On a night when Kobe couldn't hit the broadside of the barn and just wasn't able to get separation, we needed a better shot at the end of the game. Ellington was hot, Lin was hitting well, too. Tough for me to say I wanted someone other than Kobe to take the last shot, but I did . . . this game.

People were talking Byron/Brown in gametime, figured I'd post my thoughts here.

Hard to say between Brown and Byron. Brown had better Kobe, Pau, Bynum, MWP, Blake, Barnes, Fisher, Sessions for a bit, and they went to the playoffs. Byron has crap. He does use Kobe like Brown did though, Brown turned Sessions into Fisher and made him bring the ball up court and give it to Kobe. Byron does the same with Lin a lot. Then again I remember Brown's offense was a joke, where I think Byron's is at least ok unil the end of the game where it falls apart when Kobe is asked to do everything. I do think they're pretty much the same coach overall though.

As far as 'Antoni, he had a still great Kobe, Dwight, Pau, MWP, Blake, Hill, and Jamison and we got into the playoffs by one game with Kobe killing himself to get us there. I think 'Antoni sucks as much as Brown and Byron, he just had Nash and a really good roster to make him look good in Phoenix, plus an offense that was sort of new at the time it took teams a while to adjust to.

I wanted to post something I posted in May (on another Lakers board):

People disagreed with me regarding Cleveland; that's fine. Maybe they did suck, but the fact is that Scott has a REPUTATION as a defensive coach, but his teams haven't been good defensively in a decade. We should have known that.

trodgers, in the same way that Brown impressed Jimmy with his notebook or whatever it was, it's not hard for me to believe Scott impressed our FO with his charisma. That, and the team saw no absolutely great coach available, so they went with a beloved old Laker to appease fans. His talk about knowing what it means to have Laker pride, those Laker legends showing up at his introductory press conference, they seemed cool at the time, now they look like stuff to make the fans calm down or feel nostalgic.

Where are those guys now? Magic wants us to lose, haven't heard from Kareem. We don't see Worthy or Coop bashing Byron like they did 'Antoni, it's almost like he doesn't have to have accountability because he's everyone's buddy. This year it's roster not being good, or the players not playing hard enough on D. Hardly seems fair. Does seem smart though, fans don't wanna hate on Byron, they are giving him a pass, and they know he isn't going anywhere after all that fuss about his hire and with not wanting to admit a 3rd coaching fail in a row I'm suse.

I plain did not like Brown. Brown was following Phil, and that would have set up most coaches to fail, but I believe we would have been fair to coaches who showed something ( I mean Phil's last year featured a sweep from a Mavs team who turned out to be on a mission). His defensive techniques did not fit or capture personal (he snake oiled stats by slowing down possessions which in turn stole rhythm from our offense), he was glib and unprepared in press conferences. Our offense was ugly, and gave us nothing. We lost eight preseason games ( I know preseason but it was the way we lost. Meta called him out as "all day, every day" . Meta strikes me (well hopefully he never will) as a very loyal cat. The Kobe death stare. That is all. His leaving was a happy happy day (hey he still got paid)

MDA had an effective offense and at least the games were fun. A few wins against the Rockets and Clippers sweetened the pot. He was equally glib and his own worst enemy when it game to the fans and press, (but Brown was worse). i can't forget what he did to Hill, Pau and Kaman, nor that Kobe (and I suspect Mitch and others) had to change his style in order to get us to the playoffs.

Byron is making some changes, but the good he does, will not make up for his deficiencies. We have high expectations (as Laker fans) and unfortunately we have been traumatized by bad coaches, the undeserved loss of Phil, and the injuries of kobe. My main concern is the underuse of our talent and the overeliance on Kobe. They feed on each other and is a vote of no confidence on the rest of our team. A team culture does take time to build, and despite Byron's obvious handicaps (average- below average roster, recovering Kobe - biased ESPN and high fan expectations) I do not have confidence in Scott to build a team. I feel the team respects him, but his actions, particularly in 4th quarters will ultimately lose him the locker room.

I think ex Laker respect of Scott ( by keeping silent) is understandable, but I think the glee with which Magic dug the knife in last year reflects badly on him. Scott is an average to below average coach, whose decisions now are doing him or the franchise no favours. He is here for a few more years, and I do have faith he can improve. All is not lost even in this losing season.

I agree that there is unfair treatment between D'Antoni and Byron, but like you said, the team saw no other better alternative. I'm quite hazy on coaches that were available to us in the summer since it's been a few months, but from what I remembered, there weren't stellar alternatives.

The alternatives were maybe Hollins and Karl, who are not young and we seemed to be looking for a longer term solution, plus I don't think Karl at least wanted to come here anyway. And maybe Blatt and Fisher, and some other unknowns, so they seem to have gone the middle ground in a not very old guy who is very familiar to us all.

I wonder if this came directly from a request Kobe had with Byron. Kobe may not have fitted in with Pops coaching (of course people will tell me everybody does). The reason I say this is Kobe has commented about his respect for the Spurs often. Pop commands the respect of players and has a system. Something which I believe is the one two punch of an elite coach. Maybe Kobe has looked at the way the season is going and is being pragmatic. It is interesting to me talking about Mikes that you could argue Pop is worse to the media (not answering half time questions properly) and Phil did some things that could be not cool (calling out players like Pau in the press or poking him in the chest). The difference is a Brown or a MDA did not have the track record to get away with shabby treatment of a hostile media.

Anyway if the discussion is out there, it means the chances of Kobe be used rationally is out there. Which is the glaring error and chief sticking point we generally speaking have with Scott.

    So pretty much bleh.

I can't see any of those guys controlling Kobe and his minutes. Not even Fisher.

That's good news. The question is will it take another 15-20 games to finally implement this plan?

WTF? Is he out of his mind? I just don't get it. A day or two off is great, but the minutes per game! My God, man!

15-20 games is the standard. Let's revisit this in 2015.

What pisses me off is seeing Kobe playing 38 mins and JC getting 0. This season is a waste anyways so why not rest Kobe and develop the few young talent we have.

Agreed. No way at all that he should have played that many minutes, especially given his recent admissions of tiredness and Byron's talk of sitting him for a game or two.

I'm all for resting Kobe before he breaks and letting Young shoot and Lin run the offense. We have nothing to lose and a draft pick to gain. Kobe's clearly exhausted, to the point that we've never heard him speak like this about it. If the guy who has played through eveything it's possibe to play through is saying he might need rest, is "shouldering a lot", and he doesn't have much of a choice with how he feels, you KNOW he is exhausted. Aside from resting a few games, his minutes have to come down, and he doesn't need to have the ball as much. If we lose because he plays less, so be it, we're losing anyway.
