He'll never reach his shooting potential with that hair.

I'm willing to give him a pass. I can't imagine him being happy after they drafted centers two consecutive years after his rookie season.

Don't know how a trade would work or what his market value is come summer time... but do the Sixers just let him walk? Hard to imagine Philly matching offers as well. If he ends up being any good this is as low as his trade value will ever be

Could you imagine our interior D with Randle and Okafor? And Clarkson and Russell trying to stop penetration? We'd give up 120 points a game ON AVERAGE.

    Then we'll just score 121
    :Noddingyes:

I think they will try to keep Noel as well even though he does have issues with the team. Maybe they try to package their (or our) top pick and Okafor for a decent piece.

Apparently, Jrue Holiday has been playing really well?

Seen it on LG. I haven't noticed. He's a UFA this summer.

imo, jrue holiday has always been really good when healthy. but he has never stayed healthy. risky FA signing in that respect. he'll be pursued heavily, too, it seems. i think philly has (ironically) already identified him as a target, and NO can't afford to lose talent right now, either.

It's more than ideal for them, but I'm not so sure Philly can make that happen so easily. I would guess that Okafor has even less trade value at this point too. Would they rush to match him and be essentially stuck with 3 centers again, this time with a bigger contract for Nerlens? GMs are either gonna poach for Nerlens by the trade deadline or offer a huge contract which Philly just can't blindly say yes to. It's not a poison pill contract offer but it's something to that effect

    Worst to Best
    34. Varejao
    32-t. Yi
    32-t. Sullinger
--None of these guys played even 100 minutes on the season at this point, yet their contracts were worth a max of over 15M combined. (Even where these guys didn't earn the full amount, they're still bad.)

    31. Haslem
    28-t. Amundson
    28-t. Brand
    28-t. Chris Andersen
--All longtime vets, none of them remotely productive.

    27. Nicholson
    26. Wood
    25. Derrick Williams
--Wood's 21, Williams is 25, and Nicholson is 27. None of them are playing much or well, but they have room to grow.

    24. Arthur
    23. Bennett
    22. Smith
    21. Dirk
--Dirk is on a legacy contract. Smith and Arthur are making between 5 and 8M, and they're not playing well. Bennett isn't doing much, but he's on a cheap contract and he's young.

    20. Robinson
    19. Biyombo
    18. Scola
    17. Tolliver
    16. West
--West and Scola were once quite good; now they're both well beyond their primes. Biyombo's huge pay day makes him at best a so-so value for this season, but the may grow into it. Tolliver is a limited player on an 8M contract. Robinson is playing reasonably well for a 25 year old on a 1.1M contract.

    15. Powell
    14. Dudley
    13. Williams
    12. Harkless
--Powell's 25, and he's playing enough minutes to make him a decent value; he's being outplayed hugely by his counterpart, however. Dudley is providing solid value at age 31. Marvin Williams is down a bit from last year, but he's still nearly a top-10 value at his position. Harkless has been steady, is 23, and is good value already.

    11. Humphries
    10. Bass
    9. Ryan Anderson
    8. Gasol
--Four vets, all providing good value for their teams.

    7. Booker
    6. Nene
    5. Leuer
    4. Willie Reed
--Nene and Booker - Nene's older, Booker's pricier, but both are good values. Leuer was a bit of a surprise. He's been very good value and he's 27, so he likely has a few years at peak left. In his 609 minutes, Reed has been excellent. At 1.1M, that's more than anyone can expect.

    3. David Lee
    1-tie. Johnson
    1-tie. Jones
--I campaigned for David Lee. He's making pennies and playing quite well. An excellent addition. James Johnson is making $4M to come off the bench, but he's playing like a starter at 12-5-3. Terrence Jones is making $1.1M, and he has started 9 games. He's averaging 11-6-1.

    I campaigned for Lee also....

Really thought he would help the offense, and a smart player. Unfortunately he's at the same position as Nance and Randle...

lee's on the spurs--they maximize folks.

i mentioned leuer off hand yesterday; didn't realize he was tearing it up.

it depresses me that t. jones may be better than randle in the end.

I think Abeer started that beat, but a few of us fell in line. He's playing well.

As for Lee: he can't defend, but he's a better player than any of our bigs.

It occurs to me that there's another way of thinking of contract value - essentially in terms of buying wins. Working on a formula that reflects this - other than WS.

I fell into that line. Instead we have a 42 year old dude starting at sf for us. And I really believe he is far older than he says. I remember when he was in college he looked like he was close to 30.

Lebron in high school looked like he was someone's uncle dominating out there on the court. I wish Deng aged as well as Lebron did.

As far as Deng goes, on the Scout board when we discussed weeks leading into free agency, I threw out several options at SF. As did a few others. I say 'few" because some were convinced Ingram would start right away, which I maintained would not be the case. Deng didn't come up once. Not because he was deemed unrealistic or wasn't known to be a free agent and slid under the radar but because more so no one wanted him. It was fairly obvious early on the Lakers were not going to land any of the premier options (KD, Batum or even Barnes). But then guys like Bazemore, Parsons and Evan Turner rejected the Lakers. Clearly this was a desperation signing and I wish the Lakers didn't fall for it. The Lakers just needed a stopgap SF to buy Ingram time. They didn't need a "name" player. At this point I pushed for guys like Jared Dudley or Brandon Rush. Won't excite anyone but veteran guys who'd come cheaper, can start and play 24mpg and then slide to the bench without issue when Ingram was ready. I actually found the Deng signing worse than the Mozgov signing back then but it had more to do with the situation. Starting C was a legitimate need as I had no idea Zubac would crush it this early. Starting SF was only a short term need because Ingram was going to be the guy sooner than later.

Anyways it is what it is. Lakers just need to be smart and less desperate this coming offseason. Whether or not they will is a big question mark because a 4th straight awful season and Magic Johnson in the mix leads me to believe they'll be just as desperate as ever.

yeah, they'll be desperate again. but i'm guessing the moz/deng debacle will make them gun shy for long deals to older guys. if you want vets, you can sign really old ones to one-year deals.

and yes, marvin williams and barnes were both high on my list all summer. super bummed the lakers didn't really pursue either and ended up with an albatross instead.

i'm hoping the lakers will be patient this year and try to sign out of the bargain bin later in FA. iirc, this was how they got lou. the mavs have done this to good effect a few times (aminu, monta ellis, useful version of oj mayo).

i'm also still a fan of salary absorption when you're not a FA destination. the lakers did this with lin (though i will say that i wanted isaiah thomas at the time instead); there might be other opportunities like that. but many of them come up early in FA, so you need to abandon the big fish dream to do it.
