Is there any player who has ever been asked to change his game more in terms of regularity and overall shape than Kobe? And just when he returns from exhaustion and finishes with a 32 minute triple double in a surprising W, coach is like, "Shoot more." C'mon, B Scott.
I actually get it though. Byron really is about what he hopes "possibly" can get the team to perform better as a team. How many times over the years when Kobe is playing really good team ball like this have we felt that there are some readily available good shots he tends to go overboard in passing up. If they are easily there (and if Kobe is hitting with a normal % that game) go ahead and take the shot right as it presents itself. (without 8 pump fakes) Will keep defenses more honest with that perfect balance. And guys will keep moving.
Agreed but this is how Kobe has always been. He either goes in to scoring mode or facilitator mode. There's rarely an inbetween. He's very one track minded. Regarding Kobe playing PG. I still dont really like it. He's not a pg. He can do it but he's very turnover prone. And even when he's playing the pg facilitator mode, he's still extremely ball dominant. We have to find ways to play Kobe off ball more. I still believe he's an elite scorer if used correctly, in his spots. Not 1 on 1 like he use to be able to do. Problem is, Kobe has never really played off ball in a non triangle system. He doesnt really know how to without a good coaching scheme which Im not sure Byron is good enough to implement.
Get on the block, Kobe. He can facilitate from there, but he can conserve the energy of having to fend off guys dribbling the ball up court.
Yeah better than bringing the ball up often....but even there he is always banging hard with a defender trying to deny him. Is what it is though, he's always said he likes the contact.
You can't hide a guy on the court - especially not with our overall talent level on the court at any time. What you can do is put people in positions to be successful. Asking him to bring the ball full court for 30+ minutes a game is silly, because he's then asked to be the primary ball handler, facilitator, scorer, and it's simply asking too much. The reduction in minutes is great, but if you want the most out of Kobe, you have to allow him to be less frustrated (so fewer TOs) so he'll work on D, and you have to put him into a position where he can read the defense and react to it - so he does need touches. And there's good reason to give him the ball so much - teams do react to him, and he tends to make good decisions when he's not exhausted.
Kobe just had a great game. We should appreciate the way he did that and chill a bit before we immediately turn around and nit pick about his shot attempts. I know he's had a difficult time finding that ideal balance more often than not, but geez, that game against Denver isn't one to nit pick.
This clown doesn't even triple double and doesn't even hit a triple teamed three to tie the game as time expires. Ship his a** out.
very encouraged by what I'm seeing, but I didn't like seeing Kobe bring the ball up so much. I don't see that being a good plan.
I 'll take whatever plan Kobe's comfortable with as long as he's getting other guys involved and shooting more efficiently within acceptable minutes. These guys are having fun out there and Kobe's having fun... In triple double territory and it looks easy for him. You can see the difference. They're more competitive on both ends of the floor and playing well against some good teams. Our young guys are getting great experience and putting up good numbers...best basketball for Hill, Davis and Price and even Booz is solid and energized coming off the bench. This is the kind of team basketball I've been waiting for this season. Hope it continues.
That was such a good decision for the game winner to take it into the paint and shoot the short hook. That's probably a 75% shot for him compared to a 20% fall away 3.
