining about touches and minutes, but we are weathering that storm.

Give Scott some players and I think we will be alright in the future.

For everything D'Antoni wasn't, he was knowledgeable about the game. He knew his stuff. He just didn't want to have to listen to anyone else or change his mind on things.

Byron might not know the ins and outs of coaching, but he can be a good head coach. The HC really at this point is about inspiring and leading and getting guys to buy into a concept and mentality. We're about defense, rebounding, and then flashy scoring. That's what Byron is trying to build and I can appreciate that.

Like revgen said though, that means finding coaches that DO know the Xs and Os and can draw up plays that make sense. We need coaches who will remind Byron about timeouts, clock management, fouls, etc. If Van Gundy ever wanted to be an assistant, then hell yeah I'd take him. I'd take a bunch of our old assistants actually. Ettoire Messina, Eddie Jordan, Nate McMillan, Jeff Van Gundy, even Mike Brown as an assistant. The dude was a hard worker even if he sucked as a head coach.

I'd keep Mark Madsen though. The guy is earnest, works hard, and can lay a good foul in practice and set the tone!

How do you guys think MDA is a better coach when he literally ignored the team playing any D, and his amazing offense consisted of a PG running around like a chicken with its head cut off while the other 4 guys stood at the 3 point line?

Steve Nash was MDA's Xs & Os.

Say what you will about Byron, but he has this team playing hard and keeping it close with the best teams in the west. MDA wasn't able to do that at all.

They are definitely playing better defense and getting after it. Even in losses we often look better than the run and chuck (we all know going nowhere) game plans of MDA in wins last year.

Not only that, Damfony had Jodie Meeks playing SF, Wesley Johnson playing PF for no logical reason and had Steve Blake playing SG. We would routinely get abused on the defensive end. Watching Steve Blake attempting to guard Klay Thompson and seeing Wesley Johnson get switched on to Marc Gasol was infuriating. Also, Damfony had no idea how to use big men and alienated all of the big men. His success in Phoenix was due to having prime Steve Nash, prime Shawn Marion, and prime Amare Stoudemire. Give Phil or Pop that Phoenix talent and they would have gotten a championship out of them.

Let's not forget Kobe taking upon himself to take over the offense due to Damfony's incompetence during the 2013-2014 season and voila, we started winning.

I've had my issues with Scott's decisions but he's not as bad as Damfony.
