Right, but you can also make the argument that one of them has not passed that point yet.

FYI, I don't begrudge anyone who voted for Gary Johnson, Jill Stein, or wrote in a candidate; but I do think you can lay out all of Clinton/Trump's positions, go issue by issue, judge them by their character and perceived character and arrive at a value judgement of the individual. I happen to think Clinton came out on top in that regard, but Trump somehow still won and here we are.

    And they'd be wrong.

Yes... I am making this statement as fact, and I don't care if anyone wants to disagree. Neither are admirable human beings, say nothing for president

Trump is our president now. What can he do to win your support? What can he do that would impress you? Do you have a specific things you want from him?

For me, I want the nation to come together. I honestly have no idea how he can do that, but that's #1 for me. #2 is term limits on Congress. #3 is a big combination of low unemployment / high workforce participation / livable wages / better education / huge decrease in the # of people living in poverty / enforcement of existing laws

    Just caught up.

What I've seen here is a few people trying to bridge a gap and a few people unwilling to compromise. From my perspective:

    1. You can try to live with Trump without supporting everything he says. I did not vote for Trump, I do not like Trump, I do not like the fact that he is now the President of the United States. That does not however mean that I cannot support individual ideas that he has run on his platform. What kind of argument is it that just because he's a jerk means he can't have a good idea? That's ridiculous. That's preposterous. There are a few things he's run on that sound like good ideas and the main one I keep coming back to is term limits on Congress. People underestimate the value that would bring to the government in terms of urgency and actually listening to the electorate.

    2. The fundamental misunderstanding of people that voted for Trump is in itself racism. All these liberals that are protesting, rioting, attacking cops, attacking fellow human beings are doing literally the exact same things they trashed Trump supporters for doing. It's racist, xenophobic, profiling and it's disgusting. There's no room or reason for that. These people should be ashamed of themselves.

A large reason why Trump won was selling to the disenfranchised former manufacturing towns hope. You know who ran on that platform 8 years ago right? Those same people that elected Trump this time around elected Obama 8 years ago on more or less the same political promises. Trump promised he'd look after the middle class and Hillary promised 8 more years of Obama. Well a large portion of the country didn't want 8 more years of Obama because there's a lot of people out of work in the middle of the country. Now all those people who voted for Obama are they now racist? Are they now bigots? In 8 years they all decided to join the KKK? Or is it more likely that they're just sick of the status quo that's done them in for decades and are desperate for a change? Maybe try seeing the whole picture instead of painting everyone who voted for Trump with one brush. There are literally hundreds of thousands of people who consider themselves enlightened that are completely blind to the reason Trump won.

You don't have to support something to understand it.

    3. Shouldn't the focus be on trying to build forward? I remember 8 years ago when Obama won the disenfranchised Republicans were told to get in line. Now the shoe is on the other foot and I've seen a lot of people trying to bridge the gap and reach out to the other side. I've seen some willing to cooperate and be adults about the situation. I've seen many more that are so hurt and disillusioned that they're lashing out unnecessarily and being quite as nasty as they assume Trump supporters are.

    4. I blame a lot of this on the Internet and social media. Social media is dominated by liberals and liberal ideas and agendas. Expressing your views opposing those ideas is often met with a wave of criticism. Why do you think the polls looked so lopsided? I mean look at this thread. Most of the people in here who are "defending" Trump are NOT Trump supporters, they're just people who aren't as upset. Varying degrees of support for Trump just in THIS THREAD have lead to arguments between people who respect each other and who, if the situation was approached with calmer heads, would agree on a lot. BUT if you so much as say "yeah but..." about a couple Trump policies, you're again painted with that wide, profiling brush that says you're a Trump supporter and now you're not intelligent enough, you're xenophobic, you're racist, you're part of the problem, and you're supporting a man who hates women and such. Well the world isn't that black and white and to try to force it to be that way is short sided.

    5. Trump is an a**hole and the few people who ARE racist and xenophobic and celebrating his win are stupid and should be brought to light. Trump is a pig, a bad person, and someone I desperately did not want to be President. So was Clinton. I wrote in on my ballot.

I wish more people wrote in. Voting for either of these political parties helps feed the two party political system that's rigged against us to the point we're voting between Trump and Clinton instead of people who actually should be President. It's not a "wasted vote". The only vote that's "wasted" is a non vote. We as Americans had a chance to make a powerful statement by popularly electing a person other than the two party representatives. We have an opportunity every 4 years to make that statement. Every two years we have an opportunity to elect third party representatives into Congress. We need to continue to be the change we want in the country.

    6. Trump is an ***hole and I don't like him. I am not supporting the at times racist and moronic things he said, but standing on the other side of the fence and turning your back on him is a) exactly what Democrats were upset at Republicans about for 8 years and b) shortsided. Even the wrong person can have the occasional right idea. Be deliberate, be discriminating in your judgement, and be thoughtful in your analysis of him and more importantly of the people around you.

Dealing with Russia will be very difficult. Putin is a maniac. I honestly didn't know who would be best dealing with him between Clinton and Trump. Still dont.

I think part of the problem I see is that, people who reject his racism and xenophobia, but like certain parts of his platform; never lead with that in their posts/words so it gives off the wrong impression. Or they do, but they never circle back to it and give specific reasons why overall they find him abhorrent.

Person A: "Trump is a racist/ ***hole, but I like [insert part of platform person likes about Trump]"

Person B: "Trump is a racist because he called all Mexicans murders and rapists"

Person A: "Yea, he never said that"

In the head of Person B: "This guy just said he was a racist, but disagrees with me when I pointed out something Trump said that I find racist. If you do find him racist, then please do tell why."

Person A: Goes on to talk about other reasons why he/she likes Trump:

In the head of Person B: "Okay this ****er loves Trump. Time to go to war with this ***hole"

Honestly though, if he ends up governing like your run of the mill Republican, I can live with that, otherwise this is going to be a dark and miserable 4 years. Either way, as the loyal opposition in a democratic society, progressives in this country should be ready to work with him in areas of common interest, but oppose him vigorously in areas we disagree. We shouldn't expect any less.

I agree with a lot of this.

From the opposite side I'm sure it feels like a given that they shouldn't have to defend themselves as NOT racist especially here where so many of us have known each other for years, but the climate might just be that negative right now.

Thank you for helping provide context here in a contentious topic. We can all be civil about this even if we disagree on some things.

Thanks real, I wanted to make a long post responding to a lot of the discussion over the past few pages but you saved me a lot of time. Pretty much agree with everything you said.

Yeah, maybe it's just because I'm too young to have experienced the Cold War and don't really pay too much attention to international politics, but I didn't get the rhetoric that Russia is some evil empire that we have to vigorously oppose.

Why? It seems to me that we're still in the Cold War which is just a giant circlejerk where we're trying to antagonize Russia to boost our ego as a nation. Because we see them as competition as a military power.

So yeah, I'd rather have a president work with them as opposed to painting then as the boogeyman. Really felt like Hillary was trying to set the stage for a real war with Russia.

Read an article yesterday with a headline along the lines of "Trump to pull US support from Syrian rebels despite their pleas for help."

To me, that sounds like really good news (despite the article clearly being biased against it). Why the hell should we be involved there? From my limited knowledge, it seems like we're using Syria as a playground to indirectly play war with Russia. US funded Syrians vs Russian funded Syrians. Well screw that, I'll gladly forfeit that battle and let Russia play with themselves.

I posted this on FB, but I find it kind of remarkable; Every hurt feeling, feeling of disgust and disbelief I see from my liberal friends is exactly how I was feeling when Clinton rigged the election against Bernie. At that point, it didn't matter much to me which of them won, because either would have been a net loss.

I've already been through all the stages of grief, so now I'm so calm about this whole damn thing.

    This 100%!!!!

In between his "Republicans are scum" jokes, Bill Maher said basically this same thing the other night. I'm actually a fan of Bill Maher. I feel like I can tell when he's joking and when he's serious and I find myself laughing at the jokes and agreeing when he's serious.

This sir, needs to become viral, go on the news, and be on the front of the newspaper... Your logic regarding the election is such good common sense, that people will not accept it.... Very well stated sir...

Is there a little more information on this topic? What exactly is Russia doing/want or going to do, that led to Obama/Hilary have that "f you" kind of stance? Instead of working to make a relationship with them that could possibly benefit both of our countries?

Putin is a maniac who is a constant threat to attack other countries. He's been dismissive of other world leaders and is generally viewed as the edge of insanity. A lot of people fear he could try to plunge the world into WW3.

Obama/Clinton wanted to take a hardline stance because of how radical Putin has shown himself to be. Trump wants to talk to him. I'm not sure which method is better honestly.

The hypocrisy in this statement is hilarious. Episode 3 was the best of the prequels but the writing in this epic scene was still not great.
