The real question is, will there be any parking lot rants from Kobe this time?

I figured it was something like this, which is why I wasn't mad we didn't get Rondo, just resigned to it. No way should we have given up our highest draft pick and best prospect since Bynum for a guy who is a free agent this summer. That means the C Bags would have had the 6th and 7th picks in the last draft, F them.

I am starting to think that Rondo requested to come here. I think he wanted to play with Kobe in a big market city. Just a hunch. I'd even wager that we still have a shot at Rondo during FA if things don't go as planned in Dallas...

I think that's possible too. He met with Kobe and a couple weeks later their narrative changed on him. Maybe he didn't request ONLY the Lakers, but I think certainly he showed he was willing to leave. Then the C Bags decided to move him and sent him to a spot that would be good for them and put him in a situation we wouldn't likely get him.

If things in Dallas turn sour for any reason, I'm sure we'll be on the list of destinations. I think the Lakers will also do whatever they can to get him anyway. Another option to watch out for: we might trade for a guy like Deron this summer if we can't land anyone in FA. He'd be an expiring contract and would bring a talented player back into our lineup. It's not like health is a concern for us obviously if we're making moves to get Rondo.

Re- Randle for Rondo: There were at least a few people saying we should trade Randle for Rondo this last summer. I remember that specifically because I disagreed with it so adamantly. I'm happy to see people on the other side of the fence now. Randle for Rondo is a terrible deal for us.

Oh, I agree. There were some things that stood out too me in thinking he requested to come here

    - The C Bags and Lakers had initial preliminary dialogue about a Rondo trade; although it's not 'clear' which team initiated the call.
    - After that happened, we had the Kobe/Rondo breakfast in the beginning of the month.
    - Both teams had a 'mutual interest' in getting a deal done for obvious reasons; I know the Lakers wanted a 'name', to improve the team, get another great player to play next to besides Kobe, and Ainge wanted assets...nevertheless, these teams in past circumstances have never had a 'mutual interest' to do anything with one another. I can't even remember the last transaction they've had between the two teams.

An interesting quote from Cuban at the press conference when Dallas acquire Rondo; he's still in the business of attempting to 'convince' Rondo to sign long-term. It's not a sure thing he re-signs if things go awry or meet his expectations. At that point, if that happens I think he'll explore his options during Free Agency.

"Obviously, we wouldn't give up picks if we didn't think it was long term," Cuban said. "We're past the days of rent-a-player. We want him to be here for a long time and we want to earn his desire to stay here."

Our chances may still be minimal at best, but I wouldn't be surprised if he spurned Dallas at all. I'd love it.

August 6, 2004: The Boston C Bags traded Chucky Atkins, Jumaine Jones and Chris Mihm to the Los Angeles Lakers for Rick Fox, Gary Payton and a 2006 1st round draft pick (Rajon Rondo was later selected).

It almost came full circle if Ainge didn't try to screw us out of Randle

Glad we didn't give up Randle, would've been a bad trade.

Hells to the NO to giving them Randle. Lakers fans would have put Mitch's wand where the sun don't shine.

I'm glad the Lakers didn't cave and give them Randle. I'd rather try our luck in pursuing Rondo in FA.
