    1. Are they accomplishing that task?
    2. Of course we'd rather have that - but we don't. This scenario is, however, better than many others that could have transpired. At $8M, he's expiring, and we could - worst case scenario - stretch him to 2.3M over three seasons. That's not much of a difference in cap flexibility.

The ultimate goal was to unload Lou for a 1st. Ground rule double. Magic had a perfect 4 for 4 day. Leading the league in on-base percentage, hits, average, and RBIs. Not a bad first day in the big leagues.

This is a fairly frustrating conversation. You've suggested that expiring contracts aren't worth "as much as they used to be." Whatever that means. I've just given you an example where two expiring contracts were used to make a huge deal happen. You counter with, "That's to make salaries match." Yes. That's the point. That's one of two reasons expiring contracts are used - to match contracts or to create cap space.

We're not hoping that someone will comp us a pick for Brewer. We might be able to include Brewer's expiring contract in a big deal. That's why I mentioned Boogie. Am I missing something?

Naturally this happens when I am at the gym and not at work, so I am late to the party. Without reading any of the prior responses, as a vocal supporter of trading Lou for a 1st rounder for a while now, obviously my first reaction was "hooray". The Rockets, the gift that keeps on giving (See Jeremy Lin trade that got us the 1st round pick that became Nance). As for Brewer, most likely the Lakers were going to get back a salary - hence my ideas included guys like Sessions/Ish Smith. He's a decent player and getting Brewer further makes trading Young make sense as they play the same position, except Brewer is singed into next season making re-signing Young even less likely. Obviously I wish the Lakers got a 1st round pick from a team with a worse record but in the end, I am thrilled with this move and glad the Lakers pulled the trigger.

...a post about Williams preferred the Rockets and was accommodated which was good of us. Who knows if the Charlotte or Washington offers weren't as attractive. They are playoff bound teams as well.

There is some stuff on twitter floating around suggesting that Lou wanted to come to Houston, and Magic honored that.

Pelinka also (formerly) representing Harden and Gordon also makes me think that we had an open line to Houston. Most indications suggest that this was the best deal out there IMO...

Good for the Lakers to accommodate Lou Williams and send him to a strong team.

If the Lakers don't trade Calderon, they should waive him so he can sign with a contender. While I'm sure people here don't want to see that because it might mean he lands on Cleveland and no one wants to help Cleveland, it's doing good by Calderon.

Other players will see the Lakers doing things like this and it buys good will. And Magic/Rob/West can sell that in pitch meetings. "We care about what our players want".

Most definitely. I'm glad we sent him to a contending team. Lou was a fun player to watch and a first class professional. Wish him nothing but the best. Will miss seeing 'The Voodoo that Lou Do' with his ability to draw shooting foul with that black magic he has.

This is a multi-billion-dollar business, and business comes first.

If Lou wanted to go to Houston, that just happened to be convenient. These guys get paid millions to play a game, so the owners of the franchise are not going to take personal preferences into consideration in the bigger picture.

Good business isn't always easy, but Business has to come first. Especially when you suck

Agree on all counts...the small gust of wind heard are the ladies of L.A. sighing Williams is gone. :) I really enjoyed watching his scoring outbursts with nary a showboat moment instance. What EddieEddie stated, this speaks goodwill about our front office. Players talk amongst themselves and will take note...

...reminds me a bit of the Jones to Charlotte for Rice trade. Not the same type of players of course.

Eddie Jones was my favorite player, hence the origin of my username. Used to love going to games and chanting "Eddie Eddie"

A piece of me died the day he was traded.

Then the Lakers went on to win 3 titles in a row and I got over it.

Loved that guy too. Miami traded Jones and they went on to win the title. Cat could never catch a break...

He was my personal fave back in the day too. I'm sure somebody here remembers this; there is a rookies squad on NBA Jam for SNES, which Eddie was a part of. If you beat every team in the league, the rookies get dispersed to their respective teams. I beat the game because I was hell bent on playing with the Jones/Van Exel tandem.

Unfortunately they're not that good in the game :D

Eddie was my favorite Laker player at that time, too! I thought that was your reference. Good stuff!
