C'mon .... Luol has been playing better and starting to find his shot from deep. Has to start somewhere and he's spoken of it and's aware of it and not first time in his career. New systems and coaches and things asked of him have done same in the past. Heading out now to find flame suit.

To be fair, the whole season the person attacking the rim has just dropped a pass off to the man who Moz's supposed to be guarding, but helping off of. There's no helping the helper, especially with Haden-esque Randle in.

Doesnt justify the lack of rim protection....plenty of c do what moz does but still manages at least 1blk, so are we saying guys who are blk leaders dont help off their man?

What I'm saying is that on most teams, the pass isn't as easy to make.

Moz has some advantages the stats don't pick up. The blocked shots stat alone is a highly imperfect way of measuring his rim protection ability. He may not be great at getting a piece of the ball all the time but he IS altering shots and those altered shots miss to a high degree. Per TNC Nylon Calculus 31.1% of blocked shots are rebounded by the shooting team, as compared to 25.4% of all rebounds of missed field goal attempts. A block means little if the other team gets the ball back. Point being most shot blockers don't grab up the ball or direct it out to a teammate, it's knocked out randomly.

Also a lot of what Moz alters is deep in the post. When you compare that to a blocked shot leader like Davis well AD blocked more jumpers away from the basket than just about any other big. The average return on a midrange pull up is about .8 points per shot and it's about 1.5 points per shot on a layup (TNC) so those deep post alterations are valuable.

Moz is also great at tipping the ball out to a teammate on rebounds he can't get the position on without committing a foul so he doesn't always get the rebound stat either though he essentially did just that, rebound.

But I agree about rim help protection, if a penetrator passes off or otherwise avoids that initial move by Moz, there is no help and I think teams have been specifically using that. Randle is no where to be seen usually on those plays.

Thats nice and all but at the end of the day this team is one of the bottom teams as far as defensive metrics are concerned in regards to points in the paint

Perimeter players get beat off the dribble, Moz comes and helps, and no one helps the helper at the rim. Moz doesn't get a lot of blocks because he's mostly known for his veritcality defense, which he's been getting fouls called on him regarding this play a lot more often that I expected.

Seen this a lot this year. Or our perimeter defenders are playing too lightly on an offball player and that player back cuts hard to the rim and we get beat that way

This help the helper and verticality "reasoning" sounds alot like last yr with Hibbert....so for hypothetical sake, say we have a C like Gobert. Does he not avg more than 1blk a game becuase of this help the helper and verticality reasoning?

On defense he is similar to Hibbert (without hitting/falling on the ground) but offensively Moz is a lot better.

    Who's a C "like Gobert"?

There are 46 players this season who are at least 7' tall. Mozgov is averaging more blocks per possession than 12 of them. If he returns to his mean (2.5 per 100 possessions), he'll be 19th best.

BTW, how many of the guys above him do you want? Some of them can't earn minutes on teams - 8 of them have less than 200 minutes (less than half Mozgov's). Some of them aren't defensive players in the least - like Robin Lopez, Tylzer Zeller, Pau, Bender. I mean, Hibbert's higher - do we want him back?
